Chios - The Most Underrated Greek Island | Byzantine Nea Moni Monastery | Ferry from Turkey | Part 1
Welcome to one of the most underrated Greek islands of Chios. Chios, Greece is a beautiful, mountainous island in the Aegean Sea that can be reached by ferry via Çeşme, Turkey. We’ll visit the Nea Moni Monastery which showcases some of the best preserved Byzantine art, view seaside windmills, walk through the walls of the former castle to see Ottoman style architecture and visit an old Turkish bath. In addition, I’ll try some delicious Greek loukoumades and sip an ice cold freddo cappuccino. Castle of Chios, Greek island of Chios - the fort of Chios (the castle of Chios, the citadel of Chios, the fortress of Chios) in Greece. Let's visit the historic Castle of Chios which is a medieval citadel in Chios town on the Greek island of Chios (ΧΙΟΣ). The Castle of Chios (the fort of Chios, the citadel of Chios, the fortress of Chios) is situated adjacent to the main port of Chios and its east side borders with the sea. The Castle of Chios consists of an inhabited area surrounded by a large stone wall structure with various fortifications purposed to defend the enclosed population and properties against naval attack and siege.
The Castle of Chios was constructed in the medieval period with its first construction phase having started in the 10th century by the Byzantines. The structures surviving to this day are part of later construction and expansion dated to the time when the Genoese, who maintained commercial concerns, ruled the island during the 14th to the 16th century.

Chios, Greece - 5 nights travel highlights 2022
I decided to go off the beaten path and visit the North Aegean Greek Island Chios! I stayed 5 nights at Maria Rooms in Agia Ermioni which was a lovely quiet area and perfect base to explore the southern part of the island. I had an amazing time checking out the small villages and beaches and would highly recommend the island as a gateway if you want to relax and/or be more adventurous and explore what the island has the offer.

Chios is the capital of the province and has about 25,000 inhabitants. The city is a bustling port and commercial center. In the center of town stands the Byzantine museum with a variety of historical artifacts from the island's past. Modern Chios has been built on the site of the ancient city from which there exist a few survived findings – in particular the walls and the theater. The Castle is quite impressive. Originally built by the Byzantines as a fortress, it was significantly extended by the Genovese in the 14th century.

Greek island of Chios - village of Mesta on Chios island in Greece. Let's travel to Greece and let's visit the Greek island of Chios (Hios). We will visit Mesta village which is a Greek traditional village in the island of Chios. Mesta village belongs to Mastic Villages a group of villages in South Chios where the main activity is the agriculture of mastic. Mesta village is characterised by particular architecture since it is a village-castle with perfectly preserved medieval architecture. The village of Mesta was probably built in the 12th century during Byzantine era. The architecture of Mesta village with the narrow streets and the perimetric fortification served to repel the pirate raids. Mesta village is located 35 km south west of Chios (town), 4 km away from coast.

Greek island CHIOS: AVGONIMA, medieval village built like fortress #travel #greekislands
Village of Avgonima (Αυγώνυμα), Greek island of Chios. Let's travel to Greece and let's visit the Greek island of Chios (or island of Hios). We are going to tour Avgonima village (Αυγώνυμα) which is a tiny scenic village that sits on top of a hill near the west coast of Chios, Greece and it’s filled with attractive stone homes.
Avgonima is a village in central Chios, at 16 Km from Hora (capital), on the west side of the island, and at about 6 Km from Anavatos. The name of the village derives from the local name “Avgonimata” (an area between Avgonima and Anavatos), which - in Greek - means “low - value fields”.
Avgonima village is very old, probably pre-mediaeval. One can get here by going through the most prominent pine forest of the island at a 450 metres altitude. Avgonima is characterised as a medieval fortified type village, due to the houses being built very close to one another, giving the feeling of a castle. Τhe village was almost abandoned during the 60s and thus it was saved by potential urban type reconstruction.
The settlement is restored at a great part of it with respect to the traditional architecture. Most of it's picturesque houses are offered for accomodation. Small alleys lead to the main square, where the church is the dominating point of the village, with it's tavernas. The magnificent view alongside delicious food will get even the most demanding visitor.
