About Nouakchott: Nouakchott (/nwækˈʃɒt, nwɑː-/; French: nwakʃɔt; Arabic: نواكشوط; Berber: Nwakcoṭ, originally derived from Berber: Nawākšūṭ, place of the winds) is the capital and largest city of Mauritania. It is one of the largest cities in the Sahel. The city also serves as the administrative and economic center of Mauritania. Nouakchott was a mid-sized village of little importance until 1958 when it was chosen as the capital of the nascent nation of Mauritania. At the time, it was designed and built to accommodate 15,000 people. However, beginning in the 1970s, a vast number of Mauritanians began moving to Nouakchott because environmental conditions in their home villages had become too harsh due to drought and increasing desertification. As of 2013, the city had a population of just under a million people. Many of the newcomers settled in slum areas of the city that were poorly maintained and extremely overcrowded. However, more recently, the living conditions of some of these inhabitants have improved. The city is the hub of the Mauritanian economy. It is home to a deepwater port and Nouakchott–Oumtounsy International Airport, one of the countrys two international airports. It also hosts the University of Nouakchott and several other more specialized institutions of higher learning. // Mauritania, officially the Islamic Republic of Mauritania (Arabic: الجمهورية الإسلامية الموريتانية), is a sovereign country in Northwest Africa. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Western Sahara to the north and northwest, Algeria to the northeast, Mali to the east and southeast, and Senegal to the southwest. Mauritania is the 11th-largest country in Africa and the 28th-largest in the world, and 90% of its territory is situated in the Sahara. Most of its population of 4.4 million lives in the temperate south of the country, with roughly one-third concentrated in the capital and largest city, Nouakchott, located on the Atlantic coast. While I constantly try to find the positives in every place I visit, there are a few nations that I just simply didn't enjoy.

The country of BRUNEI is one of them.

I went to Brunei back in 2014, three years before I made videos, but my negative experiences in the country have stuck in my mind ever since. That, combined with its absurd human rights laws such as stoning to death LGBT members, I felt like this video needed to be shared with the world.

Have you ever visited any countries that you didn't enjoy? Please share below, I'm curious to know.

map of Mauritania Africa

Mauritania ; Arabic: موريتانيا, Mūrītānyā, French: Mauritanie; Berber: Agawej or Cengit; Pulaar: ???????????????????????????????? Moritani; Wolof: Gànnaar; Soninke: Murutaane), officially the Islamic Republic of Mauritania (Arabic: الجمهورية الإسلامية الموريتانية), is a sovereign state in Northwest Africa. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Western Sahara to the north and northwest, Algeria to the northeast, Mali to the east and southeast, and Senegal to the southwest. Mauritania is the eleventh largest country in Africa, and 90 percent of its territory is situated in the Sahara. Most of its population of 4.4 million lives in the temperate south of the country, with roughly one third concentrated in the capital and largest city, Nouakchott, located on the Atlantic coast.

The country's name derives from the ancient Berber kingdom of Mauretania, located in present-day Morocco and Algeria. Berbers occupied what is now Mauritania beginning in the third century AD. Arabs conquered the area in the eighth century, bringing Islam, Arab culture, and the Arabic language. In the early 20th century, Mauritania was colonized by France as part of French West Africa. It achieved independence in 1960, but has since experienced recurrent coups and periods of military dictatorship. The most recent coup, in 2008, was led by General Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, who won subsequent presidential elections in 2009 and 2014. He was succeeded by Mohamed Ould Ghazouani following the 2019 elections, which were considered Mauritania's first peaceful transition of power since independence.

Mauritania is culturally and politically part of the Arab world: it is a member of the Arab League and Arabic is the sole official language. Reflecting its colonial heritage, French is widely spoken and serves as a lingua franca. The official religion is Islam, and almost all inhabitants are Sunni Muslims. Despite its prevailing Arab identity, Mauritanian society is multiethnic: the Bidhan, or so-called white moors, make up 30 percent of the population, while the Haratin, or so-called black moors, comprise 40 percent. Both groups reflect a fusion of Arab-Berber ethnicity, language, and culture. The remaining 30 percent of the population is made up of various sub-Saharan ethnic groups.

Despite an abundance of natural resources, including iron ore and petroleum, Mauritania remains poor; its economy is based primarily on agriculture, livestock, and fishing. Mauritania is known for its poor human rights record, most notably the continued practice of slavery, a result of a historical caste system between the Bidhan and Haratin. It was the last country in the world to abolish slavery, in 1981 and criminalized it only in 2007. Control is tightly concentrated in the executive branch of the central government, but a series of national and municipal elections since 1992 have produced limited decentralization. These regions are subdivided into 44 departments (moughataa). The regions and capital district (in alphabetical order) and their capitals are:

Eating on the Floor with NO FORKS!! (Mauritania)

THE FOOD IN MAURITANIA IS SO GOOD!

I was lucky enough to be invited into a local home for a traditional lunch today. Little did I know they dine while sitting on the floor and eat with their hands (no spoons, forks or knives). I cannot decide which I enjoyed more -- the taste of the food or the entire experience in itself. Let's just say both!

They dressed me in a boubou - a long, white, loose-fitting traditional garment that is typically worn every day by men. All I can say is that life is great out here in the Sahara desert!

Music: Epidemic Sound

P.S. Do you want me to do more food videos? To be honest, I prefer cultural/people videos over food, but if this gets good feedback then I will sprinkle these in more often!

Discover MAURITANIA: Where FAT Is BEAUTIFUL | 10 Interesting Facts You DO NOT KNOW about Mauritania

At midnight on November 28, 1960, under a tent in Nouakchott, to which the capital was recently moved, the chosen president announces the independence of Mauritania from French colonialism in the presence of foreign press delegations and a number of French and African personalities. Since then, Mauritania is considered a link between the Arab and African worlds.

The word “Mauritania” was not used to refer to the geographical area currently known as “Mauritania.” As for the original name, it was “الشنقيط بالد/Bilad alshanqit” (In English: The land of alshanqit) and the inhabitants were called “الشناقطة /alshanaqita”, but France named the country “Mauritania” when it colonized it at the beginning of the last century.
I forgot to tell you why the words are in Arabic because the official language of the country is Arabic

The Mauritanian constitution stipulates the existence of four national languages, the first of which is Arabic (the official language of the country), along with the “Pularian” language, the “Millennium” language, and the “Sononic” language (African languages), but there is a fifth language that is not provided for in the constitution, which is the “Zanak” language (the Berber language), and this language is almost disappearing from the country.

The Parc National du Banc D’arguin, a UNESCO world heritage site. It is one of the largest bird sanctuaries and very popular amongst bird lovers all across the world. You can spot many migratory birds in the reserve. You can go birdwatching there. The Park comprises sand-dunes, coastal swamps, small islands, and shallow coastal waters. The contrast between the harsh desert

environment and the biodiversity of the marine zone has resulted in a land- and seascape of outstanding natural significance. A wide variety of migrating birds spends the winter there. Several species of sea turtle and dolphin, used by the fishermen to attract shoals of fish, can also be found.
9- “The Richat Structure”, an eye staring at you from space! It is a huge eye in the Mauritanian desert which is visible from space, and it ranks as one of the most incredible geological marvels of our world. Just imagine looking down on Earth from space and an eye is staring back at you. It is known that the diameter of this eye is around 40 km and it looks like a ‘bull’s eye’.

The exact reason for its creation is still unknown as while competing theories concerning its origins exist, the debate still rages among some scientists. Nature seems reluctant to yield its mysteries to mankind. Some evidence indicates that this astonishing Eye of the Sahara represents the remnants of a geologic dome that formed approximately 100 million years ago.

“Bay of Nouadhibou”, “The Graveyard of ships” The place where there are rusting hulks in every direction, and ships that were cheaper to illegally abandon in this harbor than to correctly dismantle.

The city of Nouadhibou is the second-largest city in Mauritania and serves as the country's commercial center. It is famous for being the location of one of the largest ship graveyards in the world. Hundreds of rusting ships can be seen all around, in the water, and on beaches.
Various historical records cite that the port city became a vessel graveyard during the late 20th century. However, the idea of using the peninsula as a ship graveyard predates back to the days of the
country’s French colonization during the 20s and peaked to substantial heights during the 80s.

In the past, there were several currencies circulating inside Mauritania. The Ouguiya is the only Arabic word among all the monetary conventions in Mauritania. All of the other terms are of European origin, so this authentic Arabic word was chosen as a name for the Mauritanian national currency.

You will learn in Mauritania to give more value and attention to the number five. Mauritania is one of only two countries in the world to not use a decimal currency! The other is Madagascar. The Ouguiya
is the currency of Mauritania. Each ouguiya constitutes five Khoums.
6- As a Mauritanian kid, we can expect now that you should now have a rooster’s farm dependent on the number of teeth you've replaced so far.
In Mauritania, when a child loses a tooth, their parents tell them to wrap up their tooth in a small piece of cloth and throw it as hard as they can onto the roof of their house. If they get up very early the next morning, they will find a rooster on the roof, and they can keep it. If they don't wake up early enough, they won't find the rooster.

Mauritania 6 Days Desert Tour PART 1

Watch Part 2 here:

This trip was from around August of 2019. It took us a while to post because we started a family and then came the pandemic and all that. We are now just posting this as a wonderful memory we can refer to, and hopefully give other travelers an idea of what to expect when they go on a desert trip in Mauritania like we did. We started in Nouakchott, White Valley, Terjit Oasis and part 2 covers Chinguetti, Ouadane Ruins, and Atar. We have used Desert Mauritanie for this tour.

The trip has been very challenging for us because of the heat. But looking back, it's definitely one of those tours that you recall the most because it's out of the ordinary. Erika was unknowingly pregnant during this trip, which made the heat more unbearable for her, and even memorable for the both of us :)

We highly recommend that you visit Mauritania if you fancy a basic but adventurous trip. It's definitely not for those who can't survive a night without a proper toilet or if you're very picky on meals. Make sure not to go during summer so you can enjoy it more unlike us, where we ended up taking refuge from the sun for 4-5hrs a day, doing nothing.

Otherwise, it was a very nice experience to meet the locals, the nomads, and get to know the Mauritanian culture.

Mauritania’s Railway Journey Through the Sahara | WIDE | FULL DOCUMENTARY

Mauritania is a Sahelian country that, after fighting terrorism, is returning to life. One of its proudest achievements is the iron train, which transports iron ore to the Atlantic. A source of income for the entire country, 90% of which is desert and has been independent since 1960. For writer Olivier Weber, travelling on these wagons is a way of meeting desert workers and shopkeepers back in their villages. And at stopovers, to live with nomads and the lords of the dunes.

The Mauritanian Sahara offers landscapes that are unique in the world, with its ergs, its gigantic monoliths so dear to Théodore Monod, its thousand-year-old oases and the legendary town of Chinguetti, with its ancestral library and exceptional manuscripts.

Mauritania is a country located in the western part of the African continent, bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Senegal to the southwest, Mali to the east and southeast, Algeria to the northeast, and Western Sahara to the north. The country's diverse landscapes range from the Sahara Desert in the north to the Sahelian savannah in the south.

1. Culture and Ethnicity:
Mauritania is a culturally diverse nation with a population that includes Arab-Berber, Black African, and mixed-race Moorish communities. The fusion of these ethnic groups has contributed to a rich cultural heritage that encompasses traditional music, dance, and crafts. Arabic is the official language, and Islam is the predominant religion, shaping many aspects of daily life and social norms.

2. History:
Mauritania's history is closely tied to the rise and fall of ancient Saharan empires. The region was home to various trading centers and kingdoms, such as the Ghana Empire, the Mali Empire, and the Songhai Empire. European colonial powers, particularly the French, established control over the region in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Mauritania gained independence from France in 1960.

3. Slavery and Human Rights:
One of the notable and concerning aspects of Mauritania's history is its history of slavery, which was officially abolished in 1981. However, modern forms of slavery and caste-based discrimination have persisted in some areas, despite legislative efforts to eradicate them. Efforts to combat these practices and promote human rights have been ongoing, with varying degrees of success.

4. Economy:
Mauritania's economy is largely based on agriculture, fishing, and mining. The country is known for its rich fishing waters, which have historically provided a significant portion of the population's livelihood. Additionally, Mauritania possesses significant iron ore reserves, which play a crucial role in its economy. The country has been working to diversify its economy and attract foreign investment.

5. Challenges:
Mauritania faces several challenges, including poverty, limited infrastructure, and environmental concerns due to its arid climate. Political stability has also been a concern in the past, with military coups and political unrest disrupting governance. The government has been working to address these challenges and promote social and economic development.

6. Geography and Environment:
The landscape of Mauritania is characterized by its diverse geography, ranging from vast sand dunes in the Sahara Desert to semi-arid regions and fertile river valleys. The Senegal River, which forms part of the southern border, provides a source of water for agriculture and human consumption. Desertification and water scarcity remain environmental concerns in the country.

7. Tourism:
Mauritania's unique landscapes, historical sites, and cultural heritage have the potential to attract tourists. The ancient city of Chinguetti, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is known for its well-preserved architecture and historical manuscripts. However, political instability and security concerns have impacted the country's tourism industry.

In recent years, Mauritania has been working to overcome its challenges and promote development, including improvements in infrastructure, education, and healthcare. The country's progress will depend on its ability to manage these challenges while leveraging its cultural and natural assets to create a sustainable and prosperous future for its people.
