WHICH TRAIN IS BEST? DUTCH OR GERMAN?
After Swiss and Lufthansa, we are now comparing NS (Nederlandse Spoorwegen) and DB (Deutsche Bahn). They are main train operators in The Netherlands and Germany, respectively. Take a look at our way to make the trip more fun :D Anyway, this is completely our subjective impression after taking the train for more or less 12 hours journey return. Holland, Netherlands, Dutch, Deutsch. What's the difference? - Holland Holiday
What is the difference between Holland and The Netherlands and between Dutch and Deutsch?
All over the world our country is wellknown as Holland.
In fact this is not correct.
We show you the map of The Netherlands. Two provinces in the west are called Holland, divided in North and South Holland. But our country has more provinces. A total of twelve. Al together they are called ‘The Netherlands’. So the official name is The Netherlands.
It means The Low Countries. The name refers to the fact that half our country is below sea level.
Even more confusing is the fact that the people in The Netherlands are called ‘The Dutch’. When a foreigner asks for our nationality we have to answer ‘Dutch’. Generally the reaction is: ah ‘Deutsch’.
No Dutch, from Holland we make clear.
When you are Deutsch you are a German.
When you are Dutch you are from The Netherlands (or Holland if you like).

Crossing the border from Netherlands to Germany in Corona time
Crossing the country border of The Netherlands into Germany during this corona crisis. This was Sunday 5 April 2020. I expected some sort of police activity at the border, from both countries, to check for who for what is going across. But nothing. No Douane, smooth sailing, right across the border. As a matter of a fact, it’s hard to see your in Germany at first, no Nice welcome sign nor “willkommen in Deutschland” - That is bad marketing, really! Anyway.
I had to drive my mother-in-laws car, from her garage, for at east 150 KM straight. (To clean the filter that regulates the engine) That led me right to the German border! So was curious if it was even open, or if there would be police or even military. Anyway, later a video on Elten, Germany (North Rhine-Westphalia) - that is the border town by Beek NL and looks very nice.
