Guernsey Sark and Herm - Exploring the Channel Islands

We spend almost a week exploring the channel island of Guernsey, walking it's coastline, St Peter Port and the home of Victor Hugo. We also take a boat and spend 24 hours on the tiny island of Sark, followed too by a trip to the even smaller island of Herm.

This is an omnibus edition of our Guernsey travel series last year, with added footage too!

A Look At Guernsey In The Channel Islands - Sun, Sea And German Bunkers

Our first time in Guernsey in the Channel Islands. Touring the island in the sun and exploring its rich history, especially the remains of the recent German Occupation during WWII.

We stayed in Les Rocquettes Hotel, St. Peter Port for 2 nights.

On the first full day we visited Fort Grey in Rocquaine Bay on the west coast of Guernsey. It is a Martello tower, cup and saucer design” built in the early 1800s.

In the afternoon Andrew Walker from ‘Festung Guernsey’ takes us on a tour of some of Guernsey’s German fortifications including the remains of the large site of Batterie Mirus. This was the largest gun emplaced on the Channel Islands and could fire a 250kg shell 38km.

On the last day, we went into St Peter Port, the capital of Guernsey and visited the 800-year-old Castle Cornet which overlooks the harbour. The castle itself contains five museums and four-period gardens.

VisitGuernsey: Welcome To Guernsey

Nestling snugly in the bay of St Malo and 70 miles from mainland Britain, the Channel Island of Guernsey is a heady mix of French and British cultures. This collision of lifestyles has created a unique environment, where familiarity is tempered by the unexpected, but where you'll always feel welcome. It's a very special place, one that leaves a lasting impression on all who visit.

Here you'll discover a community that looks to the future for inspiration, but where traditional values still hold sway; where the influence of the Continent is keenly felt, but not to the extent that it dents an unwavering loyalty to the British Crown; and where the dynamism of the global finance industry sits easily alongside centuries old traditions.

Of course for many people, it's the scenery that makes Guernsey so special. And it's easy to see why. Our cliffs, coves and commons provide a real treat for walkers and the abundance and variety of our floral heritage will inspire you. Plus there are the sister islands of Herm, Sark and Alderney to explore.

ST PETER PORT GUERNSEY SMALL TRAIN TOUR

This is a tour I took around the capital of Guernsey, I found the story interesting and wanted to share. When you in St Peter Port you should take this trip. The small train leaves from port next to café no. 17 and the price for an adult was £6

Guernsey Trip Highlights December 2021

#guernsey #shorts
Just a few pieces of video from our recent trip to the Island of Guernsey to visit Paul's Mum.
For those of you who don't know, Guernsey is a small island in the English channel. It is part of a group of Islands known as the Channel Islands that sit quite close to the coast of France. This is where Paul was born and grew up. Guernsey was occupied by Germany during the Second World War and has a very visible history in the form of many fortified buildings built by the occupiers and dotted around the coastline.

Paul's mum was a child during the war and was evacuated to Yorkshire in Northern England. She has a few memories of that time that she shared with us in a series of videos - here are the links.

Our very popular Guernsey Trip Video from April 2018

The island has a great climate but is very open to the elements and the winter weather can be quite wild at times, especially on the exposed cliff tops. We had a range of weather including some very windy days and wintry showers - I struggled to take some of the shots as I was unable to keep steady in the wind!
We hope you enjoy this short film!

Guernsey - Cycling the West Coast from Vazon - June 2018

Guernsey is a small island forming part of the British Channel Islands just off the coast of France. The beaches are magnificent and cycling past them or along their trails is breathtaking. Join me, for a ride along part of the coast and soak in the atmosphere.
