Glacier Calving Denmark - Climate Change or Natural Event

INCREDIBLE COLLAPSE TRIGGERED BY GLACIER CALVING | South America, Chile

An incredibly large chunk of the Grey Glacier's ice-sheet breaks off and flips over in a spectacular way in Southern Patagonia, Chile. The ice-sheet of the Grey Glacier is currently declining due to increasing temperatures and changes in rainfall. It is part of the 'Southern Patagonian Ice Field', the world's 2nd largest contiguous extrapolar ice field and the largest freshwater reservoir in South America.

The Grey Glacier is famous for insane glacier wall collapses during the summer when large icebergs – often up to 100 feet in height – are breaking off the glacier and collapsing into the water of the 'Lago Grey'. In the right time of the year big blocks of ice break off the glacier and drop into the water. The waves created by such glacier calving events often splash dozens of meters through the air. The glacier itself is about 6 km (3.7 mi) wide and has an average height of over 30 m (100 ft) above the surface of the water.

Thankfully, no-one was injured as boats stay at a safe distance from the glacier (for a good reason).

Glacier calving, also known as ice calving, or iceberg calving, is the breaking of ice chunks from the edge of a glacier. The sudden release and breaking away of a mass of ice from a glacier or iceberg often causes large waves around the area and can result in a shooter which is a large chunk of the submerged portion of the iceberg surfacing above the water. The ice that breaks away can be classified as an iceberg, but may also be a growler, bergy bit, or a crevasse wall breakaway. The entry of the ice into the water causes large, and often hazardous waves. (Find out more here:

Giant +75 Meter Iceberg BREAKING OFF Glacier | Glacier Wall Collapse

Spectacular capture of a large iceberg breaking off the glacier 'Perito Moreno' in Argentina. Subscribe for more ►
In the right time of the year big blocks of ice break off the glacier and drop into the water. The waves created by such glacier calving events often splash dozens of meters through the air. The glacier is one of Argentina's most beautiful natural wonders, the colors and shapes of the ice remind of a piece of art of Gaudi. The glacier itself is about 5 km (3.1 mi) wide and has an average height of 74 m (240 ft) above the surface of the water. The ice field of the Glacier Perito Moreno is the world's third largest reserve of fresh water.

Despite that most of the innumerable glaciers worldwide are retreating as a result of global warming and climate change, one of the few unusual glaciers that maintains a state of equilibrium is the Perito Moreno glacier, because it continues to accumulate mass at a rate similar to that of its loss (

Icebergs are not just icebergs. They come in different sizes and shapes and origin from different sources. An iceberg was once part of a glacier, but it broke off, fell into the ocean and floated away. Icebergs are made of freshwater. They can have very irregular shapes, like mountains of ice, or they can be flat with steep sides, like a plateau of ice.

Ice calving, also known as glacier calving or iceberg calving, is the breaking of ice chunks from the edge of a glacier. It is a form of ice ablation or ice disruption and is normally caused by the glacier expanding. It is the sudden release and breaking away of a mass of ice from a glacier, iceberg, ice front, ice shelf, or crevasse.

The ice that breaks away can be classified as an iceberg, but may also be a growler, bergy bit, or a crevasse wall breakaway. Calving of glaciers is often accompanied by a loud cracking or booming sound before blocks of ice up to 60 metres (200 ft) high break loose and crash into the water. The entry of the ice into the water causes large, and often hazardous waves. The waves formed in locations like Johns Hopkins Glacier can be so large that boats cannot approach closer than 3 kilometres (1.9 mi).

These events have become major tourist attractions in locations such as Alaska. Many glaciers terminate at oceans or freshwater lakes which results naturally with the calving of large numbers of icebergs. Calving of Greenland's glaciers produce 12,000 to 15,000 icebergs each year alone. Calving of ice shelves is usually preceded by a rift. These events are not often observed.

11 Billion Tons of Ice Melted (TODAY IN GREENLAND)

IT'S REALLY HOT IN GREENLAND RIGHT NOW... Like 15 degrees Celsius or 60 Fahrenheit. THIS IS NOT NORMAL.

Today alone, Greenland's ice sheet (the second largest on earth) lost a record 11 billion tons, which rose global ocean levels half a millimeter.

It was bizarre to witness this first hand, as our Hurtigruten expedition explored the sea ice on small tender boats.

No region on earth is more affected more by climate change than the polar regions, and you don't realize how big the issue is until you see it with your own eyes. I made this video to raise awareness because it's up to us to fix it. I am speechless by what I saw today.

Please share your thoughts, comments and suggestions on climate change. I want to get some discussion going about what is happening right now on our lovely planet.

???????? Ilulissat Grønland. Isfjorden, UNESCO World Heritage Site

#Ilulissat #Icefjord april 2019

#UNESCO #WorldHeritageSite

Located on the west coast of #Greenland, 250 km north of the #ArcticCircle, Greenland’s Ilulissat Icefjord is the sea mouth of Sermeq Kujalleq, one of the few glaciers through which the Greenland ice cap reaches the sea. Sermeq Kujalleq is one of the fastest and most active glaciers in the world. It annually calves over 35 km3 of ice, i.e. 10% of the production of all Greenland calf ice and more than any other glacier outside Antarctica. Studied for over 250 years, it has helped to develop our understanding of climate change and icecap glaciology. The combination of a huge ice-sheet and the dramatic sounds of a fast-moving glacial ice-stream calving into a fjord covered by icebergs makes for a dramatic and awe-inspiring natural phenomenon.

Ilulissat Icefjord Timelapse - The Melting Point

The melting rate of Greenland's inland ice cap increases steadily, while the expansion of its fringes accelerates. This causes the glaciers to calve faster than previously and more icebergs are formed. This can be observed at the Ilulissat Icefjord which has become a symbol of the effect of the global warming.

Chunk of Glacier Calves Causing Huge Swell || ViralHog

Occurred on September 19, 2020 / LeConte Bay, Alaska, USA

We took a boat and jet ski from Petersburg Alaska to see LeConte Glacier. It was calving quite a bit. After about an hour of watching it and watching the icebergs flip over due to the waves, the front of the glacier began to crack and come down so beautifully. The most amazing show.
