Leon Nicaragua Travel Guide - The City of Revolution | 90+ Countries with 3 Kids
During our trip to Nicaragua, also known as the ‘land of lakes and volcanoes’, we visited León, San Juan del Sur’s artsy, calmer, and slightly more sophisticated older cousin. It is the second largest city in Nicaragua located along the Chiquito River. It’s full of street-art, rich history, friendly locals and delicious food. In the evening, there are a lot of fun salsa parties.
Walking around León, it feels like being in an open museum of history because the locals had a tough past fighting against dictatorship for decades and you can still see the marks everywhere. In 1990, Leon was the first city to become independent and the party that consisted of radical poets, students, and farmers which started the revolution was formed here, so the locals are very proud of that.
We would suggest visiting Museo Histórico de la Revolución where you can get more formal education about it, but for an informal one, you can actually read the history on the streets. There are graffiti and colorful murals, and even bullets holes left untouched to serve as a reminder of their rebellion.
If you ever visit León, a great place to stay is the Harvest House. It offers a mixture of local colonial and modern features, the hosts are very professional and polite and it’s safe. It is also quiet and a great break from the busy streets, but really close to the center of the city, so everything is at a walking distance.

Roughly 130 kilometers away from Managua, Nicaragua, the city of Granada is the oldest most well-preserved Spanish Colonial city in Latin America. Granada is a Nicaraguan city on the shores of Lake Nicaragua. It’s home to multiple Spanish colonial landmarks that have survived repeated pirate invasions of Granada, originally dating to 1583. The Centro Cultural Convento San Francisco nearby is famed for its displays of pre-Columbian statues.

Discover San Juan del Sur - Paradise Found in Nicaragua | 90+ Countries with 3 Kids
San Juan del Sur Nicaragua is one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever visited in the world! Surrounded by two mountains on the Pacific Ocean, what was once a picturesque fishing village, is now one of the most sought after destinations in the country. We originally planned to visit for 3 days but it enjoyed it so much that we stayed for 7 weeks!
The town of San Juan del Sur offers a great selection of hotels, restaurants, beaches, nightclubs, language schools and more.
During our first week we stayed at the cozy boutique hotel named Alcazar and highly recommend it. It is located in the heart of San Juan del Sur and has incredible views of the sunsets each night.
San Juan del Sur is the ultimate destination to relax and go surfing on unspoiled beaches including Maderas, Hermosa, Marsella, El Remanzo, Majagual, La Flor, El Ostional, El Coco, Las Salinas, El Astillero, and El Yankee. You can also go fishing, whale watching, horseback riding practice yoga and so much more.

We visit the famous Masaya volcano, kayaking on lake Nicaragua and much more! Granada is a beautiful colonial city with so much to offer make sure you add this city to your itinerary when coming to Nicaragua. I want to add that yes I was spat at by a local, this happens everywhere in the world. Nicaragua is a beautiful country and majority of people are friendly. Don't let my experience put you off going as it is one of my favourite countries!

Ometempe is an island paradise located in the center of lake Nicaragua. Made up of two volcanos there are plenty of outdoor activities to do! We recommend renting a motor bike for your visit as the island is not too walkable. We hope this video helps you have an amazing time in Nicaragua!
