Gosaikunda, also spelled Gosainkunda and Gosain Kunda is an alpine freshwater oligotrophic lake in Nepal's Langtang National Park, located at an elevation of 4,380 m (14,370 ft) in the Rasuwa District with a surface of 13.8 ha (34 acres). Together with associated lakes, the Gosaikunda Lake complex comprises 1,030 ha (2,500 acres) in size and was designated a Ramsar site on 29 September 2007.
The lake melts to form the Trishuli River; it remains frozen for six months in winter October to June. There are 108 lakes in the vicinity. The Lauribina La pass at an elevation of 4,610 m (15,120 ft) is on its outskirts.

Generally hike to Gosaikunda is 5 days long however it take about 30 minutes round trip from Kathmandu

It is believed that Gosainkunda came into existence when Lord Shiva thrust his holy Trident (Trishul) into the mountain to extract water in order to cool his stinging throat after he had swallowed poison. So, it is believed that once you take bath in the holy lake, all of your pains, sorrows, and sins are washed off.
Gosainkunda is not only famous in terms of religious places but it is also popular as one of the best destinations for trekking. Internal as well as foreign tourists enjoy so much during the trekking there.

On 5th of May 2017, We made a day tour to Gosaikunda by Helicopter. 4380 meters from sea level, Gosainkunda is a holy mountain as well as, a popular trekking destination in Langtang region. Gosainkunda lake is said to be a sacred lake and is revered by the both Hindu and Buddhist. It is believed that taking a dip in its holy water will fulfill one's wishes and take away the bad shin. Drinking it’s water cure disease. During full-moon night in August, (Janai Purnima) a weeklong celebration is held here by pilgrims and jhankris (Shaman priests).

Gosaikunda Lake area is a small Himalayan plateau situated nearly at 4000m/13122ft from sea level. Surrounded with high Himalayan peaks in all four directions; it is the last settlement for the Langtang valley trekking parties. Beautiful grassy slops remained on the bank of Gosaikunda lake has good lodges for those who want to spend the night.
Our trip leaves from Kathmandu along with the first rays of sun enjoying the mesmerizing views of green hills and deep valleys, villages and settlements, river and road lines and of course high ridges and snow mountains at our horizontal views. We pass rocky canyons having made so close view of them before we see the Gosaikunda settlement and lakes scattered here & there in the area.
Our favorite itinerary we would like to suggest you:
Fly from Kathmandu after your breakfast.
The flight is just of 22 – 25 minute.
Upon landing, walk to the lodge and enjoy the hot drink gazing the unfolded mountain views. In the high season Gosaikunda lake is a quite busy town with local people, porters, guides and of course the travelers. So observe what goes on is really an excellent thing to do.

✨ हिन्दु पौराणिक किंवदन्ती अनुसार उहिले देवता र दानवले अमृतको लागि समुन्द्र मन्थन गर्दा त्यहाँबाट कालकूट विष उत्पन्न भयो। दानवले यो विष देवता विरूद्ध प्रयोग गर्लान् भनी महादेवले उक्त विष आफैंले सेवन गरे। विषले पोलेर उनको घाँटी निलो हुन गएकोले उनलाई निलकण्ठ पनि भनिन्छ। त्यसै विषको डाहा शान्त पार्न हिमालय पर्वतमा गएर आफ्नो त्रिशूलले भित्ता खोपी त्यसबाट तीनधारा भई बगेर उत्पत्ति भएको गोसाइँकुण्डको चिसो तालमा डुबुल्की लगाएर बसेको किंवदन्ती छ। सोही कुण्डको बीचमा अहिले पनि भगवान् शिव अर्थात् महादेव विराजमान रहनुभएको विश्वास गरिँदै आइएको छ।
✨ बौद्धहरूले चाँहि तालको बीचमा आर्य अवलोकितेश्वर (फावा चेन्-रेजिग्) रहेको जनविश्वास गर्दछन्। ‘जाम्लिङ ग्योस्साद’ नामक तिब्बती भूगोलको किताबमा तालमा भएको मूर्ति अवलोकितेश्वरको भएको भन्दै त्यस बारे यसरी वर्णन गरेको छ - ‘त्यहाँ ताल जस्तो पोखरीमा मानव आकारको प्राकृतिक ढुङ्गाको मूर्ति छ। त्यो मूर्ति खरानी-नीलो रङको छ, अनुहार गेरू रङको गलबन्दले ढाकेको छ र नौ वटा गोमन सर्पका टाउकाले संरक्षण दिइरहेको त्यो मूर्ति पानीमा उत्तानो परेर सुतिरहेको जस्तो देखिन्छ,’ भनेर हर्क गुरुङको ‘मैले देखेको नेपाल’ भन्ने किताबमा उल्लेख गरेको छ।
✨ तामाङ बोन्पो (झाँक्री) हरू गोसाइँकुण्डलाई चो-कर्पो (सेतो कुण्ड) भन्ने गर्छन् । यसैगरी गोसाइँकुण्डलाई याब् क्षेग्याल क्षेम्पो (पिता) र युम् फमा डोल्मो (माता) र ल्हा-क्षेन्पो मादेउ (ठूलो भगवान) को रूपमा मान्ने चलन छ ।
