Top 10 Villages to Visit in China - Historic Towns and Countryside (Travel Video)

Welcome to China’s villages and historic towns. Often touted for its ever changing city skylines, China’s countryside shows a very different side of the country. From beautiful riverside villages to snow covered mountain towns. From mysterious tulou (earthen buildings) to awe-inspiring rice terraces. Traveling rural China can be an eye-opening experience.

I spent more than 18 months in China, spread over the course of a decade and a half. In the last years, I started filming the places that I traveled to, using regular cameras and drones. All footage in this travel video is shot by myself between 2010 and 2019.

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video:

We start off this journey in Yuanyang, a spectacular mountain region where you can find some of the world’s most jaw-dropping rice terraces. Staying with local families is a great way to explore the area, filled with breathtaking landscapes and friendly villages.

Xuexiang is located in the North of China, and is mostly known for its extreme Winter weather, with freezing temperatures and layers of snow. It’s a popular tourist attraction and beautiful sight. The ‘tulou’ buildings in Fujian province are the next destination. These structures were used by the local Hakka people as defense against rivaling communities and bandits. While many still function as homes, some are now used as restaurants and hotels for tourists.

Lijiang is one of China’s most beautiful historic towns, with classic architecture and narrow lanes that can be explored for days. Nearby Dali is worth a visit for its incredible Three Pagodas and Buddhist temple. We travel onwards to Xiahe, a tranquil town just outside Tibet proper. Join monks and pilgrims on traditional koras, and soke up Tibetan culture.

Yangshuo, on the banks of the Li River, might be one of China’s most famous villages, surrounded by mesmerizing limestone hills and mountains. It also provides a good insight into farming life in the country (you can rent bicycles and motorcycles for nice day trips). Shaoshan is a somewhat odd place. It’s the birthplace of Mao Zedong, regarded as the founder of the People’s Republic. The village is a popular stop on the ‘Red Tourism’ trail, a government propaganda campaign.

Fenghuang is a stunning ancient village in the same Hunan province, with incredible architecture, including stone bridges and towers, stilt houses, and a city wall. The next spot on my list is Zhujiajao a popular ‘water town’, not far from Shanghai.

We finish this tour in Pingyao, perhaps the best preserved walled town (or small city) in the country. It used to be an important center of trade and finance, and it’s fascinating to walk the quiet neighborhoods and intriguing alleyways.

Basha Miao Village in China | Best Village Videos

A video about a village in China called Miao. This a video about the daily life and the culture of the village. Feel free to caption the video. ENJOY!

Miao Minority Villages

This was a trip that included visits to the Qingman Miao Weaving Village and the Shiqiao Miao village in the the Maio and Dong Autonomous Prefecture in Southeastern Guizhou Province. At about 3:30 of the video is a funny exchange with a local weaver while negotiating for a piece of fabric.

Biaosha Miao Village

Biasha Miao Village is located in Congjiang County in the Southwestern Guizhou's Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture and the local residents still observe ancient Miao traditions.

Dehang Miao Village, China

Dehang is a Miao Village tucked into a river valley in China. Even the poor and dilapidated Miao villages along the way looked charming against the gorgeous scenery. There is a large contingent of Miao ethnic minority people settled in this particular area of Western Hunan with more living in the Provinces of Guizhou, Yunnan and Sichuan.

There is an entrance fee to Dehang and the people were eagerly awaiting what few tourists arrived. There was a small game concession, food being sold and several dances performed by unhappy looking Miao women. The Miao live very difficult and hard lives so who could blame them for a lack of enthusiasm.

Armed and Dangerous, Biasha Miao Village in Congjiang County

Lying on the southern border Guizhou, Basha village is famed for being China 's last tribe of gunmen. This primitive Miao village is hidden away in a forest and filled with stilted wooden houses by the river. Basha village, in the southeast corner of Guizhou in Congijiang County is home to over 1,000 residents living in more than 400 households. Their ancestors were frontline troops who charged through forests and fought the bears there -- all to guard the land where they lived. Through hundreds of years, they have been guarding their homeland. Still today the men in Basha preserve their musketeer heritage, which makes Basha the only tribe that can legally carry real guns in China. A strong sense of precaution inherited from their ancestors keeps this village isolated from the outside world. The villagers lead a self-sufficient life in the hilly areas and retain the dressing and living customs hundreds of years ago.

The villagers in Basha worship trees, especially maples, as gods. They believe the buns on their heads represent trees, while the purple clothes they wear represent bark. (The color is a special bluish purple. Biasha people usually add egg whites into the indigo when dying the coarse cloth, making it shiny and waterproof.) In Basha, a tree is planted whenever a baby is born. Often it will be cut down to make the coffin when the person eventually dies. Cutting down ancient trees is forbidden in the village.

Basha men are also famous for their unique hairstyles. Like the men in the Qing dynasty, Basha men wear their long hair in braids. They attach great importance to their hair bun, which they believe is a symbol of masculinity, as well as an emblem of power. This is a hairstyle that 's existed for thousands of years.

Young boys have to take part in a shaving ceremony between the ages of seven and fifteen. The tribe leader wets a sickle with the water used to boil eggs, and shaves off all of the boy's hair except for the central part, which is coiled into a bun. The blade caresses the scalp, and patches of hair fall to the ground. This shave is done without any shaving cream, or even a rinse. Boys get their first haircuts as a rite of passage, and then are given a hunting rifle at the age of 15 as a sign that they've become adults.
This Biasha Miao is quite different from other Miao groups in terms of clothing and daily life. Biasha people belong to the Miao branch that is least affected by modern civilization. Even in the modern times, they still lead very traditional lives.

The local villagers' ethnic costumes are made and dyed (mostly in deep blue biotic dyes, egg white and pig's blood) by themselves in the traditional way, with almost the same design pattern, usually diamonds and lines, and most have an eggplant color. Some Biasha people do not wear shoes, even in winter.

Men are often seen carrying a claymore (type of sword) in the waist and a hunting rifle over the shoulder, which remains a common ornament, though there are no longer many animals and birds to hunt.

Xijiang Miao Village — Fall in Love in the Beautiful Scenery

‪#‎XijiangMiaoVillage‬ wakes up in the morning to the smoke of home cooking. The light of dawn is naturally integrated with the cooking smoke. Through the eerie rising smoke, the largest Miao village in China, nestled in the depths of the mountains, becomes a mirage-like place of peace, and dynamic village life awakens and unfolds out of these natural landscapes.
