Madagascar: A Country Full Of Breathtaking Nature | Somewhere On Earth

Madagascar is one of the worlds largest islands, red from the colour of the earth, and full of tropical life. We meet Elysee a botany student with a fascination for her country’s national tree: the baobab. Soloda is a vaso, which is a group of nomadic coastal inhabitants who lives in an isolated village on the Mozambique channel. And Gil, a Frenchman has lived on the island for over 20 years, and has made his home in the foothills of the mountains working on reforesting the valley where he lives.

The past few days in Antananarivo, Madagascar have been overwhelming, intense and eye-opening. And I apologize for the delays in posting these videos -- it's been nearly impossible to find decent enough wifi.

Madagascar, as a whole, is a beautiful tropical island with stunning greenery, giant baobab trees and unique wildlife (like lemurs!). It's also massive -- about twice the size of my home state of Arizona -- floating 250 miles off the southeastern part of mainland Africa.

But putting the natural beauty aside, Madagascar is one of the World's poorest countries, with the 5th lowest GDP per capita. Walking on the streets of Antananarivo, I couldn't help but observe and analyze what I was seeing --- people just barely managing to survive, working labor-intensive jobs with very little pay.

My new local friends and I took a mini road trip to some outer villages, where I learned about the daily life of people working in the markets. Here's what I discovered.

If there's any takeaway from today (and through travel in general) -- it is to appreciate the life I live. If you are reading this as well, consider yourself lucky because you have internet, which most of the people in Madagascar cannot afford.

60 Second City: Antananarivo, Madagascar! #60secondcities #antananarivo #madagascar #travel #cities

A quick look at the state of Madagascar's capital: Antananarivo! A new 60 second city premieres every Thursday right here!

Madagascar: Island of Unique Biodiversity

Today we’re in a country that places high value on love, fatherland, and progress if its motto is anything to go about. We’re dealing with the people who sing in French and Malagasy “Oh, beloved land of our ancestors.” Attempting some guessing? Yeah, you got it! You’re welcome to Madagascar. This video is exploring The Red Island. Rest assured that this is a country with some special geographical features, distinct demographic information, fascinating history, and an economy that is worthy of study. We’d also look at the promising people of Madagascar while telling you some interesting facts about this country that you might not have considered. We have no doubt that you’ll enjoy this fast-moving and intriguing video about Madagascar.

About Madagascar: Location and Size
Madagascar is a country an island country. Lying off the southeastern coast of Africa, it’s unequivocally an African country. It’s surrounded by the Indian Ocean on almost all sides except for its west where it shares a border with the Mozambique Channel. Other neighboring nations in addition to Mozambique, are the Comoros Islands, the islands of Réunion, and Mauritius. The French territory of Mayotte is to the northwest. Its official name is the Republic of Madagascar and its capital is Antananarivo, the country’s largest and most populated city.
Occupying an area of about 226,756 square miles out of which about 2,124 square miles representing 0.9 percent is water, it’s the 4th-largest island in the world. To put that in context, it’s slightly smaller than Texas. Based on the 2023 estimate, the country’s population is 28,812,195. That makes it the 52nd most populous nation in the world. As you could calculate if you had the time, its population density is 123.5 people per square mile. Malagasy and French coexist as the official languages of Madagascar.

Geographical Features of Madagascar
Madagascar is made up of an eponymous main island and many smaller peripheral islands. While it’s geographically closer to Africa, it was once attached to India and Asia. It was after the initial prehistoric breakup of the supercontinent Gondwana some 160 million years ago that Madagascar split from Africa and attached to the Indian subcontinent. Then, some 90 million years ago, it split again from the Indian subcontinent and has remained isolated ever since.

My First 24 Hours in MADAGASCAR

What a whirlwind the past 24 hours of my life have been in Madagascar!!

I decided to come to Madagascar with absolutely no plan. It's fun being spontaneous sometimes.

I arrived in the capital of Madagascar called Antananarivo early this morning with no hotel reservation, no plan and no idea what I'd be doing... Just seeking adventure!

Through Facebook, I got in touch with a local girl named Ali, who picked me up at the airport with her 2 classmate friends, Dave and Nancy. Not only have they been AMAZING tour guides around Antananarivo, but Dave volunteered to let me sleep at his house with his family -- who cooked me a delicious dinner of Madagascar food called Vary Amin’anana. Life doesn't get any better than this!

Today is a day that I'll never forget. I am so happy to be back in Africa and so thankful to be able to find people like Ali, Dave & Nancy from social media. I can't wait to see more of Madagascar over the coming days!

Explore Madagascar's capital Antananarivo with Sadify

Antananarivo is Madagascar's lively capital city nestled on and around the Central Highlands. In this episode we take a look at the city through the eyes — and lens — of local photographer and activist Sadify Andrian. With 1.5 million residents, Antananarvio — also known as Tana — is the undisputed cultural and economic heart of the island. It is located 1,280 m (4,199 ft) above sea level and has been the center of Malagsy power for three centuries. Although it's often bypassed by tourists, there's plenty of culture and history to discover in this bustling city.

While I constantly try to find the positives in every place I visit, there are a few nations that I just simply didn't enjoy.

The country of BRUNEI is one of them.

I went to Brunei back in 2014, three years before I made videos, but my negative experiences in the country have stuck in my mind ever since. That, combined with its absurd human rights laws such as stoning to death LGBT members, I felt like this video needed to be shared with the world.

Have you ever visited any countries that you didn't enjoy? Please share below, I'm curious to know.
