La Paz, Bolivia – history, travel guide and things to do

La Paz is the seat of Bolivian government. The main points of interest are The Government Palace of Bolivia (Palacio Quemado), San Jorge district, Estadio Hernando Siles, Tiwanaku Square, Mercado de Brujas, Plaza Murillo, Calle Jaén, and Parque Urbano Central. The most important churches are the Metropolitan Cathedral and San Francisco Church.

You will see traffic zebras (cebrita) - a team of young people who dress in full-body zebra costumes with the goal of helping people to cross the busy streets of La Paz. A system of urban transit aerial cable cars called Mi Teleférico (My Cable Car) was opened in 2014, connecting La Paz and El Alto. The most interesting museums in La Paz are the National Museum of Archaeology, Museo de la Coca, and Museo de Textiles Andinos Bolivianos.

Bolivia, What Tourists Don't See

8 years ago my brother in law Christian was on a humanitarian trip in Bolivia. While he was there a family of indigenous Aymara people, asked him to be the godfather of their new baby boy. He agreed and participated in a ceremonial first haircut. Since that day my brother in law hasn't been able to return.

Earlier this year I had the opportunity to visit Bolivia, and when I heard this story I just knew I had to find this family and share with Christian how they were doing. The only problem was that I only had the name of a distant village and a photo.

Bolivia - The Land and Its People

Various images of the Bolivian landscape and the Bolivian people. The images are soft—sorry about that. Bolivia is one of my favourite trips — I loved the people and I loved the country itself. It's sad, but it's true, that poor countries are much more human.

I live in Canada. I'm not rich by Canadian standards, but I think I'm rich because I've met wonderful people in poor countries. We have wonderful people in Canada too of course. Life is confusing. I try to express my feelings more, now that I'm getting old, in the hope that others may get back to me with their feelings. But no one does. C'est la vie.

Bolivia's day of the Sea

The blue flag you see in this video is the flag of the Bolivian Navy...except that Bolivia is a landlocked country...

This is a part of the history of Americas I did not know until this week.

It's fitting for me to learn, as next week, I make my way to Chile. It also gives me the ability to reflect on how international treaties hold and how citizens of each country express their identity.

The ocean is so important for diplomatic and trade reasons, so it makes absolute sense why Bolivia feels so strongly about this issue. The War of the Pacific happened from 1879 – 1883, and 130 years later, I can't help but feel the issue is not truly resolved, even as a foreigner.

The alleged quote of Abaroa has been placed on Bolivian stamps, memorabilia, and more. Events like this week and folklore like that, whether true or not, transforms Día Del Mar into an international affair. This year, Bolivia showcased what has been called the biggest flag in the world – a 200km flag of the navy stretching near the Bolivian-Chilean border where Bolivia claims is their rightful land.

And interesting public display as this case is currently being revised in international courts as well. What do you think of this issue? Opinions?

Music: Bolivian National Anthem

Bolivia

Bolivia,is a landlocked country in central South America. It is bordered by Brazil to the north and east, Paraguay and Argentina to the south, and Chile and Peru to the west.

Prior to European colonization, the Bolivian territory was a part of the Inca Empire, which was the largest state in Pre-Columbian America. The Spanish Empire conquered the region in the 16th century. During most of the Spanish colonial period, this territory was called Upper Peru or Charcas and was under the administration of the Viceroyalty of Peru, which included most of Spain's South American colonies. After declaring independence in 1809, 16 years of war followed before the establishment of the republic, named for Simón Bolívar, on August 6, 1825. Bolivia has struggled through periods of political instability, dictatorships and economic woes.

Bolivia is a democratic republic, divided into nine departments. Its geography is varied from the peaks of the Andes in the west, to the eastern lowlands, situated within the Amazon Basin. It is a developing country, with a medium Human Development Index score, and a poverty level around 60%. Its main economic activities include agriculture, forestry, and fishing, mining and manufacturing goods such as textiles, clothing, refined metals, and refined petroleum. Bolivia is very wealthy in minerals especially tin.

The Bolivian population, estimated at 9 million, is multiethnic, including Amerindians, Mestizos, Europeans, Asians and Africans. The main language spoken is Spanish, although the Aymara and Quechua languages are also common. The large number of different cultures within Bolivia has contributed greatly to a wide diversity in fields such as art, cuisine, literature, and music. ( source Wikipedia )
