Messing with an Ultralight Hammock System | First Setup

By popular viewer demand I finally pieced together a hammock system to try out. People asked me frequently both on the trail and in the comments my thoughts on hammock camping. Quiet frankly as a ground dweller I never really gave it much thought. The setups seemed unnecessarily difficult and overly complicated and I didn't think I would be able to match or beat the weight of my current ground setup.

But alas, this is an outdoors channel, so once I returned from the Appalachian Trail I did some research and pieced together the beginnings of a little ultralight hammock setup that I believe is pretty easy to set up. In this video we will give the system a little test run!

In this video, Tayson from Outdoor Vitals shares his top 5 things you don't need to bring backpacking, which all too many people do. He reminisces about his early days of backpacking and reflects on some of the unnecessary items they used to pack, which only added extra weight and bulk to his backpack. He presents a list of five things that backpackers can do without, offering insights and personal experiences. Tayson discusses the drawbacks of carrying extra pants, big fuel canisters, full-sized multi-tools, extra cooking gear, and tent poles. He also suggests alternative options and shares practical tips based on his own journeys.

DD Travel Hammock 2011 - Part1

Note: Games-Survival is an old link I am not associated with anymore. I have no clue who uses it for the last year or so.

DD Travel Hammock review - Part 1

info from site:
Size: 2.7m x 1.4m (8.858 ft x 4.59 ft) (comfortable for people up to 6ft 5 and 150kg)
Colour: Olive Green
Weight: 930g (2.05 lbs) (not including webbing)
Includes: 10m of Webbing (230g), 3 x 2m of Elastic Cord and a Small Stuff Sack

Note: My scale weight with stuff sack and skins: 2lbs, 12oz.

Latest Version of our popular Travel Hammock.

Comes with 2 zips (one either side of mosquito net) allowing quick entry / exit either side of the hammock and also allows you to tie the mosquito net up above you, out of the way, when not needed.

As before, this hammock has fine mosquito netting which keeps out all insects (including the dreaded British midge). Entry is via one of two side zips each with two double-sided zippers.

Features include two waterproof base layers so if needed (no trees) it can be set up on the ground as a basic bivi/tent, see pictures. The hammock also features two small internal pockets which are great for storing a torch, phone etc as well as three velcro patches between the two layers to help keep a thermarest/pad in place if cold weather camping. Now comes with an extra 2m elastic cord to create a ridge line inside the hammock to hold lightweight gear such as glasses etc.

You also have the option to lie out in the open (without mosi net) - simply tie the hammock up with the mosi net underneath the hammock.

With the waterproof floor this hammock can be used anywhere and along with our Tarp is the ultimate lightweight camping system! Please note that as the floor is waterproof it (the floor) is not very breathable - if you'd prefer a more breathable hammock please choose our Frontline (the same design but without waterproof base).

UPDATE NOTE: Nick at DD offered a replacement with return shipping. Can't ask for much more than that. Thanks Nick, will keep this one and enforce what unravels. Again, I don't blame DD as much as facility sewing them..

If you want a survival hammock, this is the design to beat!, once you add carabiners to the lines. waterproof fabric does not make it as hot' as some would like you to believe. i'm in the South USA and have no trouble using this hammock in the hot weather. In fact, i have been in 'breathable hammocks with less ventilation.

Introducing the Arc Convertible Hammock Shelter

Hi there! I'd like to finally unveil what I hope will become the latest and greatest in Hammock shelter systems. I call it simply the Arc.
The Arc is an all-weather, ultralight, convertible hammock shelter. Depending on the demands of the current environment, this shelter converts easily between two configurations, becoming either a hexagonal tarp, or a fully enclosed, ventilated, single wall tent system specifically designed for use with a hammock. Hope you guys enjoy! :D

This design is patent pending. I may be contacted for information by PM or by email at rytcd@yahoo.com. More info at

Hammock Overnight | Hiking Eastman Mountain | Hiking the White Mountains of New Hampshire

Hiked Eastman Mountain this past weekend. This hike in the White Mountains of New Hampshire was about 9-10 miles. I went up the back side of the Slippery Brook Trail up the probable less popular Non-Baldface parking lot side.

The hike begins by following an old logging or forest service road for about 2 miles before it splits back off into the woods for a fairly gradual ascent for the next 2.8ish miles. Once you hit the Eastman Mountain trail the last .4 miles of it are moderately more steep but was still easily doable. Fall was showing its colors. Also spent the night in the hammock again for the second time!
