Top 10 things you need to know about the Maldives

Welcome to the Maldives, the world's most PRISTINE and sublime beach vacation. There's a lot that goes into planning a trip to the region, so we're here to share the TOP TEN THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO TO THE MALDIVES! After ten hotels and endless plane rides around the country, we have learned SO much about what it's like to travel to the Maldives. In this video, we will tell you the most important things to keep in mind when you book a trip to the Maldives.

Whether you have booked a hotel already or are looking for advice on what hotels, what room types and what the heck the transfers are about, we have you covered.

As we mentioned in the video, check out these great links for booking comparisons and ideas:

While on some vacations your arrival or departure times don’t really matter because all you have to do is get to your hotel via taxi or car, arrival and departure times in the Maldives can make or break your trip. It is critical to pay attention to your flight schedule for a few reasons. Since the Maldives is a country made up of many islands, your transfers include sea planes, regular planes and boats. If your transfer to the hotel is via sea plane or boat, those hours are pretty limited to daylight. Planes are a little bit of an exception, but they also operate on somewhat limited hours. If your flight is set to arrival around 9pm or 10pm as many do, you will need to spend one night on Malé before transferring to your hotel. The best arrival times are early morning to ensure you are able to catch the first transfer out to your hotel.

If you're looking for something specific, feel free to skip ahead!
00:00 - Intro
00:37 - Where is the Maldives?
02:14 - What is the best time of year to visit the Maldives?
03:43 - Arrival/Departure Times into MLE
04:51 - How to find hotels in the Maldives?
06:51 - How to book hotels in the Maldives
08:11 - Transfers in the Maldives
11:52 - Beach Villa vs. Water Villa
13:52 - Additional costs to plan for
17:10 - Maldives is a Conservative Muslim Country
19:00 - Is the Maldives right for you?

Finding hotels can feel quite overwhelming – where do you even start? The great thing about the Maldives is that there is truly something for everyone. Big brands like Marriott, Hyatt and Hilton offers great experiences where loyalists can earn or spend hard earned points, but there are also dozens of 5-star brands that you may never have heard of. My favorite thing to do is to search on trivago.com . Trivago aggregates all the major booking platforms and displays every hotel available on the internet and the prices related to each of the hotels across different platforms.

There are a few ways to transfer to hotels in the Maldives: boat, plane or sea plane. Depending on the distance from Malé, your hotel may offer a boat transfer. Boat transfers are often less expensive than flights and have more flexibility around hours of operation.

One of the most difficult decisions you will have to make are whether to choose a beach villa or an overwater villa. I know, tough life. But really, this is important. People always ask us what our preferred room type is or assume we will always pick the overwater villa, but that’s not necessarily true. Not all overwater villas are created equal. Some hotels will offer overwater bungalows, but they will be smaller and darker than their beach villa counterparts or simply not over desirable water. Sometimes, the beach villa is significantly nicer, larger, with access to gorgeous sandy shores and blue water with a bathroom the size of the room itself. We have stayed at properties before where we have actually moved rooms due to the overwater villa being far less appealing. For example, one overwater hut we stayed in, you could actually not swim from the balcony due to the grassy bottom and six inches of water. We decided it was much more pleasant to stay in a gorgeous beach villa that accessed pristine teal water AND had a private pool.

Visiting Kartarpur Gurudwara In Pakistan | Everything You Need To Know | Curly Tales

I visited Kartarpur Gurudwara in Pakistan via the newly opened Kartarpur Corridor and it was nothing less than a delight! Here s everything you need to know:

Known as Gurudwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur, this is believed to be the last home of Sikhism founder Guru Nanak Dev and lies in the Punjab Province of Pakistan. The gurudwara is so close to the border and it is even visible from India but due to the partition, it’s been in Pakistan since the separation.

The rare aspect about this Gurudwara is that it allows Indians to cross the zero line without a visa.

EXTREME KONMARI METHOD DECLUTTERING | Before & After

I never thought cleaning my room would change my life, but here I am a new person all thanks to a few days of extreme bedroom decluttering inspired by Tidying Up with Marie Kondo and her KonMari Method. Lou and I spent a few days organizing, cleaning and decluttering my childhood bedroom from clothes and closets to books and boxes of sentimental items. I can truly attest to the life-changing magic of the KonMari Method. We purged my closet of over a decade worth of clutter and were able to minimize my possessions to just those that spark joy. A friend of mine joked that we are the only people who live in a van that are also secret hoarders, but after finishing this cleaning process I can proudly say that is no longer true! This process helped us to reach the minimal lifestyle that we aspire to embody and I truly feel a million pounds lighter knowing that I actually have a bedroom and not a storage unit waiting for me at my parents' house. We hope you enjoy this one! Let us know about your own cleaning projects below! Is anyone else newly obsessed with decluttering?

Here is a blog post I wrote about the whole process!

How Sikh Chefs Feed 100,000 People At The Gurudwara Bangla Sahib Temple In New Delhi, India

Open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the Gurudwara Bangla Sahib temple in New Delhi, India, feeds 30,000 to 40,000 people every day for free. And during religious holidays, that number can swell to well over 100,000. To keep up with demand, the kitchen uses machines to help cook a majority of its food.

We visited the temple during the birth anniversary of the 10th guru, Gobind Singh, to see how it prepares a celebratory feast in such big batches.

Guru Jagat: Take Back Our Sovereignty

“If you know how to hypnotize yourself, then no one can ever hypnotize you. That’s power. That’s sovereignty.” – Guru Jagat

Guru Jagat teaches the crowd at Wanderlust about the importance of sovereignty—or self-governance or authority—over our thoughts. There are literally millions of images broadcast to our minds with the primary purpose to change our thoughts about ourselves and our lives—and often not for the better. These images are hypnotic, and compel us into believing that something is wrong with us.

Fortunately there is a way to combat this. In this Speakeasy Guru Jagat talks about the importance of engaging in mind training, such as meditation, as a way to gain control over these thoughts and images. Mind training, she says, is a way to take back our sovereignty over our thoughts. And it's important, particularly when a lot of money is being spent through these images to try and take this power away.

Guru Jagat also explains how thoughts can cross our consciousness that don’t belong to us. They may belong to the collective consciousness, or even to our lineages and ancestors. But when these thoughts cross our brains, we can confuse them for our own. Without mind training we believe them and claim them as our own thoughts.

“Your reality is a trance of your own making—or someone else’s making—who doesn’t have your greatest good in mind.” – Guru Jagat

All thoughts have a positive and negative side, and it alters our brain chemistry depending on which one we choose. Our endocrine system actually secretes differently depending on which thought spin—positive or negative—is chosen. And our choices not only affect the quality of our own lives, but the good of all humanity.

So how do we choose the higher-level thoughts, with the positive spins?

We must gain sovereignty over our thoughts by participating in a daily practice of mind training.

“Choosing a thought or reality or a trance that is going to make you happy is a great gift to humanity.” – Guru Jagat
