Granada, Córdoba, and Spain's Costa del Sol

Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide © 2010 | Andalucía's Moorish heritage sparkles in the historic capitals of Granada and Córdoba. And the pride of the Reconquista and the power of Queen Isabel and King Ferdinand enliven the region's great sights. Tasting the smooth sherry and marveling at prancing stallions, we find the passion in Andalusian culture. And we top it off with fun in the Spanish sun on the Costa del Sol. #ricksteves #ricksteveseurope #spain

Granada is all about music and poetry, authentic architectural art and millennial culture. The province hugs the sky from the steep peaks of the Sierra Nevada, its monumental cities extend over the Altiplano and its white villages are scattered between valleys and slopes, which end in the cliffs and beaches of the Costa Tropical. The province of Granada, a privileged tourist destination, allows its visitors to ski in the Sierra Nevada, venture into the villages deep in the Alpujarras, travel the last frontier of Al-Andalus in the Poniente Granadino or explore the caves testifying to troglodyte life.

History :
The whole province is full of attractions for architectural and cultural tourism. The small town of Santa Fe witnessed the preparations for the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus, and Fuente Vaqueros was the birthplace of Federico García Lorca, one of the most important poets and playwrights of Spanish literature.

The Granada plateau preserves the remains of a hominid dating back to one or two million years ago. The inhabitants of Baza, an Iberian people, bequeathed to posterity a relic of great historical and cultural value: the Lady of Baza (Iberian sculpture).

Countryside :
The province of Granada is characterized by a staircase of plateaus that descend from the peaks to the Mediterranean. These high plateaus and the altitude of the land make the winters very cold. This climate has a heavy influence on vegetation, agriculture, livestock and game.

The province of Granada is divided into three well-differentiated regions: the coast, the plain of Granada and the mountain region. Each of them has particular climatic, orographic, historical and geographical characteristics, which make it unique.

Around the 5th century BC. J.-C., coins minted by the Turdules testify to the origins of the capital of this superb province. In the 8th century, the Berbers conquered these lands which would reach their peak with the Nasrids, who would bring economic, social, artistic and cultural development, and whose influence remains palpable today.

Visit Granada and you will discover one of the most beautiful cities in Spain. With the peaks of the Sierra Nevada as a backdrop, this city stands out above all for its architecture and its emblematic monuments, such as the Alhambra. To help you organize your stay in Granada more easily, we have listed the best things to do in Granada: you will know everything to visit the beautiful Andalusian.

In 2019 Granada had a population of 232,462 people, of whom 124,907 were women and 107,555 men. The neighborhoods it has are very different from each other, partly due to the diversity of coexisting cultures and religions and, already in the 19th century, xx, due to the continued immigration that occurred until the 1990s in the context of de-ruralization; the most important are Zaidín, La Chana, Centro-Sagrario, Realejo, Albaicín, Sacromonte and Cartuja.

Malaga City Spain Beautiful City Summer 2023 July Update Costa del Sol | Andalucía [4K 60fps]

Málaga is located in Andalucía, south of Spain. It is also known as the capital of the Costa del Sol. An estimate of six million tourists visit the city every year to enjoy the climate, the sea and its beaches. Málaga is also the largest and most populated coastal city in southern Spain.

This beautiful city has two thousand-eight hundred years of history and considered as one of the oldest cities in Europe. A walk by the old town is a must!

Málaga experienced the greatest civilizations of the Mediterranean, from the Phoenicians and the Greeks to the Romans, due to its strategic location of the port, a significant area along the trade routes since the ancient times.

The city center of Málaga is a place where you can see lots of interesting places. Málaga is rich in culture, modernity and historical monuments.

Its history dates back to the Phoenician times, and later passed onto the Romans and Arabs who left part of their culture and constructions. The capital of the Costal del Sol, Málaga was in the end conquered by the Catholic Kings in the year 1487, leaving an incomplete cathedral due to the lack of funds back then, known as La Manquita. The are also a numerous monuments to visit, including the Alcazaba Arabic Castle and the Gibralfaro castle.

Pablo Picasso was also born in the city of Málaga, the Plaza where he used to play as a child still exists today, as well as his house which is now a museum that is accessible today for everyone.

The Calle Larios offers a mixture of well-known chain stores and boutiques for shopping, and cafetería's and ice cream parlors as well. Through its streets you can find more shops and restaurants and bars.

Málaga has also some of the best tapas bars in the country. Much of which is fish and shellfish due to its Mediterranean location. At the center of the town, a wide range mix of restaurants, from traditional Spanish and seafood, to Moroccan, South American, and Asian cuisines respectively.

Costa Tropical - The alternative to Costa del Sol

The Costa Tropical of Granada province is particularly picturesque beachside, more relaxed, with a perfect sub-tropical climate.

Although it is not as widely known as the Costa del Sol, many tourists are starting to head east towards Costa Tropical, where they can enjoy a taste of traditional Spain with it small charming fishing villages and white mountain villages.

The mountains run right down to the sea and the coastline is typically a series of coves and promontories. Inland from the Costa Tropical you find yourself in Las Alpujarras, one of the most
naturally striking and beautiful regions in Spain, and the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Enjoy sun and ski on the Costa Tropical.

Webinar #4 - Discover Spain's Costa del Sol

In this webinar, our expert Tour Manager, Barbara Barde showed us some of the highlights of this tour and things you might expect to see and do in Spain's Costa del Sol.

Top 10 Places in Spain's Andalusia & Costa del Sol

Top 10 Places in Spain's Andalusia & Costa del Sol accoring to DK travel guide.

10. Sierra Nevada
The Sierra Nevada is a mountain range in Andalucia in the south east of Spain. They are the country's tallest mountains, rising to over 3000 metres. The highest peak is Mulhacén at 3,479 m. It is a popular tourist destination, as its high peaks make skiing possible in one of Europe's most southerly ski resorts, in an area along the Mediterranean Sea predominantly known for its warm temperatures and abundant sunshine.

9. Donana National Park
Doñana National Park is a natural reserve in Andalusia, in the provinces of Huelva and Seville. The park is an area of marshes, shallow streams, and sand dunes in Las Marismas, the delta where the Guadalquivir River flows into the Atlantic Ocean. It was established as a nature reserve in 1969 when the World Wildlife Fund joined with the Spanish government and purchased a section of marshes to protect it.

8. Baeza & Ubeda
Baeza is a town of approximately 16,200 inhabitants in Andalusia, in the province of Jaén, perched on a cliff in the Loma de Úbeda, a mountain range between the river Guadalquivir on the south and its tributary the Guadalimar on the north. It is chiefly known today as having many of the best-preserved examples of Italian Renaissance architecture in Spain.

7. Costa del Sol
The Costa del Sol (literally sun coast) is a long stretch of Mediterranean coastline in the Andalucia region of southern Spain. The Costa del Sol stretches for over 150 km, for 54 km east of Malaga, and as far as the provincial border of Cadiz, some 100 km south west of the city.

6. Ronda
Ronda is a town in Malaga in Spain. Set in and around a deep gorge spanned by an impressive bridge, the relaxing atmosphere here is a great break from some of the more tourist-ridden places on the south coast of Spain, however it can still be packed with day-trippers from the Costa del Sol, especially during the peak summer months.

5. Cádiz
Cádiz is on a narrow slice of land surrounded by the sea. The older part of Cadiz, within the remnants of the city walls, is commonly referred to as the Old Town. It is characterised by the antiquity of its various quarters, among them El Pópulo, La Viña, and Santa María, which present a marked contrast to the newer areas of town. While the Old City's street plan consists of narrow winding alleys connecting large plazas, newer areas of Cadiz typically have wide avenues and more modern buildings.

4. Cordoba City & La Mezquite
Very few places in the world can boast of having been the capital of a Roman province (Hispania Ulterior), the capital of an Arab State (Al-Andalus) and a Caliphate. Such splendor is palpable in the intellectual wealth of this city, that has seen the birth of figures like Seneca, Averroes, and Maimonides. The historic quarter of Córdoba is a beautiful network of small streets, alleys, squares and whitewashed courtyards arranged around the Mezquita, which reflects the city's prominent place in the Islamic world during medieval times.

3. Real Alcázar, Seville
A beautiful palace in Mudéjar (Moorish) style, built in the XIV Century by Pedro I the Cruel. With its myriad rooms, extravagant architecture, lavish gardens with many courtyards, ponds and secrets to be explored, it is a fascinating place to visit. Be sure to check out the room where Christopher Columbus's journey to the Americas were planned.

2. Seville Cathedral and La Giralda
Once judged the third largest church in the world after Saint Peter's in Rome and Saint Paul's in London, this is now arguably the largest church in the world when compared using the measurement of volume. The fifteenth-century cathedral occupies the site of the former great mosque built in the late twelfth century. The central nave rises to an awesome 37m over a total area of 11,520m².

1. Moorish Granada
Granada is a mid-sized city located in Granada Province in the Andalucia region of Spain. Rich in history and culture, Granada is a very worthwhile city in Spain for a tourist. In addition to a rich multicultural history, the Alhambra and other monuments, a student-driven nightlife, and skiing and trekking in the nearby Sierra Nevada, Granada offers a break from the summer heat of other Andalusian cities such as Córdoba or Seville.

MORE INFO ABOUT THE VIDEO ????

Spain is a complex country! It’s also a pretty easy going one. But there are certain things that you just don’t want to get wrong. And here they are!

11. Don’t go OTT on please and thank you.
In Spanish we just don’t use the words as much. We are more likely to work ‘please’ and ’thank you’ into the tone of how we speak, or by tweaking the words (such as adding “ito” to the end of a word).

10. Don’t put bread on your plate.
In Spain, you always leave your bread beside your plate on the table. It sites beside your cutlery, because it kind of is a piece of cutlery.

9. Don’t eat with your hand under the table.
I grew up with no elbows on the table. But here in Spain we also have the rule that you should have your hands above the table at all times. Because you might have a knife??

8. Don’t offer guests a beer at 5pm
Because we eat lunch and dinner later, beer o’clock is usually about 8pm… not 5pm.

7. Don’t help with the dishes after parties.
It’s just not something that’s done here. At the end of a party or dinner party, you might help tidy up slightly, but you don’t help do the dishes.

6. Don’t be a ‘pesado’ in social situations.
Chill out! Don’t ask people what their job is straight away when you meet them in a social setting and don’t expect people to cut to the chase when telling a story - we take our time here!

5. Don’t misinterpret loud conversations.
When Yoly speaks with her mother on the phone, it can get heated. But they’re not arguing - it’s just that conversations here often sound more intense.

4. Don’t generalise about Spain.
This is a highly regional country. So don’t assume that every region of Spain has the same language, customs or food.

3. Don’t call Catalan a dialect of Spanish.
Catalan is its own language - and don’t get that wrong (especially when speaking to a Catalan)

2. Don’t used ‘usted’ willy nilly.
Here in Spain we’re pretty informal and so don’t use “usted” unless we’re speaking with older people or in very formal situations.

1. Don’t mention the civil war casually.
The Spanish civil war and the dictatorship is a really complex topic, and still an open wound in Spain. So wait until you know someone pretty well before diving into the topic.

Welcome to the Costa del Sol. Coming up we have got some insight to Malaga, Marbella, Torremolinos, Benalmadena and Nerja.

Malaga is the place to go for culture and history, with famous sites such as Alcazaba Fort and Malaga Cathedral spread across the city.

First stop for us out of Malaga is Torremolinos. It’s everything you’d expect from a Spanish beach resort; with a huge variety of beaches, hotels and activities. La Carihuela would be our pick of the beaches for families with young children, as it’s a bit smaller with lots of shade and there’s lots of restaurants right on the beach.

We found that many of the beaches in Torremolinos were huge and really wide open; none more so than Los Alamos beach, up near the airport. It gets really huge and a little bit sparse, which means that if you want to get away from the main crowds, you can just enjoy all of this space.

Just 3km along the coast, Benalmadena is the next town along from Torremolinos. What we really liked the most was the huge amount of activities you can do. Up first on our list was to visit the Marina.

Next up, beaches! The beaches in Benalmadena are similar to those in Torremolinos. Expect long stretches of sand with sun loungers, shops, restaurants and plenty of things to do. Away from the beaches, the cable car takes you 771m to the peak of Mount Calamorro, where you can look down on the whole of the Costa del Sol. Another reason to come to Benalmadena, Mariposario houses hundreds of butterflies and is a great place to take the family to learn all about their lifecycle and environments.

While in Benalmadena, we stayed at the super popular Holiday Palace Resort Hotel. We’re here at the Holiday Palace in Benalmadena. It overlooks the sea and you’ve got the gorgeous mountains right behind you but you’d never really need to leave this hotel because everything is here on hand. There’s a huge pool, mini golf, garden, kids play area, activities every day, shops and more. The rooms are huge and ours had mini kitchens and balconies. The only real downside for us was that the wifi was slow and really expensive.

Further west along the coast are Marbella and Puerto Banus. These resorts are where the rich and famous come to holiday, so it’s pricey down here, but you’ll find some of the Costa del Sol’s nicest beaches, clubs and hotels. Marbella has 17 miles of coastline, split into 24 different beaches, the most renowned of which is the 4-mile stretch famously referred to as the Golden Mile. Another thing to bear in mind if you plan to visit Marbella or Puerto Banus are the high prices. Food can be especially costly. For four of us to have 1 dish and a couple of soft drinks each, it came to 80 euros. It’s a pricey one here in Puerto Banus! But if you’re coming here, that’s what you need to expect.

We stayed at the Melia Marbella Banus, which is typical of the more high-end hotels you’ll find here. It’s really expensive but you do get what you paid for, as it’s a resort hotel in every sense of the word.

Nerja is the last stop on our guides to the Costa del Sol. About an hour’s drive east of Malaga, Nerja is where to come to get away from the tourist resorts and discover the secrets of the Andalusian countryside. The Balcon de Europa is one of the most popular tourist sites in Nerja. It’s a viewpoint that gives you some magnificent views of the coastline.

Granada, Spain: The Exquisite Alhambra - Rick Steves’ Europe Travel Guide - Travel Bite

More info about travel to Granada: Granada's dominant sight is the Alhambra, the last and greatest Moorish palace. For two centuries, until 1492, Granada reigned as the capital of a dwindling Moorish empire. As Christian forces pushed the Moors farther and farther south, this palace was the last hurrah of a sophisticated civilization. #ricksteveseurope #spain #granada

5-Day Spain Tour: Seville, Cordoba, Toledo, Ronda, Costa del Sol and Granada from Madrid

Take your time with five days to explore some of Spain's most famous cities. With Moorish Kingdoms in Granada, thriving resorts of the Costa del Sol, and the many UNESCO World Heritage sites in Cordoba, Seville and Toledo, this is a tour deep into the heart of Andalucia.
Andalucia is one of the most attractive areas within the Mediterranean regions, due to its mild climate, e

Costa del Sol - Spain's famous 'Sunny Coast'

Without doubt the Costa del Sol is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.

Stretching from Almeria to Tarifa, it caters for all tastes, ages and nationalities; with such a wide range of facilities and attractions, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Miles of sandy beaches, fantastic all year round warm climate and modern facilities keep tourists flocking back year after year to resorts such as Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Fuengirola, Marbella
and Estepona.

East of Malaga is less popular than west, but no less appealing, from Rincon de la Victoria, Torre del Mar and Velez Malaga to Nerja; the area combines beautiful coastline with
white-washed villages and some of the most spectacular inland scenery of the Axarquía.

Nerja - The Jewel of the Costa del Sol

Nerja is situated at the eastern tip of the Costa del Sol, in the province of Malaga, 50 kilometres from the city of Malaga and within an hour and a half’s drive from Granada and the ski resort of the Sierra Nevada.

Sheltered by the impressive Sierra Almijara mountain range, this once sleepy fishing village is now one of the most popular tourist resorts along the coast, with a population of over 12,000. The town has resisted too much re-development and high rise apartment blocks, preferring to stay a charming seaside town, attracting the more discerning holidaymaker; the town is often referred to as the ‘’Jewel of the Costa del Sol’.

One of the town’s most impressive attractions is the Balcón de Europa (the Balcony of Europe), a wonderful promenade, stretching along the edge of a soaring cliff top, which was once the location of a Moorish castle. The platform has spectacular panoramic views of the Mediterranean coastline, with its backdrop of mountains.

The deep Andalusian culture that the town exudes, perfect climate and cosmopolitan atmosphere, has made Nerja one of the most attractive holiday hotspots on the Costa del Sol.
