30 Things I Wish I Knew Before Flying Down To Istanbul + Grand & Egyptian Bazaar Fake Market Tour.

#dailyvlog #istanbul
During a walking tour of the Grand Bazaar, Egyptian Bazaar and the surrounding area, I narrate 30 things I wish I knew about Istanbul before flying down here as well as give a brief history of the origins of the Metropolis of Istanbul.
Check out my Istanbul playlist for more great videos on Istanbul.

NOTE: SAVE BIG ON YOUR DATA PLAN WITH THE AIRLO E-SIM CARD FOR $8US FOR 3 GB OF DATA INSTEAD OF PAYING $60US FOR THE TOURIST SIM CARD FROM TURKCELL, TURKISH TELECOM OR VODAFONE. Here's the link: that works on your existing card and is a lot cheaper than spending the min. $60US. During my 10 day trip to Istanbul, I used less than 2 GB of data for the google translator, google GPS, Whatsapp, Uber, Movit for the bus, and emails, so 3 GB should be fine--download the app and just scan the QR code after you pay and you're all set--you don't need another physical SIM card to use it.

A friend of mine told me they changed the cell phone rules yet again since I did the video regarding the Tourist SIM Card from the airport. So, the first time you visit, you can buy the tourist sim card at the airport for $60US (you can''t use a local Turkish sim card without proof of Turkish residency). After 120 days, you have to pay a 6,091 TL ($300 US) registration fee to be able to use the same cell phone with a tourist sim card or it's locked out of the network. The best way to get around this is just to bring a different cell phone the next time you visit if it's over 120 days since your last visit.

BTW--I did notice last time I was at the airport that they rent out portable WIFI units for $80US at a fourth booth that looks like a 20,000mAh portable cell battery and it's supposed to link to your cell phone. From that, you can call people from whatsapp, which most people use in the city. I suspect this might be another alternative to the registration fee if you're down there a second time after 120 days. I'll find out more the next time I visit Istanbul. And bringing two cell phones with you is not an option as I discussed in greater detail in the video, so buy a new cell phone, not a refurb., as you have no idea if a refurb. was already used before in Turkey and is locked out of the system.

Ultimate Souvenir Shopping Istanbul (Grand Bazaar, Egyptian / Spice Bazaar, + Secret Local Bazaar)

Explore the historic bazaars of Istanbul, Turkiye as we shop for Turkey's famous soaps, replicas, foods, scarves and more! Enjoy the sensory overload of the lights of the Turkish lanterns, the soft Turkish rugs, the taste of baklava, the smells of Turkish coffee, and the sounds of shop owners luring you into their store. This shopping adventure is not to be missed!

We start at the Grand Bazaar, where we explore the antique market, rugs at (N)izam Rugs, and find a head scarf (and cheaper prices) just outside!

Next we head to Mahmut Pasa Carsisi. Our tour guide on the free walking tour (in the last video) recommended this market as where the locals shop for replica goods. The prices here are much better than the prices in the Grand Bazaar, and we enjoy looking at all the knockoff offerings.

We saved the best for last, and head to the Spice Bazaar aka Egyptian Bazaar. Here we find organic Turkish Soap, a delicious restaurant Pandeli, and best of all SAMPLES! This place is better than Costco, and after sampling it we couldn't resist buying the greatest baklava we've ever had (Gulluoglu), beef pastrami, sheep milk cheese aged in goat skin, kaymak (Cankurtaran), AND coffee (Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi Mahdumlari)!!!

Such a delicious, fun, shopping madventure! We're so thankful you're along for the journey with us! Please subscribe :)

1. The construction of Grand Bazaar started in #1461 after Sultan Mehmet II conquered Constantinople as the trading center of the Ottoman Empire

2. Following the growth of the #Ottoman #Empire across three continents, the market became the hub of Mediterranean trade by the beginning of the 17th century

3. There are around #4000 shops in 60 covered streets of the Grand Bazaar, bustling with around #250000 visitors every day.

4. You can find a large variety of products in the market: #jewelery, #silk #ceramics #copperware #leather #antique #handicrafts and #contemporary #creations among other things. As a result, the Grand Bazaar is one of the most sought-after market places across the globe.

5. In the early days, each street was reserved for a specific #trade or #profession. Compared to the earlier days, the #market today sells ten times more jewelry.

6. Bargaining or haggling, called ‘pazarlik’ in Turkish, is part of the shopping experience at the Grand Bazaar - and is encouraged.

7. Resembling a maze, the market has 21 gates and 56 interconnecting vaulted passages.

8. Until the 19th century, the shops, also known as ‘dolap,’ did not use signs. When the market was restored after the #1894 earthquake, Western-style storefront signs were adapted.

9. Compared to other parts of the world, #gold #jewelry is slightly cheaper in Turkey because of the low cost of craftsmanship. Many of Turkey's renowned goldsmiths sell their goods in the Grand Bazaar.

Grand bazaar Istanbul | One of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world

Grand bazaar Istanbul | One of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world.

The Grand Bazaar in Istanbul is one of the biggest and most seasoned canvassed markets on the planet, with 61 covered roads and more than 4,000 shops on a complete space of 30,700 m2, attracting in the middle of 250,000 and 400,000 visitors every day. In 2014, it was recorded Number one among the world’s most-visited tourist destinations with 91million yearly visitors. The Grand Bazaar in Istanbul is regularly viewed as one of the primary shopping centers on the planet. The Grand Bazaar in Istanbul is a great place to find souvenirs for your friends and family back home. But it’s also a great place to get lost in for a few hours.
There are plenty of stores in the Grand Bazaar, with a wide variety of items on sale. The main things you should buy from the Grand Bazaar are listed below.
• Dishes
• Glassware
• Leather goods
• Textiles
• Carpets and rugs
• Antiques
• Traditional art
• Customized jewelry
• Turkish delight
• Saffron
• Spices
• and many other things

Grand Bazaar was built in 1461 after the Ottoman conquer of Constantinople. At that time it was built out of wood, but today we can see it in stone and brick. It began as a small bazaar but grew to become the largest covered market in Turkey. The oldest buildings in the market are two bedestens. Bedestens in Turkish means cloth seller’s market and the ones that have the title of the oldest ones are Bedesten and another one Sandal Bedesten. They are a remarkable example of Ottoman architecture and are not to be missed when visiting Bazaar. The Grand Bazaar has been exposed to more than 20 earthquakes and fire disasters until the fire in 1954 and it has taken its current form with the renovations made after the 1894 earthquake.
Here you can find plenty of different things. Ceramics, Clothes, footwear, jewelry, carpets are just some of them. Since the market is huge, so is the offer, so explore it thoroughly before shopping. The bargain is considered normal in Turkey, so take your chance to lower the price of the things you want to buy. Many people come prepared here because they know they will buy much for low prices.

The Grand Bazaar is located inside the walled city of Istanbul, in the district of Fatih and in the neighbourhood bearing the same name (Kapalıçarşı). It stretches roughly from west to east between the mosques of Beyazit and of Nuruosmaniye.
The entrance gates, up to 22 in all, lead to different sales areas Each gate also has a number. The most common ones are Beyazıt and Nuruosmaniye, because Kalpakçılar Street, the main street of the bazaar, stretches between them. If you know the entrances number, it’s easy to reach the places where you can buy jewellery, carpets, ceramics, footwear, clothing, food, handicrafts, spices, and so on.
The dealers will speak to you in Spanish, English, Russian, German and many other languages. Depending on the appearance or treacherous conversation as you walk by. Don’t be fooled by the tag prices. Remember that you can always bargain in the Grand Bazaar. If you are not satisfied with what is on offer, move on to other stores. There are very few stores that sell rare products. You will probably find the same or similar product in 10 other stores. A good tip is to take a picture of that store and its business card. If you ever want to come back, this is the only way you can find it. Do not rely on your memory.
Sellers in Turkey are generally quite respectful. They are not as pushed as in other countries. Buyers do best when they are friendly and relaxed, especially if they have a talent for conversation and flattery. It’s advisable to start haggling when you’re genuinely interested in the purchase and to not back down after the price has been agreed. Doing so is a serious offence.
Shopping in the famous Grand Bazaar is an experience of a very special kind. The famous bazaar is truly the perfect place to seek out unique finds.
A trick that often works is to offer a starting amount to the trader. This is a good way to start negotiating. And you also get better results when you don’t show too much interest. The sellers are very skilful and if they sense that you really want the product, they’ll ask a very high price. If you know how to haggle, they may even drop the price down to half the initial figure.

The distance between Istanbul Airport and Grand Bazaar is about 47 kms and takes about 50 minutes to reach by road. One can reach the bazaar from the airport using other means of transport too. This would require you to take the metro from the airport till Zeytinburnu and then catch a tram from Beyazit to the Grand Bazaar or either by road, in a car or a hired taxi to reach Grand Bazaar

Grand Bazaar Istanbul, Turkey - 4000 Shops, Mostly Sellng the Same Things

First stop after our travel day was the Grand Bazaar - new fun fact - Wikipedia doesn’t work in Istanbul ... The Grand Bazaar is one of the oldest and largest covered markets in the world. 61 covered streets and over 4000 shops.
The shops can basically be divided into one of the following categories: - Jewelry - separate shops and areas for gold and silver; - Turkish delight and sweets; - Turkish rugs; - Turkish lanterns; - Knock off sunglasses and watches; - Knock off perfume and cologne; - Knock off scarves and bags; - Knock off shoes and jeans; and
- Some general souvinier shops;

I was really tempted to buy some glasses, a watch, and maybe some shoes, but I refrained. We spent a significant part of our time at the market seaching for some earrings for Ezri and ultimately were successful.
We also spent way too much on Turkish Delight. This one shop owner kept on stuffing our kids faces with so much Turkish Delight that we had to buy some. So, we picked a three rolls and some chocolates, then he vaccumed sealed it and weighed it ... Over a Kilogram ... that’ll be $60CAD please ... We ate it all, but another travel tip, get it weighed first and negotiate the price before they vaccum seal it and all of your bargaining power is gone.
People in Istanbul were very very friendly and not just when they were trying to sell you stuff. We had probably 5 different people ask if they could help us with our bags, everyone would welcome us, talk to our kids, and the most frequent exclamation was, “maşallah” or “wonderful!” - there were fans of our family and especially our little red head.

Shopping at the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, Turkey (Kapalıçarşı - Büyük Çarşı)

Shopping at the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, Turkey (Kapalıçarşı - Büyük Çarşı) Travel Video. Today it's my birthday and I can't think of a better way to celebrate than by going into the Grand Bazaar right behind me. We're going shopping. So we made it to the Grand Bazaar. This is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the entire world and it takes up sixty one streets and it has over three thousand shops though I have a feeling it's still growing and spreading out across the city.

It's always crowded here at the Grand Bazaar but the best time to come is early in the morning. There is not as many people.
