Incredible GLACIER CALVING & TSUNAMI WAVE Caught On Camera! | Glacier Wall Collapse (Greenland)

Huge Icebergs collapsing and breaking from the Ilulissat Glacier are often up to 3,000 feet in height (1,000 meter) and are broken up by the force of the glacier and icebergs further up the fjord. Subscribe for more ►

Greenland is home to the only permanent ice sheet outside Antarctica. The sheet covers 3/4 of Greenland's land mass. The Ilulissat Icefjord drains 6.5% of the Greenland ice sheet and produces around 10% of all Greenland icebergs. Some 35 billion tonnes of icebergs calve off and pass out of the fjord every year (Find out more here: In the last 25 years, the Greenland Ice Sheet is rapidly melting, having lost 3.8 trillion tons of ice between 1992 and 2018, a new study from NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) finds. The melting ice has added 0.4 inches (11 millimeters) to sea level rise. Its cumulative 3.8 trillion tons of melted ice is equivalent to adding the water from 120 million Olympic-size swimming pools to the ocean every year (Find out more here:

Ice calving, also known as glacier calving or iceberg calving, is the breaking of ice chunks from the edge of a glacier. It is the sudden release and breaking away of a mass of ice from a glacier, iceberg, ice front, ice shelf, or crevasse. The ice that breaks away can be classified as an iceberg, but may also be a growler, bergy bit, or a crevasse wall breakaway. The entry of the ice into the water causes large, and often hazardous waves. The waves formed in locations like Johns Hopkins Glacier can be so large that boats cannot approach closer than 3 kilometres. These events have become major tourist attractions. Many glaciers terminate at oceans or freshwater lakes which results naturally with the calving of large numbers of icebergs. Calving of Greenland's glaciers produce 12,000 to 15,000 icebergs each year alone (Find out more here:

About this video: Incredible glacier calving & tsunami wave caught on camera (Bo B.)
This video is showing huge icebergs flipping over and subsequently a series of multiple iceberg and glacier wall collapses. Due to the enormous amount of ice falling into the water, the glacier calving event even triggered a series of mini-tsunami waves up to 16 feet in height (5 m) breaking on the shore.

We almost DIED in Spencer Glacier calving - Alaska 2019

My buddy Josh (@steeringsouth) and I rode the Alaska Railroad out to Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop and tent camped over night at Spencer Glacier. We went kayaking in the glacier bay in our Intex K2 Explorer kayaks and witnessed a MASSIVE event as a chunk of a glacier calved about 50 foot from us and created a 10-12 foot wave. We were pelted with chunks of flying ice and buckets of water. To say we are lucky to be alive is an understatement. It was an absolutely stunning phenomenon to witness (and survive) . We learned our lesson and will give glaciers the space they deserve next time we are out exploring. Footage captured using GoPro Hero 7 Black.

Calving of glaciers is often accompanied by a loud cracking or booming sound before blocks of ice up to 60 metres (200 ft) high break loose and crash into the water. The entry of the ice into the water causes large, and often hazardous waves. The waves formed in locations like Johns Hopkins Glacier can be so large that boats cannot approach closer than 3 kilometres (1.9 mi). These events have become major tourist attractions in locations such as Alaska.

Many glaciers terminate at oceans or freshwater lakes which results naturally with the calving of large numbers of icebergs. Calving of Greenland's glaciers produce 12,000 to 15,000 icebergs each year alone.

Calving of ice shelves is usually preceded by a rift. These events are not often observed.

Iceberg tsunami gone wild!

A tourist from Australia came to my uncle and asked if she could get a ride to the glacier just north of Ilulissat, Greenland, so he asked me if I wanted to be his translator. I am from another town where glaciers are fairytales, I was as much of a tourist as the Australian tourist, so I decided to join the crew.

The beautiful scenery was amazing, but the nature doesn't care about anyone. That day almost became our last day.

Large Iceberg Breaking near Ilulissat

Iceberg breaking up in the Ilulissat icefjord, close to an archaeological site called Sermermiut.

**A quick note - some of the external links to this video have mixed information. To be more precise, this is a large iceberg breaking up, which had already calved from the icecap. The large ones often collect at the end of the fjord, where it is a bit shallower. The NASA image at the end of the video shows this a bit more clearly**

Massive Ice Calving at Aialik Glacier - Alaska May 2022

The Aialik Glacier is a glacier in Kenai Fjords National Park. About 15 miles from Seward, it is the largest glacier in Aialik Bay and drains the Harding Icefield. The Harding Icefield, the largest icefield contained entirely within the United States, is over 1,100 square miles and spawns some 40 glaciers. Aialik glacier is generally very stable and such massive calving events are rare. Most calving of the Aialik glacier occurs in May and June.

Glacier Calving: Mountain Of Ice Collapses Near Polar Bears

A huge iceberg is breaking off a melting glacier in Svalbard, Norway while a polar bear mommy and her cub are playing in the snow right in front of it. The Svalbard glaciers cover 6% of the worldwide glacier area outside of Greenland and Antarctica, and many of them have been melting rapidly since the 1980s due to global warming. It is estimated that they could raise the sea level by 1,7 cm once melted completely.

Glacier calving, also known as ice calving, or iceberg calving, is the breaking of ice chunks from the edge of a glacier. It is the sudden release and breaking away of a mass of ice from a glacier, iceberg, ice front, ice shelf, or crevasse. (Find out more here:

Glacier Collapse. Iceberg Flip. Giant Wave.

This incident happened when tourists were shown around the glaciers. There was a break in the glacier, but the glacier did not immediately fall apart and collapsed into the water, but floated up vertically. After that, the iceberg collapsed, and it began to roll over. A giant wave formed like a tsunami. The boats urgently left the place of the walk. No harm done. These shots are very rare. I think it's all about global warming.

Glacier Calving | Amazing Collapses, Tsunami Waves and Icebergs
A glacier is a persistent body of dense ice that is constantly moving under its own weight. A glacier forms where the accumulation of snow exceeds its ablation over many years, often centuries. Glaciers slowly deform and flow under stresses induced by their weight, creating crevasses, seracs, and other distinguishing features. They also abrade rock and debris from their substrate to create landforms such as cirques, moraines, or fjords. Glaciers form only on land and are distinct from the much thinner sea ice and lake ice that forms on the surface of bodies of water On Earth, 99% of glacial ice is contained within vast ice sheets (also known as continental glaciers) in the polar regions, but glaciers may be found in mountain ranges on every continent other than the Australian mainland, including Oceania's high-latitude oceanic island countries such as New Zealand. Between latitudes 35°N and 35°S, glaciers occur only in the Himalayas, Andes, and a few high mountains in East Africa, Mexico, New Guinea and on Zard Kuh in Iran. With more than 7,000 known glaciers, Pakistan has more glacial ice than any other country outside the polar regions. Glaciers cover about 10% of Earth's land surface. Continental glaciers cover nearly 13 million km2 (5 million sq mi) or about 98% of Antarctica's 13.2 million km2 5.1 million sq mi), with an average thickness of 2,100 m (7,000 ft). Greenland and Patagonia also have huge expanses of continental glaciers. The volume of glaciers, not including the ice sheets of Antarctica and Greenland, has been estimated at 170,000 km3.
Glacial ice is the largest reservoir of fresh water on Earth, holding with ice sheets about 69 percent of the world's freshwater.[6][7] Many glaciers from temperate, alpine and seasonal polar climates store water as ice during the colder seasons and release it later in the form of meltwater as warmer summer temperatures cause the glacier to melt, creating a water source that is especially important for plants, animals and human uses when other sources may be scant. However, within high-altitude and Antarctic environments, the seasonal temperature difference is often not sufficient to release meltwater.

Since glacial mass is affected by long-term climatic changes, e.g., precipitation, mean temperature, and cloud cover, glacial mass changes are considered among the most sensitive indicators of climate change and are a major source of variations in sea level.A large piece of compressed ice, or a glacier, appears blue, as large quantities of water appear blue. This is because water molecules absorb other colors more efficiently than blue. The other reason for the blue color of glaciers is the lack of air bubbles. Air bubbles, which give a white color to ice, are squeezed out by pressure increasing the created ice's density.
