WW2 German Underground Tunnels in Guernsey

This video shows the World War 2 German tunnels which can be found easily in Guernsey. They are as follows:

Talbot Valley,
Le Havelet - Val Des Terres,
St. Saviours,
German Underground Hospital,
Aquarium,
La Valette Museum.

Guernsey was the most fortified place in the whole of the Atlantik Wall. During World War 2 the Channel Islands were occupied for five years by Adolf Hitler's German Nazi forces.

In Guernsey there was 13,000 German troups at one point and thousands of Organisation Todt slave workers which mainly came from Poland. These slave workers were used to build hundreds of different German fortifications around Guernsey and had to live in terrible conditions and if they did not work they also did not get any food.

To build the tunnels they had to dig out thousands of tons of solid granite and many died in the process. It's rumoured that their bodies were just thrown into the setting concrete.

In 1944 twelve tunnels were under construction and two others were completed.

Guernsey was liberated on the 9th May 1945 and Liberation Day is celebrated every year on the 9th May. This video will be one of many uploaded during 2010 to celebrate 65 years of the Liberation Day.

La Valette Underground Military Museum - Guernsey

Guernsey's La Valette Underground Military Museum is housed in a World War 2 German tunnel complex. It houses many exhibits from World War 1, World War 2 and the Royal Guernsey Militia. It is situated next to the Aquarium and was built to be used as a fuel store for refuelling submarines. It has four main tunnels with a long corridor running along the back of them and an unfinished fifth tunnel.

There were four large fuel tanks in there each weighing 60 tonnes empty and held 30,000 gallons of fuel each adding an extra 120 tonnes to each of them. After World War 2, each of the fuel tanks were found to be full of fuel. The Germans produced this fuel oil using coal. The tomato growing industry were desperate for heating fuel for their greenhouses and the fuel was quickly used up by the growers.

The tunnel entrances were level with the road, but after three of the tanks were removed in 1946 they were blocked off and a large earth bank built in front of them. In 1987 work started on turning them into a museum. They had to dig down through the earth bank to reach the tunnel entrance The museum entrance was extended to protect visitors from possible rockfalls above and the museum was finally opened in August 1988.

Discovering Jersey - the island of dreams (and nightmares)

#jersey #channelislands
Jersey is in the Channel Islands, just off the coast of northern France but they belong to the UK. Or do they? In fact, this is just one of the many mysteries of this beautiful little island that we attempt to uncover during our five night Cosmos Stay and Explore trip. There's so much to unpack and so much to discover we just had to make a video to try and convey our surprise at how much we fell in love with this island, it's quirky and unique features and it's horrific and harrowing journey through enforced occupation by the Nazis in World War Two. If you've never been, this little video journal will hopefully inspire you to find out more.

Voluntary Disclosure:
We were invited to Jersey as guests of Cosmos. We paid for our own flights to Jersey and received no fees or remuneration for producing media during and after this trip from Cosmos. WW2 German Military Underground Hospital - Guernsey

Guernsey's World War 2 German Military Underground Hospital is the largest World War 2 tunnel complex in Guernsey. Construction of the Underground Hospital started in the winter of 1940, the first winter of the German Occupation of the Channel Islands. It has a floor area of 75,000 square feet and used some 15,000 tons of concrete and was never finished.

The metal framed beds are the original beds which were here from 1944 and were used and the wooden beds are exact copies of the wooden ones which were in use here. It has one unfinished section and an unfinished third entrance which has been marked in brown on the plan of the hospital at the beginning of the video. It was made to accomodate 500 patients under normal conditions and double that in an emergency.

The channels in the floors are to deal with the damp and these were never properly finished. The 75ft escape shaft has a reservoir built into one side of it which could hold thousands of gallons of water. The water was pumped into it from a nearby well and gave the Underground Hospital an independant source of water. The kitchen was near a ventilation shaft to allow the smell to escape the compound.

23 Organisation Todt slave workers died during it's construction, 17 of which died in one explosion and it is rumoured that their bodies were just thrown into the setting concrete. The hospital only ended up being used for six weeks and the wards were occupied by German troups which were wounded at the D-Day battles in Normandy, France in June 1944 and were taken by ship mainly from Cherbourg to Guernsey in the Channel Islands and to the hospital.

After the war 8 tons of drugs and other medical supplies were found in the storeroom. It was opened to the public as a museum on the 29th July 1954 and is still open to this day and well worth visiting.
