Things To Do In Georgetown, Guyana. Spending The Day At The Guyana Zoo + Botanical Gardens
Today I decided to spend the day at the Guyana Zoo and Botanical Gardens in Georgetown, Guyana.
I walked from my stay accommodation to the zoo. It wasn’t a long walk, but I don’t recommend it because there weren’t any side walks.
Admissions to the Botanical Gardens is free.
Admissions to the zoo is:
$200 GYD for adults
$100 GYD for children under 12
$2,000 GYD for filming
The zoo is open daily from 9:30 am - 5:30 pm

The Botanical Gardens houses one of the most extensive collections of tropical flora in the Caribbean and
are laid out with ponds, canals, kissing bridges and a bandstand.
In 1877, Government voted $72,000 to establish the Gardens on an abandoned sugar estate, Plantation Vlissengen.
At the time, it was at the eastern end of the city limits. An early garden superintendent was botanist George Samuel Jenman.
and John Frederick Waby, the first gardener, arrived in Georgetown from the United Kingdom in December 1878. John Frederick Waby spent 35 years in Guyana landscaping
one of the finest tropical gardens in our region.
These gardens have a huge variety of tropical flowers and one of the finest collection of palms, as well as
lovely lilies. An example of the gardens vast collection are the lotus and the immense Victoria Regia Lily,
Guyana’s national flower.

Here you can also find docile manatees in the ponds. The first manatees were placed in the gardens in the 1870s
Visit to the Botanical Gardens of Guyana 1994
This 3-minute video shows a rather small part of Guyana's Botanical Gardens. There are other attractions such as the Zoo. Manatees (sea cows) can be found in some ponds, they are very friendly and will sometimes come to feed from you if you swish fresh grass about in the pond.
