8 Reasons Why Americans Are LEAVING Costa Rica

8 Reasons Why Americans Are LEAVING Costa Rica

#costarica #costaricatravel #travel

00:00 Intro
00:48 First Reason
01:53 Second Reason
03:09 Third Reason
03:47 Fourth Reason
04:14 Fifth Reason
04:33 Sixth Reason
05:16 Seven Reason
05:47 Eight Reason

Many people who move to Costa Rica, plan to stay for only a few years before packing up and heading back home. People often spend more time thinking about moving to Costa Rica, than they do actually relocating there. In this video, We will discuss some of the most common triggers for expatriation from Costa Rica. How many foreigners call Costa Rica home exactly? The U.S. Department of State estimates that, over 120,000 Americans call Costa Rica home; we'd say that this is by far the country's largest expat population. and Europeans may come in second and third, respectively. The reasons people retire or move to Costa Rica, are as varied as the reasons they decide to leave.

First reason. People quickly pointed out that, living expenses aren't actually that low. They claimed that they came to Costa Rica, because they thought it would be cheaper there. However, the truth was that they spent exactly the same there as in the USA. It didn't come as a huge shock to us, because there has been a lot of talk about how low the cost of living, is on the internet ever since its infancy. The problem is that much of this information was published at least a decade ago. Also, the story that Costa Rica is a cheap place to live has persisted. Contrary to popular belief, Costa Rica is not a cheap place to call home. In fact, it ranks as Latin America's second most expensive country to call home. The reason for this is that import taxes in Costa Rica, are extremely high. Hence, specialized foods and vehicles, are among the priciest things to buy. When these factors are added up, the cost of living is higher than most people realize.

Second reason. An inability to adapt to local culture, as well as unrealistic, misaligned expectations, is likely the most significant. Moving from a developed country like the United States, where you're likely living the rat race, to a more relaxed country like Costa Rica, would be like night and day. Because of the slower pace of life, the culture shock will be more severe, than if one were to move from a similar but neighboring country, such as Panama, to Costa Rica. The most common oversight in this regard is a lack of commitment, to the country over a sustained period of time, which is necessary for successful cultural integration. Consider that you have recently relocated to Costa Rica, and that the first few months have been enjoyable. You've officially entered the honeymoon phase of your move.
Third reason. The 3rd major issue is connected to the first, in that it involves people's unrealistic expectations of the cost of living. It's possible that they've made Costa Rica out to be the promised land, a place where all your problems will be solved, and you'll live a better, more affordable, more beautiful, and more exciting life.
Fourth reason. Concerns about health care were the fourth most common complaint, which we found surprising given, Costa Rica's stellar international reputation in this area. The country's reputation as a top destination for medical tourists, is an integral part of its marketing strategy. Thus, it came as a surprise to us when people said, they were leaving Costa Rica due to health concerns.

Fifth reason. The fifth most common reason was the importance of family, which made us pretty down. To us, this suggests that people waited until a certain point in their lives, such as retirement in Costa Rica, before deciding they wanted to prioritize, spending time with their loved ones.

Sixth reason. Crime rates. When compared to other developed nations, such as the United States, Costa Rica ranks 32nd on the Global Peace Index. Therefore, Costa Rica is quite a peaceful and secure country. It's important to note that this in no way discounts, the existence of crime or other issues. We have also learned that not all criminal activity is reported. It is unclear whether the teco times, an English-language newspaper or la nacion, the largest Spanish-language newspaper, purposefully omits coverage of events in the expat community. Crime against expatriates is likely more common than is commonly believed.

Seventh reason. The next topic brought up was how everyone was complaining, about the same problems they were having with other expats, and online communities. Thus, it saddened us to consider that, some expats who had enthusiastically anticipated their move to Costa Rica, now find themselves dissatisfied with their new home. However, when talking to other expats, who are considering or have recently moved to Costa Rica, they tend to have a negative outlook on life there.

8 Reasons Why Americans LEAVE Costa Rica [Why I Left]

The TRUTH about living in Costa Rica: Why do so many Americans leave Costa Rica after moving there? In this video, I explain what causes expats to change their minds about retiring abroad and why I left Costa Rica after 8 years. Some of the initial reasons that people want to move to Costa Rica include the moderate climate, laid back lifestyle, fresh and healthy food, friendly people, beaches, medical tourism, and the low cost of living. But is Costa Rica really a safe and friendly country or is it actually dangerous and expensive? Once they arrive, many people realize that living in Costa Rica wasn't quite what they expected. Unfortunately, that results in people returning home quite soon after arriving.

After helping more than 500 foreigners move to Costa Rica and living there for eight years, this video explains the top reasons why people move back to the USA and why I left, too, so that you know more about what to expect BEFORE you get there. This is the real and sometimes dark truth about living in Costa Rica. What do you think are the biggest pros and cons of living in Costa Rica? Let us know in the comments.

Costa Ricans (Ticos) are generally gentle, spirited, friendly, educated, polite, and kind people. Most seem to like visitors from other countries and treat them well. There are, of course, exceptions, but on the whole, you can expect to be made welcome wherever you go.

Ticos are a mixing of races. Though most of the country’s 4 million inhabitants descend from Spanish immigrants, many families originated in other parts of Europe, Asia, Africa and Central America. A large number are fair-skinned, especially in the Central Valley. In the outlying areas, more people are mestizos, a mixture of European and Indigenous blood. On the Caribbean coast you find strong links to African lineage, and in Talamanca Mountain, you will find it inhabited by the pure-blooded Indians of various tribes. In Guanacaste Province, you will find Ticos dark skinned reflecting their Nicaraguan heritage.

Ticos are extremely family oriented and love music and dance. When I say love music, I mean it is everywhere and all the time... and LOUD. They also occasional enjoy alcohol. In fact, Costa Ricans, as almost all Latinos, party loud and long and really enjoy each other's company. You will definitely know if there is a party in your neighborhood! Not unexpectedly, you probably won't get invited to those parties until you speak the language! That is why you will see me repeat time and again in this site, Learn Spanish if you plan to live here. It makes all the difference.

Who are these people?
==================

They have the same goals, desires and fears you do. They want to love and be loved, they want their children to be educated, they worry about their teenagers getting tongue rings and tattoos, they worry about the guy their daughter is dating, and they want to thrive and prosper. They want their children to have better lives than they do. They worry about politics, Iraq, crooked politicians, and the economy. Sound familiar?

Ticos are often polite to the extreme. Most will do almost anything to avoid a confrontation or appear rude in any way. This can cause MUCH confusion to foreigners, especially North Americans who tend to be very direct. If a Tico feels a no answer would in any way offend, they may well say yes or maybe, or I think so or that might be difficult, which is still pretty much means no, but sounds more polite! Easy Huh?

Many visitors, especially from the US, find this a tad difficult to comprehend. We North Americans tend to be direct and straight forward. Those from New York may be even a bit more, ahem, direct. If you plan to live here for any length of time, my suggestion would be to listen carefully, be patient, respect their culture (it's only about 1,000 years OLDER than our culture in the US), and act like you are a guest... which you are!

Why are they called Ticos?
=====================
Ticos is the collective common name that Costa Ricans cell themselves. More specifically, a Tica is a female Costa Rican and a Tico is a male.

The name comes from a preference Ticos have of using the diminutive in their speech. By diminutive, I mean they change everything so it means 'little something'. For instance, a Tico might call his grandmother (abuela), abuelita, or her house (casa) her casita. A kiss (beso) becomes a besito! This goes on and on and covers almost everything. In fact, it makes learning Costa Rica style Spanish a bit harder as you have to learn these diminutives even if you don't use them. So why Tico? Because many people pronounced the diminutive saying momentito (meaning just a short moment), as momentico. I seldom hear the old ...ico thing any more, but the ...ito or ...ita thing is alive and well.
Why do Latinos always look so dangerous? (Believe it or not... I get asked this a LOT!)

To whom? North Americans? They certainly don't look dangerous to each other!
===================

Here is my personal opinion: I blame it on Hollywood! For many years, the 'bad guys' in movies and on TV always were the dark, swarthy types. Heavy 5 o'clock shadow, black hair, often dark clothing, dark complexions, etc. In other words, Latin! The good guys always were clean shaven, wore white and generally looked... well... like North Americans. Now this has changed a bit in recent years, but I think we have been trained to look for the bad guy image. When we see it, we get nervous. Ignore it.
