God’s Own Country!! SOUTH INDIAN SEAFOOD on Houseboat | Backwaters - Kerala, India!

Alappuzha (also known as Alleppey), India - The Backwaters of Kerala are one of the biggest draws to Kerala, and before going, I had no idea why. After visiting, I now know that the Backwaters are one of the reasons why Kerala is known as “God’s Own Country.”

After arriving in Alappuzha (Alleppey), we headed straight to the house-boat, a luxurious floating house-boat on the Kerala backwaters. The boat was beautiful with four full bedrooms, a full upper deck with dining room and viewing platform, and most importantly, a huge kitchen with private chefs to cook us an Indian seafood Kerala meal of your dreams! #IndianFood #Kerala #Backwaters

Ebbin had arranged for a huge seafood meal on the boat. As soon as we started sailing on the Backwaters, the amazing chefs started cooking. There were over a dozen different dishes, seafood extravaganza. The meal was absolutely incredible, and the scenery of the water, lakes, rivers, and lagoons, were spectacular.

For the rest of the afternoon, we relaxed around the boat, and eventually docked for the evening in a small village. For dinner we had a simple Kerala meal of rice porridge, with a few different chutneys, and green gram, mung beans.

Sleeping on the boat was fantastic, so quiet and peaceful, and it was a joy to wake up in the morning ready to go again. For breakfast, they made one of the best egg curries I’ve ever had in my life - one of the reasons I love Kerala so much, curry for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Thank you to Alleppey Houseboat ( for giving us a great deal on a house-boat, and for the amazing food and service. An incredible experience, and truly God's Own Country!

South Indian SEAFOOD FEAST in the KERALA BACKWATERS + Houseboat Tour | Alappuzha, India

???? EBBIN:
???? CRUISE LAND HOUSEBOAT
???? DAVID’S BEEN HERE SHIRTS & MERCH:

Even though I had to say goodbye to my friend Vishnu, my third day in Kerala continued in the city of Alappuzha with my boy Ebbin Jose. Ebbin is an amazing food vlogger from Kerala who showed me around for the rest of my time in the state! Come along with us as we enjoy a phenomenal South Indian seafood feast in the Kerala Backwaters and take a tour of our amazing houseboat in Alappuzha, India!

My afternoon continued in gorgeous Alappuzha, also known as Alleppey. Our first order of business was to check into our houseboat. Instead of taking my bulging suitcase onboard, I grabbed a few essentials and a change of clothes and put them in my carryon.

I hopped on our three-bedroom, traditional-style houseboat and was immediately amazed. The first thing I saw was the captain’s seat where he steers the boat. Inside, I met the staff, who greeted me with a handshake and a hug, along with a fresh coconut with a straw in it. The coconut water inside was so refreshing and exactly what I needed!

Inside the houseboat was a nice living room with five couches, chairs, a dining table, a TV, and more. On the dining table were pineapple, bananas, and bottled water. Then, I went off to explore the rest of the houseboat!

The three identical bedrooms were located down a hall on the side of the boat. They contained a twin bed, a ceiling fan, and a nice bathroom with a toilet, sink, and shower. It was like being in a hotel! There’s a sink along the hall where you can wash your hands before and after meals. At the very back of the boat are the kitchen and a balcony where you can relax.

Back inside, the chef brought me some tender coconut meat on a plate. It was so cold, slimy, and refreshing. While our chef cooked up a fish fry in the kitchen, I took over for the captain and drove the houseboat for a bit while admiring the rice paddy fields and coconut trees around us.

Then, it was time to eat! Our feast included rice, sambar, mixed vegetables, cabbage with coconut with green chilies, pachadi, chicken curry, long beans with carrots, lemon pickle, kingfish, papadum, salad with onions, cucumber, tomatoes, and more!

We started by mixing the sambar with the rice and vegetable curry and crunching the papadum over it. I like how it binds the rice together and adds a nice crunch. I loved the coconut oil in it. It binds all the flavors together! The curd was delicious, and there were coconut pieces throughout the dishes. The flavors were so light! There wasn’t too much spice and nothing was overbearing.

I really loved the long beans, the cabbage with coconut and green chilies, and the freshwater fish. The chicken was fresh and organic, and I loved the pachadi with yogurt and coconut. The lemon pickle was really nice, and I loved that the kingfish had no bones in it. I followed that with puliserry on my rice. By the end of the meal, the flavors had all started blending together!

As we ate, we docked near the Buddhist temple Ebbin had mentioned earlier, Karumadikuttan Temple. Inside the white pagoda is a Buddha from the 9th-14th century. It’s made from black granite and is cut in half! I had never seen anything like it!

It was so hot outside, so we headed back onto the boat for dessert, payasam! It’s a super sweet porridge that contained grains, vermicelli noodles, and raisins. It was really good and was a nice way to combat the heat!

I hope you enjoyed coming along on my south Indian seafood feast in the Kerala backwaters! If you did, please give this video a thumbs up and leave a comment below. Taking a Houseboat Tour on the Kerala Backwaters

We finally made it to Kerala and that means taking our first houseboat tour on the Kerala Backwaters!! We decided to spoil ourselves and get a private houseboat tour so that we could fully relax and enjoy the backwaters as much as possible during our one day in Kerala. In this video we share with you what it's like to take a private houseboat on the Kerala backwaters and also give lots of information on how to plan your own trip here! A houseboat tour in Kerala really is an exceptional experience, so we hope this video is a helpful guide to the Kerala backwaters in India that can be used by anyone traveling in India and planning this awesome backwater adventure :)

We based our houseboat tour out of Alleppey, Kerala, which is a really popular spot for tourists in India to explore the backwaters from. We were able to take the train here from Goa and easily organized a houseboat tour once we arrived in the town. If you are a foreigner in India and are headed to Alleppey, definitely plan to spend a night on a houseboat to make the most of the trip, because in our experience, there isn't too much else to do in the town. For anyone in India, Alleppey is absolutely worth visiting just for the Kerala backwaters, but if we were planning your trip to the backwaters, we would recommend just two nights (one night before your houseboat tour, and one night on the houseboat).

It is hard to believe it, but this is our last stop in India!!! Houseboating on the Kerala backwaters was the perfect way to round out our trip in India. It has been a whirlwind and we have seen and learned so much in our 6 weeks here. We are already dreaming of where we will visit the next time we are in India, but for we are heading to a new country that we CANNOT wait to share with you!

Kerala Houseboat Travel Guide - EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW! Alleppey, India

???? CRUISE LAND HOUSEBOAT:
???? WATCH - 72-HOUR TRAVEL GUIDE OF MUMBAI:
???? BLOG - 24-HOUR KERALA HOUSEBOAT EXPERIENCE:

The only guide you’ll need that tells you everything you need to know about booking a houseboat stay in the Kerala backwaters!

The city of Alleppey is a gateway to the most famous stretch of the backwaters in the Kuttanad region. Here’s what you need to know!

Houseboats can range in size and quality and can boast one to six bedrooms. Consider your options and choose the best one that suits your needs and budget.

My personal choice was the Cruise Land Houseboat. For a 24-hour stay, you’ll pay 30,000 rupees/$393 USD. This price covers your lodgings, food, activities, and the boat’s staff.

Check-in is usually at noon, and keep in mind that the backwaters can be congested with houseboats during the high season. Unless you’re staying multiple nights, don’t bring large, bulky luggage onboard.

Most houseboats feel like an Airbnb. Mine had a cozy living room, three bedrooms (each with their own attached bathroom), a communal sink, a kitchen, and an outdoor balcony.

Houseboats can only run from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. due to local river regulations.

Your meals will consist of veg and non-veg southern Indian food bought from local markets, such as rice, coconut, fresh seafood, chicken curry, vegetables, dal, payasam, dosas, chutneys, sambar, banana fry, fried bread, ginger chai, and toddy.

One of the best things to do is to explore the sites and towns along the waterways, like Karumadikuttan Temple in the village of Karumady and St. Mary’s Basilica in Champakulam.

You can get fresh seafood, bottled drinks, and basic toiletries at a canal-side market called Pothuval Fish Center & Dynamic Cool Bar, or you can try your hand at fishing yourself! If you want, you can leave it to the professionals.

A sunrise or sunset canoe ride is also a must. The colors in the sky make the backwaters even more beautiful, if that’s even possible! Take in the buildings along the waterways, including homes and churches.

If you visit the Kerala backwaters in the autumn, you can even watch a boat race that takes place on Meenappally Kayal Lake!

Renting a houseboat is an experience I urge everyone to have at least once. It will change your life forever.

Where have you been?

Kerala INDIAN FOOD on a Houseboat + Exploring the Backwaters | Alappuzha, India

Day three in Kerala continued that afternoon and evening as my friend and guide Ebbin and I continued exploring the stunning and world-famous Kerala Backwaters. Come along with us as we enjoy more Kerala Indian food on our houseboat and continue exploring the sites and wonders of the backwaters in Alappuzha, India!

Cruise Land Houseboat:
Ebbin:

My third afternoon in Kerala began on our houseboat along the beautiful backwaters in Alappuzha, India. Between the quiet, peaceful waters, the rice fields, and the palm trees, this place is even more gorgeous than it looks in photos.

Our first stop on the afternoon was St. Mary’s Basilica, which is about 1,500 years old. The church is very colorful and grand! At the far end are angels, and on the ceiling are paintings of Jesus Christ, Mary, angels, and more. There’s also a carving of the Last Supper. Outside is the oldest cross on the property. On its base is another, smaller cross and script written in Malayalam.

Then, we got back on the boat and headed to a market! Onboard were some snacks, including ginger chai, banana fry,m and fried bread. The banana tasted like a maduro, which is a fried plantain in Latin America. Then, I tried the fried bread, which was like French toast! I dipped my last bit of bread into the chai. The dough, cumin, and ginger together were unreal!

We arrived at a type of convenience store where there were coolers full of fish. They also had lots of freshwater crabs, tuna, snapper, tiger prawns, and kingfish. We bought some tiger prawns for dinner, and a toothbrush and toothpaste for me, as I had forgotten mine!

The sun was setting, so we had to hurry if we wanted to cast the nets out to see if we could catch some fish. The guy with the nets cast them into the water. We caught a few smaller fish, but we only got small ones.

We headed back to the boat. I couldn’t wait to eat and have some coconut wine, which is famous in Kerala. The coconut wine, called toddy, was super sour! It was very cloudy and has very little alcohol in it.
Then, we headed to the kitchen, where they had marinated our tiger prawns in ginger, garlic, garam masala, black pepper, and green chili paste. They would be fried in coconut oil! Ebbin fed me a spoonful of chutney, which was super spicy, flavorful, and crunchy. It also contained chilies, shallots, and coconut oil. It was hot and numbed my tongue!

Then, it was time to eat! We had a huge spread that included chapati, butter daal, prawns, pearl fish, rice soup, chili chutney, cassava, dried fish, vegetables, chicken, and more. I started with the chapati and daal. It was a light lentil puree and was light on the spices. It was so good!

Then, I jumped on a prawn. Ebbin told me to eat it with the shell on! I loved the masala on it, and the coconut oil was killer! The ginger, black pepper, garlic, and green chili were unbelievable. I also loved the crunch of the shell!

I also loved the numbing spice of the green chili chutney with chapati. The dried fish was crunchy and salty. I also tried potatoes with chilies and more diced cabbage salad, which was like Mayo-less coleslaw with a tingle! The chicken curry wasn’t too strong or spicy, but my favorite was the cassava with the green chili chutney, dried fish, and rice soup. There was also a delicious fried fish was a super flavorful skin.

Then, I got some chili chutney, added it to the rice soup, and mixed it up and tried some. That did the trick!

I hope you enjoyed coming with me to have Kerala Indian food on a houseboat! If you did, please give this video a thumbs up and leave a comment below. Also, please subscribe to my YouTube channel and click the notification bell so you don’t miss any of my travel/food adventures around the world!

Kerala Backwaters Houseboat Experience | Alleppey | Kerala Series | #Ep05 | Eng Subs

Hey guys, this video is all about exploring Kerala Backwaters (Alleppey) (#Ep05)of Kerala Series. In case you haven't seen my previous vlogs, the link is given below ????

#Ep01:
#Ep02:
#Ep03:
#Ep04:

The Kerala backwaters are the rather unappealing name given to the peaceful and picturesque palm-lined network of lagoons, lakes, rivers, and canals that run inland from the coast of Kerala, from Kochi (Cochin) to Kollam (Quilon) in India.

Traditionally, the backwaters are used by locals for transport, fishing, and agriculture.

The lush green landscape, diverse wildlife, and houses and villages that line the backwaters make a journey along these waterways seem like a journey through another world. No wonder the backwaters is one of the must-visit tourist places in Kerala.

Getting to Alleppey From Kochi:
Alleppey can easily be reached in just over two hours by prepaid taxi from Kochi or from Kochi airport. Expect to pay about 3,500 rupees. Uber and Ola app-based taxis are also available.

I chose to do a 4 hrs ride on a houseboat, but if you have time and a company you must do an overnight trip. For this 4 hrs trip, I paid Rs.4000 in which lunch was also included. Try to bargain as much as you can and maybe you'll end up with some good deal.

Hope you enjoy this vlog.

God’s Own Country | Backwaters - Kerala, India

#IndianFood #Kerala #Backwaters
