We took the Glacier Express in First Class for FREE

This right here is the whole reason that we spent the extra money on our First Class Eurail pass - to be able to take this once-in-a-lifetime train - the Glacier Express. This legendary train ride goes over 8 hours from the incredible Zermatt to the underrated St. Moritz across some of the most breathtaking scenery imaginable. This is Switzerland at it's finest, and most comfortable.

The Glacier Express is usually not cheap - it costs ~$300 at any time of year, and it can be easy to think that it's not worth it. However, with the Eurail pass, the Glacier Express is included (with a mandatory seat reservation fee, you know how Eurail do) and we think it's an absolute must-do if you are in Switzerland and have a Eurail pass.

As far as if it's worth it if you're just buying the ticket yourself? Well, watch this and see for yourself... :)

Most beautiful luxury train journey in Switzerland - Glacier Express - Zermatt to St. Moritz

If you are a connoisseur of fine train experiences, you should have Glacier express on your list. The train connects Switzerland`s 2 most popular resort towns Zermatt and St.Moritz. Though the train ride is beautiful all year around, synonymous to its name I recommend taking the journey during the winter months to see beautiful Swiss snowscape.

In addition to the lovely views that you see via the train`s panoramic window, this journey is also steeped in history as the train passes through UNESCO featured bridges, tunnels that were built over a century ago.

Here is a link to where you can find price details for travel in Glacier express.

Yes, it can get expensive! Here is a hack for a bit more economical option - instead of buying the ticket for Glacier express, you can instead buy a day pass (1st or 2nd class) which can also be used in Glacier express in the respective class. And you will be required to make seat reservation at additional cost. This works out cheaper than the actual ticket price, especially if you have a half fare card and are able to plan and book your day pass in advance.
Seat reservation in Glacier express is a must.

Above suggested approach may not work for the Excellence class, as you will have to buy the regular Glacier express ticket for it.

Zermatt Switzerland – Best Things to do during Winter – Beautiful Alpine Panorama [Travel Guide]

Zermatt is the place to seek amazing panoramic views up in the Swiss Alps. One of the world's most famous peaks can be spotted in here: The iconic MATTERHORN. Zermatt is a very pretty village, in particular during winter, it's touristy, but for a good reason! There are a lot of things one can do up there! The probably most-known panorama you could get at the Gornergrat. You may get up there by taking a train that costs around 110.- CHF for return. Up there, you will get to see the Matterhorn from the side. Other very important things to see are the massive Gorner glacier, Dufourspitze (Monte Rosa) and the Kleinmatterhorn. A notably cheaper peak to visit - and my personal favorite panorama - would be the Rothorn. You would need to take an underground funicular, followed by 2 cabin rides. Up on the Rothorn, you get a brilliant frontal view over the Matterhorn; in my opinion the best view! Surely during Winter, the panorama up there looks stunning! Visit also the village of Zermatt. It charms with its many traditional wooden houses that are stereotypical for the canton of Valais / Wallis. There is a section at where you will get to see many of them, which is located at the Hinterdorfstrasse. This is a great place to take memorable photos. Also walk along the river Vispa, from there you get a nice bottom view over the Matterhorn, beautiful to take photos with the village in the foreground. The main road called Bahnhofstrasse is the touristy centre of Zermatt. It can be crowded but it sort of feels lovely! There are many restaurants at where you can dine at. The village is in particular nice during the sunset and dusk. During December/January/February/March, the village transforms into a perfect Winter Wonderland during the night! Also visit the Kleinmatterhorn, the highest alpine station you could visit in the Swiss Alps and even in Europe! The Kleinmatterhorn is located on 3890m above sea level. Thus, it is already very high up! You will feel the thin air, but somehow it's also quite exciting! Visit the ice palace (Matterhorn Glacier Paradise), which is a manmade cave inside the glacier. There, you can see many carved ice figures.

Glacier Express in Winter Snow: From Zermatt to St Moritz (Interrail/Eurail)

Switzerland's famous Glacier Express in Winter Snow. Travelling from Zermatt to St Moritz by train on the Interrail Pass / Eurail Pass. Full details/itinerary here:
We travelled in early January following a stay in the town of Zermatt (next to the famous Matterhorn mountain) when the small station town is still covered in snow and decorated for Christmas. Note, this was part of a wider Interrail/Eurail journey outlined fully here:

The Glacier Express railway train then follows from Zermatt (08:00AM start for us) through many small mountain stations, including Visp, before crossing the snowy mountains of the Alps.
Early attractions include the Oberalppass, which is the highest point of the journey, as well as the Rhine Gorge where the Rhine River passes in the Swiss Alps. Before reaching the next main station at Chur (pronounced Coor). And this is an optional end to the Glacier Express.

However, the best-known attraction is the Landwasser Viaduct, found along the train line between Chur and St Gallen, and it takes roughly 2 hours between these two stations of the railway line.

The Glacier Express takes 8 hours in total from Zermatt to St Moritz (Switzerland) on what is known as the 'World's Slowest Fast Train' where it is a high-speed train, only, given the terrain, it is the world's slowest when going from point A to point B.

The wild ride - GLACIER EXPRESS

---

Switzerland has some of the most scenic train rides in the world. Crossing forests, tunnels and bridges across the Alps, the Glacier Express is a dream for a lot of people. The magic of this train takes another dimension in winter when all the mountains are covered of fresh snow.

*Disclaimer :
- This video is NOT an advertisement.
- Due to tight schedule in winter, the train shown in the video is not the actual Glacier Express but rides the same tracks.

The Glacier Express is a train which connects the two major mountain resorts of St. Moritz and Zermatt in the Swiss Alps.

It is not an express in the sense of being a high-speed train but rather in the sense that it provides a one-seat ride for a long duration travel. In fact it has the reputation of being the slowest express train in the world.

It takes 7,5 hours to journey across 291 bridges, through 91 tunnels and across the Oberalp Pass on the highest point at 2,033 m (6,670 ft) in altitude. The entire line is metre gauge (narrow gauge railway).

The Glacier Express is run jointly by two private Swiss railways, the Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn (MGB) and the Rhätische Bahn (RhB), who also operate the regular local trains and freight trains over the same route.

Winter Rail Travel in Europe: 7 Day Interrail / Eurail Pass

This Winter Rail Journey on the 7-day Interrail Pass (myself) and Eurail Pass (Fanfan) was in early January 2019 during snowy conditions in Europe. Full itinerary here:

Day 1: Berlin to Heidelberg (Germany) – 2 nights
Day 2: Heidelberg to Bern (Switzerland)
Day 3: Bern to Zermatt (Switzerland) – 2 nights
Day 4: Zermatt to Saint Gallen (Switzerland)
Day 5: Saint Gallen to Munich (Germany)
Day 6: Munich to Prague (Czech Republic) – 2 nights
Day 7: Prague to Berlin (Germany)

Winter is always the preferred condition and time of travel for us, when there are less tourists travelling in Europe, reservations are not really necessary for trains, and the scenery is just unbeatable.

The trip was also inspired by the Glacier Express in Switzerland, but Switzerland is also where you get the real value for money on the Interrail/Eurail Pass. Otherwise we did start out in Germany, with cheap flights to Berlin Germany, as it is a convenient destination and starting point for exploring the eastern and northern part of Europe.

We then hop between trains through Germany and Switzerland, taking as well a quick rail journey out to Prague in the Czech Republic, before a return journey to our starting point again in Berlin. For return flights.

There will be a full and rather comprehensive blog is to come, but, for now, here is a quick round-up of the 7 days of travel which we were given on a 1-month Interrail Pass / Eurail Pass. Although, in total, it took 12 days given extended stays in destinations like Zermatt and Prague.
