Saipan of the Northern Mariana Islands: Part of the USA Most Americans Aren't Aware of

Went to Saipan for 4 days this past Memorial Weekend. It's the island that saw a lot of action during WWII between the Japanese and Americans. It was interesting to see the remaining weaponry, tanks, and buildings strewn all over the island of that time, particularly, unprotected.

This was such an amazing trip we were fortunate enough to take! Saipan is the second largest island In the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands - CNMI.

Saipan has pristine beaches, championship golf courses, world class diving and snorkeling. Visitors can experience a variety of cultural and historical sites as well as recreational events

Saipan’s torquiose blue water hides wrecks and remnants of the Pacific War and is a snorker and scuba diver’s paradise. Towering cliffs and pristine jungle lures hikers with caves still filled with the detritus of a war now remembered by years round ceremonies held at inspiring peace memorials of many nations.

A trip to “The last Command Post” of the Japanese Imperial Army or the “Suicide Cliff” where thousands tragically kept to their deaths or the old Japanese Jail where aviatrix Amelia Earhart was thought to be held captive are worthwhile and exciting attractions.

Tiny Managaha Island inside Saipan’s blue lagoon is a must see, and boasts crystal waters ideal for first rate snorkeling and water sports. The cavernous Grotto is rated as the #2 dive spot in all of the Pacific and numerous shore dives await the eager diver.

Thank you to the Kensington Hotel Saipan for such wonderful accommodations during our stay

Mariana Islands Adventures. GUAM USA

Marianas Adventures! 1st Stop... GUAM USA with Crank and ByTheBay

MAP OF THE MARIANA ISLANDS

salutations my friends. this is a map of the Mariana islands. The Mariana Islands, also simply the Marianas, are a crescent-shaped archipelago comprising the summits of fourteen longitudinally oriented, mostly dormant volcanic mountains in the northwestern Pacific Ocean, between the 12th and 21st parallels north and along the 145th meridian east. They lie south-southeast of Japan, west-southwest of Hawaii, north of New Guinea and east of the Philippines, demarcating the Philippine Sea's eastern limit. They are found in the northern part of the western Oceanic sub-region of Micronesia, and are politically divided into two jurisdictions of the United States: the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and, at the southern end of the chain, the territory of Guam. The islands were named after the influential Spanish queen Mariana of Austria following their colonization in the 17th century.
The Mariana Islands are the southern part of a submerged mountain range that extends 1,565 miles from Guam to near Japan. Geographically, the Marianas are part of a larger region called Micronesia.

The Mariana Islands have a total land area of 1,008 km2. They are composed of two administrative units:

Guam, a US territory.
and the Northern Mariana Islands (including the islands of Saipan, Tinian and Rota), which make up a Commonwealth of the United States.
also, The island chain geographically consists of two subgroups, a northern group of ten volcanic main islands, all are currently uninhabited; and a southern group of five coralline limestone islands (Rota, Guam, Aguijan, Tinian and Saipan), all inhabited except Aguijan. In the northern volcanic group a maximum elevation of about 2,700 feet is reached; there are craters showing signs of activity, and earthquakes are not uncommon. Coral reefs fringe the coasts of the southern isles, which are of slight elevation.

The lowest point on the Earth's crust, the Mariana Trench, is near the islands and is named after them. thats all for now. thanks for listening. please comment and subscribe for the best maps. goodbye.

Guam, USA, Mariana Islands, Micronesia I Largest island in Micronesia!

Guam, island and unincorporated territory of the United States in the North Pacific Ocean, the largest, most populous, and southernmost of the Mariana Islands.

Watch my other videos from Micronesia:

Guam, like the other Mariana Islands, was settled by the second quarter of the 2nd millennium BC by an Indonesian-Filipino people. Archaeological research shows that by AD 800 they had developed a complex society that erected elaborate stone pillars, which served as supports for communal houses.

Ferdinand Magellan probably landed on Guam in 1521. Spain officially claimed the island in 1565 but did not attempt to conquer it until the latter part of the 17th century. After an uprising in 1670 and 25 years of intermittent warfare, the Spanish subdued the population with considerable bloodshed. Diseases introduced by the Europeans, particularly smallpox and influenza, also played an important role in the decimation of the population. Typhoons in 1671 and 1693 caused further destruction and loss of life. Guam remained a Spanish possession until 1898, when, in the course of the Spanish-American War, was ceded to the United States, and Spain sold the other islands of the Marianas to Germany in 1899.

During World War II the Japanese landed on Guam just after the Pearl Harbor attack and occupied the island by December 12, 1941. Allied forces retook Guam by August 10, 1944. It was a major air and naval base for the squadrons of bombers that attacked Japan near the end of the war. Under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Navy, it was made a territory in1950, that was administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior. Various offices within that department have administered Guam; the Office of Insular Affairs has had responsibility since 1995. Guam remains the site of major U.S. naval and air bases; about one-third of the land in Guam is owned by the U.S. armed forces.

Guam has a pleasant tropical climate tempered by the northeast trade winds and the north equatorial ocean current that flows west across the Pacific. Temperatures range between approximately 20 and 30°C and are fairly even throughout the year. Average annual precipitation is about 2,400 mm, three-fourths of which falls in storms during the wet season, generally starting in May or June and lasting through November. The evenness of the climate is punctuated by destructive typhoons that occur at irregular intervals.

Palm trees, ferns, and other tropical plants abound. Many types of marine life and insects are also found. However, as a result of the accidental introduction in the 1940s of the brown tree snake, an invasive species from New Guinea, indigenous bird life on Guam has been devastated. At least a dozen bird species have become extinct, and several more are endangered. The abundant snakes have also caused numerous power outages by climbing poles and wires and crawling into transmission equipment, and they have killed small mammals.

The U.S. armed forces are represented at multiple military facilities on Guam. Andersen Air Force Base and its annexes are concentrated at the northern end of the island. U.S. Navy facilities, located around the island, include a naval air station, a naval base with a ship repair yard, communications centres, and a hospital. Work at the military facilities has drawn many islanders away from their former lives of subsistence agriculture and fishing.

Tourism is the most prominent component of the economy, with more than a million visitors arriving per year. There are several luxury hotels along Tumon Bay, which has been highly developed as a tourist area. An international airport links Guam with other Pacific islands, Asia, and Hawaii and the continental United States.
