Grand Canyon South Rim to Rim Virtual Trail Guide (South Kaibab to Bright Angel)

I hiked the Grand Canyon South Rim to Rim, also known as the rim to river to rim, starting on the South Kaibab Trail and ending on the Bright Angel Trail. This was a fun yet strenuous day hike. I added on Plateau Point for a total of 20.5 miles + an additional 2.5 miles along the rim back to my car. with 5,000ft of elevation gain. This hike took place on a slightly smoky, breezy October day.

Full Hike: Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim in Arizona

Hike Description:
The 21-mile journey starting from the South Kaibab Trailhead on the South Rim to the Colorado River at the bottom and then back up to the North Kaibab Trailhead on the other side (North Rim) is an epic adventure—an indulgence in nature, self-discovery, and history. The environment is immense; the views, stunning. But hikers will also face massive temperature swings, major elevation loss/gain, the lack of water on the South Kaibab Trail, harsh desert conditions, limited ideal hiking hours, and The Box, which is an area between Phantom Ranch and about midway to Ribbon Falls, where sheer, soaring walls on both sides of the trail trap the heat and significantly raise the temperature. This is indeed the GRAND Canyon: bold, amplified, profound. This video, these words, and the photos are in no way comparable to actually being there, trying to take everything in yet knowing there is still much more to be impressed by. This hike is not easy, but plan very, very well to enjoy it all.

Self Commentary:
I wanted to get past The Box by a certain time, which I did at around 9 AM—this was an important goal of the hike. Unknowable from the video is the temperature change: initially ~30 °F at the top of the South Rim when I started and later ~93 °F at the canyon bottom, a difference of around 63 degrees. If I did this again I would take my break earlier, at Cottonwood Campground instead of the Manzanita Rest Area, to more evenly portioned the walking. The hardest part was gaining massive elevation toward the top of the North Rim, near the end, as evident by my sluggish pace—I was mostly dragging my feet. There are many ways to go from one side to the other and then back. I chose driving my car to the North Rim, parking there, hiking down to Bright Angel Campground for the first night, up to the top on the other side for the second, and finally making my way back to the north side on the last day.

Grand Canyon: Bright Angel to South Kaibab Loop

Ice on the South Rim but hot sand at the bottom. That’s what happens when you drop 5,000 after stepping out of your car at the Grand Canyon. Bright Angel down to the Colorado and then back up the South Kaibab. It’s an awesome 20 mile loop if you can handle the toe jamming descent and calf cramping ascent.

We Almost Died Hiking the Grand Canyon | South Kaibab Trail | Phantom Ranch | Bright Angel Trail

One year ago, we snagged reservations at Phantom Ranch, at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. After a year of talking about this hike, we finally got our chance to do it! While there were some serious rough patches, it was an absolutely stunning hike and we're very glad we had this opportunity.

South Kaibab, Colorado River, Bright Angel - Grand Canyon Day Hike

Scenic hike from the South Rim to Colorado River and back in one day. South Kaibab trail starts at Yaki Point where the only access is by shuttle bus. It takes three hours to reach the Colorado River and it is relatively easy. Climbing back to the rim is hard, we chose Bright Angel which provides best shade in the afternoon. It takes five hours or more from the river to the South Rim. There is no water going down, you can refill at Indian Garden on your way up. We recommend to do this trip in October because the temperature inside the canyon is perfect and there is no snow on the rim.
Leave early, bring water, good boots and good physical condition. Climbing down may seem deceivingly easy, remember you have to get back to the rim on the same day, as a rule of thumb consider the time climbing back double the time it takes to reach the river (three hours down, six hours up). In the video we have considerably less footage on Bright Angel, it is a long and hard trail.
We have done this three times and will very likely do it again in the future, it is one of the best ways to truly experience the majesty of the Grand Canyon.
