Welcome to Somalia - Goobweyn Somalia

Welcome to Goobweyn, it's where the Juba River meets the Indian Ocean. During filming we went to the river, but right before we got there, Some of the locals pleaded with us not to proceed and to go back. I was able to capture some of that conversation so you can get a glimpse of the life and death situation in some parts of Somalia. With Al-Shabaab lurking just on the other side of the river, if they see any armed men or cameras they will start shooting indiscriminately. Knowing that the livestock and the locals fetching water at the river would suffer the most if we advance any further, we made the decision to go back. Nonetheless we were able see the spectacular river and of course away from the civilian population.

Kismayo: Ragged and battered - but slowly coming back to life.

Kismayo is the second largest metropolitan city in southern Somalia, and the interim headquarter of Jubaland state.

After more than 25 years of war that led so many deaths and destruction, the southern seaport city of Kismayo is considered the safest place in southern Somalia, despite the challenges.

Kismayo eager to recapture to its former glory as tourism destination, but still has a long way to go before it can fully regain its past glory.

Somalia, located in the Horn of Africa, has a rich and diverse history that spans centuries. It was home to ancient civilizations, such as the city-states of Mogadishu, Merca, and Zeila, which thrived as trade hubs along the Indian Ocean. Somali culture flourished through interactions with Arab, Persian, and Indian merchants, leaving a lasting impact on the language, architecture, and customs.

In the late 19th century, Somalia fell under European colonial rule, with Italy and Britain dividing the region. After gaining independence in 1960, Somalia experienced a tumultuous period marked by political instability, military coups, and civil unrest. Unfortunately, these challenges persist to some extent today, with ongoing conflicts and issues of governance.

Despite these difficulties, Somalia's natural beauty remains awe-inspiring. With stunning landscapes that range from picturesque coastlines along the Indian Ocean to vast deserts and fertile plains, the country offers diverse ecosystems. Lush green valleys, towering cliffs, and breathtaking waterfalls can be found in regions like the Cal Madow and Golis Mountains. The crystalline waters of the Somali coastline host coral reefs teeming with marine life, making it a paradise for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts.

Moreover, Somalia boasts a vibrant cultural heritage. The Somali people have a strong tradition of oral poetry and storytelling, which has been passed down through generations. Traditional dances, such as the lively Dhaanto and the elegant Buraanbur, showcase the country's rich artistic expressions. Intricate handicrafts, like colorful textiles, woven baskets, and camel bone carvings, reflect the skilled craftsmanship of the Somali people.

Somalia's beauty is not limited to its natural and cultural assets. The resilience, hospitality, and warmth of its people contribute to its allure. Despite facing numerous challenges, Somalis continue to demonstrate their spirit and determination to rebuild and create a brighter future for their country.

In summary, Somalia's history is a tapestry of ancient civilizations, colonial legacies, and ongoing struggles for stability. Its natural landscapes, cultural heritage, and resilient people make it a place of undeniable beauty and potential.
