12 Facts about Greenland That You Might Not Know

Greenland is without a doubt the destination in the Arctic that sees the fewest tourists in the summer and is also the one that the least amount of people are familiar with. It is also one of the most fascinating locations in the world. Greenland is enormously enormous and incredibly white, two features that undoubtedly both contribute to the attractiveness and make it more than a bit frightening to plan a visit. If you have ever taken even a cursory look at a global map, you are bound to be aware of these facts. Greenland is an Arctic conservation area comparable to only a few others, both on land and within the oceans that shape it, and it is populated by a historic Inuit culture that has developed to the rhythm of its own drum. However, size and ice aren't the only things that Greenland has going for it; there is so much more to it than that.
Before you start making travel plans to Greenland, you should familiarize yourself with the following really fun facts about Greenland. Take a look:
1. Greenland Really Was Green
Why is Greenland still named Greenland if it is always frozen over? Greenland is a white Arctic country because of all the snow and ice that blankets it. If it's not green, then why is it called Greenland? Well, this surely is one of the most interesting facts about Greenland that you might not know. But don’t worry, the story isn’t that complex. The murderer Erik the Red of Iceland, who was sent there, is responsible for the island's unusual moniker. He chose the name Greenland in the belief that it would encourage immigration. South Greenland (where Erik the Red made his home) is surprisingly lush during the summer months. According to researchers, however, Greenland was a lush greenery over 2.5 million years ago. New research shows that ancient earth was chilled kept for millions of years, buried beneath roughly two miles of ice.

2. World’s Largest Island
Greenland is a huge island, around the area of Western Europe. Remember that it is the world's 12th biggest nation while making plans for your trip. When additional islands in the vicinity are included in, the total land surface of Greenland rises to 2.16 million square kilometers (836,330 sq miles). An arctic ice extends over about 80 percent of whole land area. While the ice-free region is small compared to the rest of the planet, it is nevertheless around the area of Sweden. Among the world's least populous nations, its 56,480 residents make it a rarity in terms of population density.

3. Greenland is an Autonomous country
Another fun fact about Greenland is that in spite of being a part of Denmark, Greenland operates independently as a sovereign nation. Greenland has really been historically and culturally linked to Europe for the better part of a thousand years, despite its North American location. Denmark has had settlements in Greenland as of 1721; in 1953, the nation officially became a part of Denmark. After being awarded Home Rule by Denmark in 1979, Greenland was then inaugurated into extended Self Rule in 2009, providing even more authority and responsibility to the Greenlandic government. Greenland will be able to take up additional duties from Denmark in accordance with the new framework as and when it is ready to do so.

4. Greenland has the lowest population density of almost any country on the planet.
Despite its size, the city is home to barely 56,000 people. That translates to a population density of only 0.03 individuals per square kilometer. There is plenty of space to be alone even in the nation's capital, as the population is not fairly spread out and no one lives in the great majority of the island.

Hunting:
The people of Greenland hunt seals, whales, and dolphins. Other than fish, these marine mammals are an important food source. Every part of the animal is used. Still, among some, this type of hunting will spark outrage. However, understand that very little grows in Greenland, as the summer lasts only around 2 months. Most fruits and vegetables, as well as all other types of food, need to be imported, causing high transport costs and emissions and resulting in astronomical prices. No citizen of Europe or North America has any right to judge the lifestyle of these people who rely on locally available, sustainable food sources.

Do we prefer whales swimming wild and free in the ocean? 100%. However, in our daily lives, most of us have the luxury of buying everything we could think of in a nearby supermarket. Greenlanders do not have that option.

Greenlanders know where their food comes from. Most of us in the West do not. It is easy to judge people and their lifestyles even if we know little about them. And if after all of that, you still believe Greenlanders should stop hunting seals, you are placing ideology above reason.

Greenland and Iceland Compared

What are the differences between Iceland and Greenland? The difference between Greenland and Iceland transcends just the prefixes of their names. In order words, while both are lands, one is green and the other is ice. Nevertheless, there are several similarities between the two countries. Why not join us in the discussion of this Greenland and Iceland compared.
Despite the fact that they have certain common qualities, Greenland and Iceland are two very separate countries. Climates, cultures, languages, histories, and communities differ between the two countries. You need to pay attention to this piece about the fundamental differences between Iceland and Greenland to ensure that you know which country you actually want to visit.
Population
Greenland has a far fewer population. The population of Greenland is 56,421 with the majority of the population holding Danish citizenship since the country is recognized as an autonomous region of the Kingdom of Denmark. Meanwhile, the population of Iceland is 368,792.
Both countries have sparsely inhabited landscapes. In both Iceland and Greenland, the majority of the population is concentrated in big urban areas. By the way, Greenland is a massive Island.
In Iceland, the capital city of Reykjavik is home to an incredible 50% of the population while in Greenland, the largest city of Nuuk is home to only 30% of the population.
Size
Even though Iceland is more populous than Greenland, it is 21 times smaller than Iceland. While the total size of Iceland is 39,817 square miles, Greenland has a huge area of 836,330 square miles. Don’t bother to calculate the mammoth difference in population densities.
Tourism
Iceland is far less difficult to visit. It’s no surprise. Iceland receives more than 2 million visitors every year, but Greenland receives an average of only 60,000. Iceland has a greater number of hotels, restaurants, and infrastructure for tourists to enjoy as a result of its greater experience with international visitors.
For example, taking a self-drive tour around the entire country on the Icelandic Ring Road is a simple and convenient option. In Greenland, on the other hand, there are just about 93 miles of paved roads, making travel by automobile far more difficult.
In spite of all that, Greenland has a great deal to offer its tourists. Greenland is progressively gaining in popularity as a tourist destination, thanks to its rich and intriguing history as well as its breathtaking polar nature and wildlife.
Climate
Don’t be snowed by the name; Iceland actually has less ice than Greenland which is significantly cooler. On the other hand, Greenland is not as green as Iceland. An ice sheet that has been in place for thousands of years covers 11% of Iceland's geographical area. As incredible as this is, it pales into insignificance when compared to Greenland's incredible 80% ice sheet coverage, which is unfathomable.

WELCOME TO ONE OF THE WORLD'S MOST ISOLATED PLACES - GREENLAND!

Today I arrived in one of the world's most remote villages, way out here on the rugged North Eastern shores of Greenland. It's called Ittoqqortoormiit (say that 5 times fast) and it's a fascinating place that feels like I'm on the moon!

Very few outsiders have ever visited this village because it's so remote, and I'm lucky to be one of them on board this Hurtigruten expedition!

Ittoqqortoormiit has a population of around 350 and the nearest town is thousands of kilometers away. The locals are called Inuits (the same ethnic group as Eskimos), and they survive from hunting and eating polar bears, walrus, seals, and whales.

Could you ever live here? Let me know in the comments below!

Facts & History of Greenland | Greenland The Largest Island of World

Greenland is an island country in North America that is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. It is located between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans, east of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago.
Greenland is the largest island in the world. About 85 percent of the island's land surface is covered by ice but as the world knows that ice is melting and fast. The cracks in the ice are well documented as are the resultant rising sea levels. Equally well documented are the threats to the Inuit way of life.
There are many beautiful places in Greenland. Greenland has some of the best places in Greenland.
Facts & History of Greenland | The Largest Island of World
Globally snow is on retreat, especially since 1980. Most mountain glaciers are getting smaller. Snow cover is retreating earlier in the spring. Sea ice in the Arctic is shrinking in all seasons, most dramatically in summer. Reductions are reported in permafrost, seasonally frozen ground, and river and lake ice. Important coastal regions of the ice sheets on Greenland and West Antarctica, and the glaciers of the Antarctic Peninsula, are thinning and contributing to sea level rise.

Greenland | The Largest Island Of World | The Land Of Ice

Greenland (Greenlandic: Kalaallit Nunaat, pronounced [kalaːɬit nʉnaːt]; Danish: Grønland, pronounced [ˈkʁɶnˌlænˀ]) is an island country that is part of the Kingdom of Denmark. It is located between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans, east of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Greenland is the world's largest island,[d] it is one of three constituent countries that form the Kingdom of Denmark, along with Denmark and the Faroe Islands; the citizens of these countries are all Danish nationals.[15] Greenland is divided into five municipalities: Sermersooq, Kujalleq, Qeqqata, Qeqertalik and Avannaata. The northeast of the island composes the unincorporated Northeast Greenland National Park. Thule Air Base is also unincorporated, an enclave within Avannaata municipality administered by the United States Space Force.[16] Greenland's capital is Nuuk.

Though a part of the continent of North America, Greenland has been politically and culturally associated with Europe (specifically Norway and Denmark, the colonial powers) for more than a millennium, beginning in 986. The majority of its residents are Inuit, whose ancestors migrated from Alaska through Northern Canada, gradually settling across the island by the 13th century.

Today, the population is concentrated mainly on the southwest coast, while the rest of the island is sparsely populated. Three-quarters of Greenland is covered by the only permanent ice sheet outside of Antarctica. With a population of 56,081 (2020),[19] it is the least densely populated region in the world. About a third of the population lives in Nuuk, the capital and largest city; the second-largest city in terms of population is Sisimiut, 320 km (200 mi) north of Nuuk. The Arctic Umiaq Line ferry acts as a lifeline for western Greenland, connecting the various cities and settlements.

Greenland has been inhabited at intervals over at least the last 4,500 years by Arctic peoples whose forebears migrated there from what is now Canada. Norsemen settled the uninhabited southern part of Greenland beginning in the 10th century, having previously settled Iceland. These Norsemen later set sail from Greenland and Iceland, with Leif Erikson becoming the first known European to reach North America nearly 500 years before Columbus reached the Caribbean islands. Inuit arrived in the 13th century. Though under continuous influence of Norway and Norwegians, Greenland was not formally under the Norwegian crown until 1261. The Norse colonies disappeared in the late 15th century after Norway was hit by the Black Death and entered a severe decline. Soon after their demise, beginning in 1499, the Portuguese briefly explored and claimed the island, naming it Terra do Lavrador (later applied to Labrador in Canada).

In the early 17th century, Danish explorers reached Greenland again. To strengthen trading and power, Denmark–Norway affirmed sovereignty over the island. Because of Norway's weak status, it lost sovereignty over Greenland in 1814 when the union was dissolved. Greenland became Danish in 1814 and was fully integrated in the Danish state in 1953 under the Constitution of Denmark. With the Constitution of 1953, the people in Greenland became citizens of Denmark. From 1961 Greenland joined the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), which Denmark joined as a founding member of the EFTA in 1960, but its membership ceased with effect from 1973 when Denmark joined the European Communities. In 1973, Greenland joined the European Economic Community (EEC) with Denmark. However, in a referendum in 1982, a majority of the population voted for Greenland to withdraw from the EEC. This was effected in 1985, changing Greenland to an OCT (Overseas Countries and Territories) associated with the EEC, now the European Union (EU). The associated relationship with the EU also means that all Greenlandic nationals (OCT-nationals) are EU citizens.

Greenland contains the world's largest and northernmost national park, Northeast Greenland National Park (Kalaallit Nunaanni nuna eqqissisimatitaq). Established in 1974 and expanded to its present size in 1988, it protects 972,001 km2 (375,292 sq mi) of the interior and northeastern coast of Greenland and is bigger than all but twenty-nine countries in the world.

In 1979, Denmark granted home rule to Greenland; in 2008, Greenlanders voted in favour of the Self-Government Act, which transferred more power from the Danish government to the local Greenlandic government. Under the new structure, Greenland has gradually assumed responsibility for policing, the judicial system, company law, accounting, auditing, mineral resource activities, aviation, law of legal capacity, family law and succession law, immigration and border controls, the working environment, financial regulation and supervision.

Greenland ???????? - The Land Of Unending Ice | World’s Largest Island ???? #greenlandtour #toorhuntr

Greenland ???????? is the world's largest island, located between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans, east of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark.

GREENLAND 4K NATURE RELAXATION | WORLDS LARGEST ISLAND | DIFFERENT WORLD | NATURE IN 4K #4knature

Located in the North Atlantic Ocean, Greenland is the world's largest island. The island—a territory of Denmark—is more than three times the size of the state of Texas. Its nearest neighbor is Canada's Ellesmere Island, which is located 16 miles (26 kilometers) to the north of Greenland.

1. World’s Largest Island

Let’s start with the basics. Greenland is actually the world’s biggest island – by area – that is not a continent. The total area of Greenland is 2.16 million square kilometres (836,330 square miles), including other offshore islands. Almost 80 percent of the land mass is covered by an ice cap. The ice-free area may be a minority, but it’s still around the size of Sweden. With a population of 56,480 (2017 estimate), it is one of the least densely populated countries in the world.

2. Greenland Really Was Green

Since most of Greenland is covered in ice, snow and glaciers, the Arctic nation is mostly white. So how did it get its name “Greenland” when it’s not really green? It actually got its name from Erik The Red, an Icelandic murderer who was exiled to the island. He called it “Greenland” in hopes that the name would attract settlers. But according to scientists, Greenland was actually quite green more than 2.5 million years ago. A new study reveals that ancient dirt was cryogenically frozen for millions of years underneath about 2 miles of ice.

3. Greenland is an Autonomous country

Greenland is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of Denmark. Although Greenland is geographically a part of the North American continent, it has been politically and culturally associated with Europe for about a millennium. Since 1721, Denmark has held colonies in Greenland, but the country was made part of Denmark in 1953. In 1979 Denmark granted Home Rule to Greenland, and in 2009 expanded Self Rule was inaugurated, transferring yet more decision making power and more responsibilities to the Greenlandic government. Under the new structure, gradually Greenland can assume more and more responsibilities from Denmark, when it is ready for it.

4. 4,500 Years of History

According to historians, the first humans were thought to have arrived in Greenland around 2500 BC. The group of migrants apparently died out and were succeeded by several other groups who migrated from North America. At the beginning of the 10th century, Norsemen from Iceland settled the uninhabited southern part of Greenland, but they disappeared in the late 15th century. The Inuit migrated here from Asia in the 13th century and their bloodline survived to this day. Most Inuit Greenlanders are their direct descendants, and continue to practise some of the centuries-old traditions.

“Humans have inhabited Greenland for more than 4,500 years.”

5. Inuit Culture

Today, 88% of Greenland’s population are Inuit (predominantly Kalaallit) or mixed Danish and Inuit. The remaining 12% are of European descent, mainly Danish. Truth be told, Greenlanders actually don’t appreciate being called ‘eskimos’; the proper name for them is Inuit or Kalaallit, which actually means ‘Greenlander’ in the native Inuit language, Kalaallisut. The Inuit Greenlanders identify strongly with Inuits in other parts of the world, like Canada and Alaska, and they actually share some similarities in their languages as well.

6. A Multilingual Nation

The majority of the population in Greenland speaks both Greenlandic (mainly Kalaallisut) and Danish. The two languages have been used in public affairs since the establishment of home rule in 1979. Today, the young generation learn both languages, as well as English, in school. The Greenlandic language is an interesting language with a long history, and it’s closely related to the Inuit languages in Canada, such as Inuktitut. “Kayak” and “igloo” are Greenlandic words that have been adopted directly by other languages.

7. No Roads In Greenland
Despite having a land size of 2.16 million square kilometres, there are no roads or railway system that connect settlements to one another. There are roads within the towns, but they end at the outskirts. All travel between towns is done by plane, boat, helicopter, snowmobile or dogsled. Boats are by far the most popular mode of transportation and you’ll often see locals out cruising the fjords every summer.

Greenland, recognized as the largest non-continental island globally, surpassing the size of the U.S. state of Texas by threefold, challenges common perceptions as it is not entirely icy; approximately 20% of Greenland boasts relatively green landscapes. Despite this potential for habitable land, only a small population of around 56,000 people resides on this vast island, earning it the distinction of being the world's least densely populated region. The apparent paradox of its name, coupled with the low population density, prompts an exploration into the geographic factors that contribute to Greenland's unique characteristics. In our journey with Vacation Awaits, we aim to uncover the reasons behind the sparse population and the intriguing nomenclature of the world's largest island, revealing unexpected features that extend beyond a surface-level explanation.

The Biggest Island Greenland | Best Iceland To Visit

Greenland is the world's largest island, located northeast of Canada in the North Atlantic Ocean. It has a polar climate and a landscape dominated by glaciers and icebergs, and is home to a diverse range of wildlife and a rich indigenous culture. Greenland is known for its stunning natural beauty, seafood production, and significant mineral resources. However, climate change is a significant concern for the island as its ice sheet is melting at an accelerating rate, leading to rising sea levels.

In the summer months, temperatures can rise above freezing in some areas, which allows for some melting of the ice and snow. However, this is still a relatively brief and cool season. In the winter, temperatures can drop to -50°C (-58°F) or even lower in some areas, making it one of the coldest places on earth.

Overall, the weather in Greenland is characterized by long, dark winters and relatively short summers. Visitors should be prepared for cold temperatures and snow, even in the summer months.
