General Relativity: Visualizing Gravity

Newton's ideas of gravity were accepted for more than 200 years. Then Einstein challenged this view and came up with his general theory of relativity.

Places on Earth Where Gravity DOESN'T WORK RIGHT!

Newton's law of Universal Gravitation states that every particle attracts every other particle with a force directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between their centers.
Although this law applies to every particle, there are some places on this planet that seem to completely ignore it.
Here are 5 Places on Earth Where Gravity, DOESN'T WORK RIGHT!

1. Mount Aragats, Armenia
Thousands of tourists travel here to experience the odd phenomena that happens at The Gravity Hill. If you stop your car and put it in neutral and then release the brake your car begins to travel uphill. Pedestrians find it surprisingly easy to climb the hill and there are also various rivers in the area that flow upwards!

2. The Mystery Spot, Santa Cruz, California
Electrician George Prather discovered this location in 1939, while he was out walking, he suddenly felt dizzy and noticed that things didn't quite feel right in this area. Intrigued, he bought 3 acres of the land and proceeded to build a house on it. To help demonstrate the oddities of the area, George built the house at a 20-degree angle thus exaggerating the antigravity effect of the area.

3. The Oregon Vortex, Oregon
According to local legend, this site was referred to by Native Americans as the forbidden ground. An assay office built by Old Grey Mining company in 1904 slid off its foundations and ended up at an odd angle, accentuating the gravitational oddities of the area. People seem to grow or shrink, balls roll uphill, things seem to hang at odd angles, and visitor's bodies lean towards Magnetic North.

4. The Golden Boulder, Myanmar
This gigantic boulder had a pagoda built on it and was painted gold by the locals and has been defying gravity for 2500 years! Perched impossibly on a rock, 50 foot up, Legend has it that it is held there by Buddha's hair and can only be moved by a woman, hence no women are allowed to touch it.

5. Magnetic Hill, Black Rock, Australia
On the Black Rock Road is a place called Magnetic hill, a place where the power of magnetism seems to overpower that of gravity. When you get there you'll find a signpost telling you to turn your Ignition off, select neutral, and let go of the brakes. if your vehicle is steel you'll roll uphill, if it's aluminium or plastic you'll roll down.

6. Backwards Waterfall
When it comes to antigravitational phenomena, perhaps none are quite as spectacular as this waterfall where the water doesn't fall! some locals believe that this happens because gravity has less effect on the area around the falls, but scientists claim that it is due to strong air currents blowing the water up.

Zero Gravity

The Northrop Grumman Foundation Weightless Flights of Discovery program is designed to inspire students to pursue science and technical careers by inspiring their teachers first. Practicing classroom middle school teachers and future middle school teachers have the opportunity to participate in hands-on science workshops and perform and experiment in a parabolic or zero-gravity aircraft flight that creates temporary weightlessness comparable to what humans would experience during space travel to the Moon or Mars. It also mimics how astronauts train for space flights. The flight took off and landed from LaGuardia Airport on 9/10/07. Video by John O'Boyle

Gravity Hill

Cars roll down hills, right? Not on one Pennsylvania road, claim locals, where cars mysteriously roll back up the hill when left in neutral. Join Charlie at Gravity Hill to test the rumors.

Zero Gravity Flight - Weightlessness

Adventurer George Kourounis experiences a zero gravity flight aboard G-Force One, a jet that simulates the weightlessness of space by flying in a series of parabolic arcs. The people inside are free-falling inside the fuselage and therefore experience what its like to be in space... For about 20 seconds at a time.

The extreme maneuvers often wreak havoc to the stomachs of those that are sensitive to motion sickness. George loses his lunch while floating inside the plane. It happens.

Gravitational Waves Demo @ Royal Observatory Edinburgh

This video illustrates a proof-of-concept gravitational waves demonstration developed by PhD students Benjamin Giblin and Ben Morton at the Royal Observatory Edinburgh.

The sheet of spandex in the video represents the fabric of spacetime, and the wheels represent black holes. These black holes are being spun at the speed of light, or rather, the speed that waves propagate in the fabric (~18 revolutions/s). Just as extremely massive rapidly rotating bodies generate ripples in spacetime in Einstein's General Theory of Relativity (1915), our gravitational wave generator induces ripples in the fabric of this simulated universe.

The two Bens presented this gravitational wave demo at a two-day science exhibition at Dynamic Earth Edinburgh in Autumn 2016. To showcase gravitational waves at your upcoming science event, please contact bengib [at] roe.ac.uk

HOW IT IS DONE:
We are employing the spectroscopic effect via a camera with a frame rate tuned to the speed of our black holes, to image the waves in such a way that we can see them slowly propagate through spacetime. The waves appear to move backwards/forwards depending on if the black holes spin at just below/above the frame
