Hey guys,
it´s time for the next and last video in 2021. This time passing overhead the straits of Gibraltar. This is a narrow strait that connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea and seperates the european continent from Africa. On the northern side of the Strait are Spain and Gibraltar (a British overseas territory), while on the southern side are Morocco and Ceuta (Spain). The minimum width is only 13 km while the deepest point is 900 meters.

Acrobatic Royal Air Force C-17 Landing into Gibraltar Airport
Gibraltar airport, or RAF Gibraltar is a small and challenging airfield in the very small British overseas territory of Gibraltar. It's home to the RAF and sees multiple visits of various aircraft, ranging from the C-17 to the A400M and C130, normally based at RAF Brize Norton in the UK.
On our recent trip, this particular C-17, ZZ176, came in from RAF Brize Norton on Wednesday 13th October 2021. Its routing around the rock of Gibraltar gave this incredible view of the arrival from our vantage point near the siege tunnels up on the northern face of the rock.

We took off facing west before turning left to go south and fly around the rock giving some unbelievable views and some you don't get to see unless in an aircraft.

Gibraltar Airport Plane Spotting - The Runway With A Road Across It
One of the most picturesque airports in the world, with one of the most challenging arrival flight paths, around the rock of Gibraltar, makes this airfield a must visit.
The spot that features in the video is from the northern face of the rock, looking down on the airfield, which is actually an RAF base and is used by the RAF for troop deployment, training and other things.

Plane Spotting at Dangerous Airport Gibraltar - May 2022
Gibraltar is a British overseas territory situated on the southern tip of the Iberian peninsula. It's only a few square miles but has its own airport. Gibraltar is famous for its rock, which towers over the southern side of the airport and creates weather patterns that can make it hard for pilots to land the aircraft, making it one of the most dangerous approaches in Europe.

Royal Air Force A400 & C-17 Powerful Take Offs From Gibraltar
Gibraltar has an unusual airfield, given its used by both civilian and military aircraft. Its an RAF base, aptly named RAF Gibraltar, and is frequented by A400m's, C-17's and occasionally the C-130. On our trip, we managed to see the A440m and the C-17.
The C-17 clip was filmed from the harbour front, just at the start of RWY 09 and the A400m clips were filmed from a vantage point on the northern face of the rock of Gibraltar.

Things don't go to plan on my short visit to Gibraltar...
Landing at Gibraltar Airport has long been on my list and today it finally happens! I also had a nice wee hiking trail planned for my short time here, but as you'll see, that idea gets smashed by The Rock. These things happen and it's my own fault for allocating zero time here, but come and watch me suffer anyway :)
If you are planning a trip to Gibraltar, I'd highly recommend it, such a cool, unique place to visit, and SO much more to see than what I had the chance to show you today. My whole visit was planned around walking the Mediterranean Steps, and I had just about enough time to do that and no more, so when things went a bit awry, I ran out of time pretty quickly! But the history, monkeys, caves, suspension bridge, beautiful beach with Saharan sand, views, architecture, mix of cultures, there really is a lot to love about this place, so if you learn anything from this video, make it to stay here a bit longer than I did! (and to book your accommodation well in advance or like me you might have to retreat across the border to find affordable lodgings).

Gibraltar is one of the most notorious airports in the world! Famous as being the airport with a road that crosses the runway. As well as that it’s location and proximity to the Rock of Gibraltar can create some challenging winds for aircraft. So there’s several challenges faced by pilots flying to GIB.
