The Great Siege Tunnels of Gibraltar - 28th July, 2010

Views within and from Gibraltar's Great Siege Tunnels, known as the Galleries or the Great Siege Tunnels. The first of these was dug towards the end of the four years' siege which lasted from 1779-1783. General Elliot, afterwards Lord Heathfield, who commanded the garrison throughout the siege, was anxious to bring flanking fire on the Spanish batteries in the plain below the North face of the Rock. On the suggestion of Sergeant Ince of the Royal Engineers, he had a tunnel bored from a point above Willis's Battery to communicate with the Notch, a natural projection from the North face. The plan was to mount a battery there. There was no intention at first of making embrasures in this tunnel, but an opening was found necessary for ventilation; as soon as it had been made a gun was mounted in it. By the end of the siege, the British had constructed six such embrasures, and mounted four guns. The Galleries, which tourists may visit, were a later development of the same idea and were finished in 1797. They consist of a whole system of halls, embrasures, and passages, of a total length of nearly 304 m (997 ft). From them, one may see a series of unique views of the Bay of Gibraltar, the isthmus, and Spain.

Gibraltar - St. Michael's cave | Pillars of Hercules | Skywalk | Great Siege Tunnels | Monkeys

In today's video, we look at Rock of Gibraltar. We crossed the Gibraltar-Spain boundary on foot. After that, we met some guy with van that sold us a round trip around Gibraltar for 20 pounds. Really nice price when I imagine the price of cable car and individual prices of entrence fees to the caves / tunnels. As you can see in the video, the guy took us to the St. Michael's cave, Pillars of Hercules, Gibraltar Skywalk and Great Siege Tunnels. In the end, we took several photos with monkeys and he drove back to the boundary. So, enjoy the video!

Gibraltar | The Great Siege Tunnels, St Michael’s Cave, Grand Casemates Square & cheeky Monkeys ????????

Between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, located on the southernmost tip of the Iberian peninsula right next to Spain, and known as “the Rock” we find Gibraltar. For centuries it has belonged to the United Kingdom, which has expanded its area of control. But Spain has tried to recover the territory in different ways.

The locals are called llanitos and speak a mixture of English and Spanish. Gibraltar Airport is listed as one of the most dangerous airports in the World; with the 4-lane Winston Churchill avenue where cars cross at the same level as planes and its 1777m long runway. In addition, a few meters away is the stadium where the national soccer team acts as a local.

The monkey (Barbary macaques) population in Gibraltar keeps increasing. They live in the Upper Rock area of the Gibraltar Nature Reserve, and supposedly they sometimes make forays into the town. They've lived on the island for hundreds of years, and have become part of their history.

You can also see The Rock of Gibraltar, The Great Siege Tunnels, St Michael’s Cave, Grand Casemates Square, The Old Town and of course the cheeky monkeys :-)

Peachy's Place: Great Siege Tunnels

The Great Siege of Gibraltar was an unsuccessful attempt by joint French and Spanish forces to capture Gibraltar from the British during the time of the American War of Independence. The great siege lasted for three years and seven months, it is the longest siege ever endured by the British Armed Forces. Their success is no small part due to the defensive capability of The Rock and the engineers who over came all the challenges they faced in turning a lime stone mountain into an impenetrable fortress.
