Deep in the forests of Cambodia’s Siem Reap province, an ancient stone city soars skyward. This is the sprawling complex of Angkor Archaeological Park. The site is located in the northwestern region of the country and is only four miles from the city of Siem Reap. The Khmer Empire’s various capitals thrived here from the 9th to 15th centuries, over an empire that stretched from Myanmar to Vietnam. Including forested areas and newly discovered “suburbs” Angkor covers more than 400 square miles—an area considerably larger than New York City’s five boroughs.

The massive Angkor Wat is the most famed of all Cambodia’s temples—it even appears on the nation’s flag. The 12th century “temple-mountain” was built as a spiritual home for the Hindu god Vishnu.

The temples of Angkor are architectural masterpieces laden with artistic treasures like the bas-relief galleries that tell enduring tales of Cambodian history and legend.

Angkor is as much about water as it is about stone—the site boasts an enormous system of artificial canals, dikes, and reservoirs. The West Baray reservoir is the largest of which at 5 miles long and 1.5 miles wide. These massive works skillfully harnessed river and rainwater to quench the thirst of some 750,000 residents in the world’s largest preindustrial city. That water also irrigated wealth-producing crops like rice, which served the Khmer as currency.

It’s still a mystery to scientists why the city’s rulers abandoned the site and resettled near the modern capital of Phenom Penh. Some scholars speculate that the downfall of this elaborate water system led to the end of Angkor.

The town of Siem Reap is the gateway to Angkor and is filled with lodging, dining, and tour-package options for all budgets. Those preferring to travel by boat can also make the trip from Phnom Penh in some five or six hours—about the same travel time as by road. The airport in Siem Reap has service to Phnom Penh and regular flights abroad to Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, and Laos. The airport in Siem Reap has service to the capital and regular flights to nearby countries.

Peak tourist season in Angkor is December and January, when rainfall is less likely and the climate is most kind. No matter the time of year, a visit to Angkor is sure to leave you awestruck.

The people of Cambodia are among the most resilient people on Earth. Having experienced years of tortuous war, poverty and horror, they remain courteous, friendly and welcoming.

You'll love the constant array of gentle and smiling faces and the best compliment to pay your hosts is to remain cool-tempered, calm and ready for some warm acquaintance, fun and even laughter.

1- Language

Cambodia's official language is Khmer, and this is spoken by the majority of the population. Even so, Vietnamese and several Chinese dialects can also be heard spoken here. Unlike the languages of Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and China, Khmer is non-tonal and has also picked up and adapted many words from Sanskrit and Pali. Khmer has also borrowed many terms from Chinese and European languages, particularly French.

The roots of written Khmer derive from a South Indian alphabet. It uses 33 consonants, 24 dependent vowels, 12 independent vowels, and diacritic markers. Vowels may be written before, after, over, or under a consonant symbol. About 50% of the Cambodian population is literate.

2 - Cambodia population and people

Cambodia's population stands at an estimated 12 million, of which the Khmer make up 90%. Other groups include Vietnamese, Chinese, Thai and Burmese and various ethnic hill tribes. Many of the hill tribes live in the mountainous regions to the north and southwest of the country.

The Khmer account for 80% of agricultural workers, while the Vietnamese and Chinese dominate the business sector.

3- Religion in Cambodia

The state religion of Theravada Buddhism was first introduced to Cambodia during the days of the great Angkor kingdom, and it prospered ever since. For centuries, monks were the only literate people residing in rural communities and filled the important role of teachers.

However, in 1975, the Khmer Rouge massacred the majority of them and destroyed most of their temples and it was not until after the Vietnamese invasion that Buddhism was once again openly practiced.

An Empire of Temples
==================
Contemporary Cambodia is the successor state to the mighty Khmer empire, which, during the Angkorian period, ruled much of what is now Laos, Thailand and Vietnam. The remains of this empire can be seen at the fabled temples of Angkor, monuments unrivaled in scale and grandeur in Southeast Asia. The traveler’s first glimpse of Angkor Wat, the ultimate expression of Khmer genius, is sublime and is matched by only a few select spots on earth, such as Machu Picchu or Petra.

The Urban Scene
==================
Just as Angkor is more than its wat, so too is Cambodia more than its temples, and its urban areas can surprise with their sophistication. Chaotic yet charismatic capital Phnom Penh is a revitalized city earning plaudits for its sumptuous riverside setting, cultural renaissance, and world-class wining-and-dining scene. Second city Siem Reap, with cosmopolitan cafes and a diverse nightlife, is as much a destination as the nearby iconic temples. And up-and-coming Battambang, reminiscent of Siem Reap before the advent of mass tourism, charms with a thriving contemporary art scene.

Upcountry Adventures
==================
Experience the rhythm of rural life and landscapes of dazzling rice paddies and swaying sugar palms in Cambodia's countryside. The South Coast is fringed by tropical islands dotted with the occasional fishing village. Inland lie the Cardamom Mountains, part of a vast tropical wilderness providing a home to elusive wildlife and a gateway to emerging ecotourism adventures. The mighty Mekong River cuts through the country and hosts some of the region’s last remaining freshwater dolphins. The northeast is a world unto itself, its mountainous landscapes home to Cambodia’s highland people and an abundance of natural attractions and wildlife.

The Cambodian People
==================
The Khmers have been to hell and back, struggling through years of bloodshed, poverty and political instability. But they are working hard to prevail, relying on their seemingly unbreakable spirit and an infectious optimism. No visitor comes away without a measure of admiration and affection for the inhabitants of this enigmatic kingdom.

Exploring Beautiful Cambodia In 2 Minutes | SEA

Part 3 of our trip, Cambodia!!! We first went to see the capital, and visited the Killing Fields, which gave us a horrific insight into the history of Cambodia. I never knew things like this happened there and I think it is important that a lot of people get to know about this in school. After that, we went to the Angkor Temples, which was absolutely amazing. You don't believe me? Well look for yourself :D

Must Try Khmer Food | Phnom Penh, CAMBODIA

This episode isn't for the faint-hearted. It's our first time visiting Cambodia and our first stop is Phnom Penh. We try everything from delicious fish amok to eating red ants and gigantic deep fried tarantulas. Yep! Tarantulas.

Cambodia has long been on our to travel bucket list and we kick things off by grabbing a traditional Cambodian breakfast and a staple Khmer dish Beef Lok Lak.

ភោជនីយដ្ឋាន ភ្នំពេញ ខេមរា (Phnom Penh Khemara Restaurant)
Address: Oknha lng Bun Hoaw Ave 108, Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Hours: Monday - Sunday 6am–6:30pm

If you've ever thought about eating tarantulas in Cambodia, what do tarantulas taste like or where can you eat tarantulas, well... you can find it as street food in Phnom Penh and around Cambodia but we found some at traditional Khmer cuisine restaurant while staying in Phnom Penh. This was definitely one of the most memorable dining experiences we've had to date!

Romdeng is a special Khmer restaurant that gives training to disadvantaged children and local street youth, providing them lifesaving support and an opportunity to learn and pick up essential skills. They serve traditional Cambodian cuisine and Khmer food (like fish amok) but you'll also find items on the menu for the more adventurous eater too. This is where Peter tries tarantulas and red ants for the first time!

At Romdeng you can find traditional local Cambodian food plus it's set in a colonial building surrounded by greenery and even has a swimming pool.

Romdeng
Address: # 74 Oknha Ket St. (174), Phnom Penh 12210, Cambodia
Hours: Monday - Sunday 11am–11pm

Next up, for a twist on classic dishes (like fish amok) we head over to a lush green eco friendly store known for being the first of its kind in Phnom Penh. They follow a strict zero-plastic policy in their mission to help Cambodia's sustainability movement to reduce and replace plastic waste.

Eleven One Kitchen
Address: 460 #37, Street 123 (Corner Street, Phnom Penh 12000, Cambodia
Hours: Monday - Sunday 7:00 AM - 9:30 PM

Lastly, we hit up a local Cambodian restaurant called Mok Mony for some incredible Khmer food like salt crusted whole fish and mouth watering grilled betel leaf beef skewers. Mok Mony specializes in authentic Khmer cuisine and it was absolutely delicious Cambodian food.

Mok Mony
Address: 63c, Street 294, BKK 1 រាជធានីភ្នំពេញ, 12302, Cambodia

Cambodia - Moja Kambodża

Cambodia 2015 Siem Reap 4k Episode 2 Nightlife

An evening and dinner in Siem Reap,

Siem Reap, Cambodia Angkor (One Day)

In this video Siem Reap Angkor In A Day I give you an account of how you can spend a day in the Angkor Archeological Park from sunrise at Angkor Wat to finishing off at the crown jewel of Angkor Thom, The Bayon. In between I fitted in some of my favorite spots including Ta Prohm, The Tomb Raider Temple. It's certainly a personal choice how you spend that day at this amazing site but I feel in order to make it a memorable and lasting experience you need to spend a good amount of time at the most significant temples and complexes if you want a memorable and lasting experience. If you're a trophy hunter and just out to get to as many places as you can with the thought that you may never be back that's certainly your choice and if you're comfortable with that type of experience then do it. This video is not about ticking off a long list but visiting some of the best sites in the park and making a connection with these places. That's what I value the most when I visit a place like the Angkor Archeological Park. I've been fortunate to have the time in the past to see most all of the complexes and temples in the park over a two week period. I know that most people that visit only have one day so I thought I would give myself the same boundaries and see what the experience is like when you only have one day. I can safely say that it can be a wonderful experience if you keep your list of places short and spend at least 1-2 hours at each site. I hope you enjoy the video and advice. If you'd like to contact my driver and friend Davin to book his tuk-tuk for the day you can contact here:phone or WhatsApp-85587703378

Cambodia has a rich and fascinating history.

In this video, we give you a brief overview of the history of Cambodia.

The first humans in Cambodia were Stone Age hunters and gatherers.
However, farming was introduced into Cambodia about 2,300 BC.

The first farmers in Cambodia used stone tools, but from about 1,500 BC the Cambodians used tools and weapons made from bronze.
By about 500 BC they had learned how to use iron.

The first civilization in the area arose about 150 A.D in the Mekong River delta in South Vietnam.
This civilization was known to the Chinese who called it Fu-nan.
While Fu-nan was trading with the Chinese, Cambodian society grew more sophisticated.
Settlements grew larger.
So did kingdoms.

By the beginning of the 7th century A.D, all of Cambodia was highly civilized.
At first Cambodia was divided into rival states, however, at the beginning of the 9th century a king named Jayavarman the 2nd founded the Khmer Empire in Cambodia.

THE KHMER EMPIRE IN CAMBODIA.
Like all early civilizations, the Khmer Empire was an overwhelmingly agricultural society.
Although there were many craftsmen, the great majority of the people were farmers.
Their staple diet was rice.
The Khmers were animists.
They believed that spirits inhabited natural phenomena, such as the earth and trees.
Later Indian religions (Hinduism and Buddhism) were introduced and they co-existed with traditional beliefs.
The rich and powerful built fine temples, (the only stone buildings in Cambodia).
They were richly decorated with fine stone carvings.
The most famous temple in Cambodia is Angkor Wat, which was built in the early 12th century.
Cambodia was prosperous and powerful.
Then about 1000 A.D, King Jayavarman the 5th was killed.
Civil war followed until Suryavarman the Ist founded another dynasty.
By 1011 he was in control of Cambodia, however his dynasty only lasted until 1080 when it was replaced by another.
In 1177 a people called the Chams from Champa (on the coast of Vietnam) invaded Cambodia.
However, King Jayavarman the 7th managed to drive them out by 1183, and between 1203 and 1220 he was able to force the Chams to submit to him.
Nevertheless, by the mid-13th century the Khmer kingdom was in decline.
In 1431 the Thai's captured the Cambodian capital, Angkor.
Afterwards it was abandoned, and new capital was founded at Phnom Pehn.
By the mid-16th century, Angkor was overgrown by the jungle and it was accidentally re-discovered by a Cambodian king.

CAMBODIA 1500-1800.
During the 16th century Cambodian power continued to decline.
At the end of the century, Cambodia fell under Thai control.
In 1594 the Thai's captured the capital and after that they dominated the region.
From the middle of the 17th century, the power of Vietnam grew.
In the early 17th century the Cambodians controlled parts of what is now South Vietnam.
They held a port called Prey Nokor, (Later it was renamed Saigon).
In the late 17th century Prey Nokor fell under Vietnamese rule.
During the 18th century, Cambodia found itself squeezed between two powerful neighbors, Thailand and Vietnam.
The Thai's invaded Cambodia several times in the 18th century and in 1772 they destroyed Phnom Pehn.

In the last years of the 18th century the Vietnamese also invaded Cambodia.
The Cambodian king was forced to look to the Thai's for protection.
In return Thailand took north-west Cambodia.
