Have you ever heard of the country called DJIBOUTI? If not, don't feel embarrassed... because it's a very tiny country in the Horn of Africa that gets minimal tourism -- roughly 70,000 visitors per year.
Over the last 2 days, I have explored every facet of the capital & biggest city called Djibouti City. I find this place to be the most interesting country in Africa.
Here are some of my quick realizations:
- It's VERY EXPENSIVE -- I have spent more than $400 in the last 2 days and I haven't done much other than walk around, take a few taxis, eat 4 meals & sleep (keep in mind my visa was $90 and my hotel was $105).
- Walking around the streets feels very much like France, from the colonization period that started in 1884 and ended in 1977. The people here speak French (first), Arabic (second) and English (third, if any at all).
- There is a LOT OF SECURITY everywhere -- police/military guards standing on every corner (literally) with giant guns strapped to their backs. It is kind of crazy and very intimidating, but safe.
- About a quarter of Djibouti's population (~250,000 people) are living in extreme poverty, which is more extreme than you'd think given that this country is so expensive. A massive contrast between rich & poor.

The History of Djibouti

Djibouti, officially the Republic of Djibouti, is a country located in the Horn of Africa. In antiquity, the territory together with Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somaliland was part of the Land of Punt. Nearby Zeila, now in Somaliland, was the seat of the medieval Adal and Ifat Sultanates. In the late 19th century, the colony of French Somaliland was established following treaties signed by the ruling Dir Somali sultans with the French and its railroad to Dire Dawa (and later Addis Ababa) allowed it to quickly supersede Zeila as the port for southern Ethiopia and the Ogaden] It was subsequently renamed to the French Territory of the Afars and the Issas in 1967. A decade later, the Djiboutian people voted for independence. This officially marked the establishment of the Republic of Djibouti, named after its capital city. The new state joined the United Nations the same year, on 20 September 1977. In the early 1990s, tensions over government representation led to armed conflict, which ended in a power-sharing agreement in 2000 between the ruling party and the opposition.
Djibouti is a multi-ethnic nation with a population of over 921,804 inhabitants (the smallest in mainland Africa). French and Arabic are the country's two official languages, Afar and Somali are national languages. About 94% of residents adhere to Islam, which is the official religion and has been predominant in the region for more than a thousand years. The Somalis and Afar make up the two largest ethnic groups, with the former comprising the majority of the population. Both speak the Cushitic branch of the Afroasiatic languages.
Djibouti is strategically located near some of the world's busiest shipping lanes, controlling access to the Red Sea and Indian Ocean. It serves as a key refuelling and transshipment center, and is the principal maritime port for imports from and exports to neighboring Ethiopia. Djibouti is situated in the Horn of Africa on the Gulf of Aden and the Bab-el-Mandeb, at the southern entrance to the Red Sea. It lies between latitudes 11° and 14°N and longitudes 41° and 44°E, at the northernmost point of the Great Rift Valley. It is here in Djibouti that the rift between the African Plate and the Somali Plate meet the Arabian Plate, forming a geologic tripoint.[92] The tectonic interaction at this tripoint has created the lowest elevation of any place in Africa at Lake Assal, and indeed, the second lowest depression on dry land found anywhere on earth (surpassed only by the depression along the border of Jordan and Israel).
The country's coastline stretches 314 kilometres (195 miles), with terrain consisting mainly of plateau, plains and highlands. Djibouti has a total area of 23,200 square kilometres (9,000 sq mi). Its borders extend 575 km (357 mi), 125 km (78 mi) of which are shared with Eritrea, 390 km (242 mi) with Ethiopia, and 60 km (37 mi) with Somaliland.[1] Djibouti is the southernmost country on the Arabian Plate.[93]
Djibouti has eight mountain ranges with peaks of over 1,000 metres (3,300 feet).[94] The Mousa Ali range is considered the country's highest mountain range, with the tallest peak on the border with Ethiopia and Eritrea. It has an elevation of 2,028 metres (6,654 feet).[94] The Grand Bara desert covers parts of southern Djibouti in the Arta, Ali Sabieh and Dikhil regions. The majority of it sits at a relatively low elevation, below 1,700 feet (520 metres).
Extreme geographic points include: to the north, Ras Doumera and the point at which the border with Eritrea enters the Red Sea in the Obock Region; to the east, a section of the Red Sea coast north of Ras Bir; to the south, a location on the border with Ethiopia west of the town of As Ela; and to the west, a location on the frontier with Ethiopia immediately east of the Ethiopian town of Afambo.
Most of Djibouti is part of the Ethiopian xeric grasslands and shrublands ecoregion. The exception is an eastern strip located along the Red Sea coast, which is part of the Eritrean coastal desert.[95]

The country of BRUNEI is one of them.
I went to Brunei back in 2014, three years before I made videos, but my negative experiences in the country have stuck in my mind ever since. That, combined with its absurd human rights laws such as stoning to death LGBT members, I felt like this video needed to be shared with the world.

HELLO FROM COUNTRY #172 - ERITREA!
I'm thrilled to be back in Africa where I will spend the remaining 3 months of the year! Many of you probably haven’t heard of Eritrea before and that’s because it’s a relatively new country and it’s notoriously difficult to enter (top 5 in the world). After 48 hours of roaming around the capital of Asmara and the ancient port city of Massawa, I’ve really enjoyed my time here.
I’m getting flashbacks to when I was in Ethiopia, yet also touches of Yemen Somaliland and Italy. Yes - ITALY! Eritrea is a former Italian colony and their influence is remarkably well-preserved in the form of giant cathedrals, pizza parlors, gelato shops, old Italian cars, appertivos and many people can still speak fluent Italiano.
The capital of Asmara is VERY safe, with kind-hearted people and surprisingly the weather is cold here (2,400 meters high). Unfortunately due to WiFi issues, I haven't been able to upload anything until now, but there’s no hurry because life is wonderful here! More to come soon ????????

What's so attractive about Djibouti in terms of its geographical situation ?

Djibouti is the safest country in the region, because around it you have Eritrea, which is in difficulty. And the Yemen is just 20km to the other side. Somalia, another country in difficulty, is to the south of Djibouti, and Ethiopia is to the east. Ethiopia is an extraordinary country because there are more than 100 million inhabitants, and the only point of entry for merchandise going into the country is via Djibouti. It is the entry port for all merchandise, so Djibouti has extremely well-developed port infrastructure, particularly considering the size of the country itself. It is the entry point for all merchandise going into Ethiopia, so it is a country that is safe in the context of the turbulence that surrounds it, and is an extremely important economical centre for eastern Africa. We can justifiably qualify it as a hub for eastern Africa. This is a point that the Chinese have grasped, as they consider it to be the beginning of the silk route, for Africa at least, and they also want to benefit from the use of this hub to transit merchandise and business. What is more, they very recently created their first overseas military base in Djibouti. It was completed in July 2017.

Djibouti is a small country located in the Horn of Africa, bordered by Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Somalia. While it is not a major destination for immigration, there are still some immigrants in Djibouti, both documented and undocumented.
Many of the immigrants in Djibouti come from neighboring countries such as Somalia, Ethiopia, and Eritrea. Some of them come to Djibouti to seek asylum due to conflicts or persecution in their home countries. Others come to Djibouti in search of better economic opportunities, as Djibouti is a hub for international trade and commerce due to its strategic location near the Red Sea.
There are also some immigrants in Djibouti from other countries, such as Yemen and Sudan. Some of them come to Djibouti as part of migrant smuggling operations, while others come to seek employment or as refugees.
The government of Djibouti has established policies and procedures to manage immigration in the country. However, there are concerns about the treatment of immigrants, particularly those who are undocumented or seeking asylum. Human rights organizations have reported instances of abuse, detention, and deportation of immigrants in Djibouti, particularly those from neighboring countries.
