Generac 2100i generator, first impressions

I added to my infrastructure, purchasing a new quiet generator to the quiver. It was on sale during Prime Days for around $260. I think that was a good value for the quality and quiet.

Champion 2500 watt Inverter Generator - A detailed look

I picked up a Champion 2500 inverter generator at BJ's for $449. Here is what was in the box, how I broke it in and how it sounds. A nice portable generator that is priced well.

Must Have for Your RV, Portable Generator, Honda Review EU2200i, EU2000i, EU1000i

Now that we have been RV Living Full Time for 6 months, we have found what products we truly need. One of them is a generator- whether you have solar or not.
We purchased our Honda EU2000i generator 16 years ago as Hurricane Charley was approaching our home in Central Florida. It kept us powered up for a week while our power was out. Since then it has gotten us through many extended power outages because of hurricanes. When we bought our First travel trailer in 2011, our honda generator was the perfect companion for our RV so we could dry camp.
In this video we will share our 16 year experience with this generator and its successor the EU2200i generator. We will cover these topics Important specifications, Maintenance, Storage, Connecting to an RV, extension cords, fuel cans, using it with a solar setup, and our overall 16 year impression.
We will also go over the baby brother to the EU2000/EU2200, the EU1000i generator and how that may be an excellent option.
If you are looking for portable generator, the Honda line of generators cant be beat, but they are not the cheapest generator on the market, you get what you pay for.

It's a ridiculous amount of work that typically involves high dollar camera drops, blue-screen-of-death computer crashes, and at least one angry shotgun wielding old man shouting, “Hey! Get the hell outta here!” Once the final video is posted, rewards here on YouTube are few and far between (unless you are a masochist who enjoys being verbally abused by anonymous trolls). RVers and generators that run off propane go hand in hand. An RV always has propane on hand so why carry around a can of gas if you don't need to? Unfortunately, Honda does not offer a dual fuel inverter generator. So for us Honda lovers, the only option is to take matters in to our own hands and install a propane conversion kit.
The Tri-fuel Conversion Kit through Hutch Mountain is by far the best propane conversion kit available for the EU2200i and EU2000i models. It is OEM quality, easy to install, and allows simple switching between gasoline and propane.

WEN 56200i Generator 1 year review.

In this episode we review the WEN 56200i inverter generator.

WEN Generator
15A to 30A pigtail
Boeshield T9

We were in the market for a 2000W inverter generator about a year ago. We looked at the Yamaha and Honda options but thought $1000.00 was a bit steep. Then we stumbled upon the WEN 56200i. This generator boasted the same running and peak wattage 1600/2000 as the Honda and Yamaha generators but costs about half as much. We were a little apprehensive about the purchase believing you usually get what you pay for, but we were pleasantly surprised with the WEN 56200i. This generator comes with an Eco-Mode that can adjust the RPMs based upon the electrical load. It is also capable of parallel connections with a Parallel Kit allowing you to hook up another generator if you need larger electrical capacity. This is a Pure Sine Wave system allowing you to hook up your sensitive electronics without worry.

This system is fairly quiet at anchor and the 8 hour run time on a tank of gas could allow you to run it throughout the night. It will get up to about 60 decibels at peak power which is comparable to the Honda or Yamaha. We do usually turn it off if we are near other cruisers, just to be courteous but we have gone to sleep with it on.

We use a pigtail in one of the two three-prong 120V receptacles and a jumper in the other. The jumper allows the system to no fault for the reverse polarity indicator on our AC panel. The pigtail gets plugged into our shore power cord and the boat. This allows all of our outlets and any other AC powered systems in the boat to get power. There is also a 12V DC receptacle and a 5V USB Port if you need more hookups at the generator.

The WEN 56200i also has several safety features to keep the system running smoothly. The Overload Protection, Low-Oil Shutdown, and Low Fuel Shutdown help ensure you won’t damage your generator or run it completely out of fuel.

While this is a portable generator you want to make sure you have room to store it on your boat. It measures 18X11X18 and weighs just under 50lbs making it a little hard to store on a small sailboat. Lisa made a Sunbrella cover to keep it out of the direct sunlight while it’s on the deck. We also disassembled the generator and prepped it for the marine environment using high-temperature paint and Boeshield T-9 to keep corrosion at bay.

We have a 12,500 BTU AC and heat system aboard Starjewel. This generator has enough power to run the air conditioner and charge phones, computers, and the battery bank. However, it did not have enough power to start the compressor every time. We installed a SUPCO Hard Start capacitor to our air conditioner. This allows us to run our AC and almost anything else aside from the microwave at the same time. This little capacitor has really expanded our comfort at anchor in the winter and summer.

Comparing Westinghouse iGen 2200 with iGen 2500

Comparing Westinghouse iGen 2200 with iGen 2500

Sharon does a comparison of our Westinghouse iGen 2200, which we've had for about two and a half years, and our iGen 2500, which is new. The dimensions of the two generators are almost exactly the same.

With the 2200, you need to vent the gas, but the 2500 has a self-venting gas cap. On the front panel, many things are very similar with the generators. Both have covered outlets, USB charging ports, reset switch, a low oil indicator, overload indicator, an economy mode, and a ground.

The 2500 has a display that shows you the number of liters of fuel you have left, and the percentage of watts being used.

The big difference between the two generators is the capacity. The 2200 has a maximum of 2200 peak watts and 1800 running watts. The 2500 has a maximum of 2500 watts and 2200 running watts. The engine cc's are different; that's why the capacities are different.

Another difference between the two generators is the 2500 has the gas cap on a chain, so it stays with the generator while you are filling it with gas. The 2200 has a gas cap that comes off, so you have to put it somewhere while you fill your generator with gas.

The 2500 has a digital data center which will display remaining run time, power output, fuel level, voltage, and lifetime hours. Sharon did put an hour meter on top of the 2500 so she could see the hours without turning the generator on.

The two generators weigh the same amount. The inside setup for both generators is about the same. The oil fill and drain is at the same location and the carburetor is at the same place on both,

Westinghouse iGen2200 Generator 2 Year Review

Westinghouse iGen2200 Generator 2 Year Review

Sharon, one of the Two Tired Teachers, reviews our Westinghouse iGen2200 Generator. After 2 years, it is still doing exactly what we bought it to do.

That's the first thing Sharon talks about is why we got a generator. We bought the generator to go along with our Micro Minnie when we are boondocking.

One of the questions we've been asked is what do we run with our generator. One of the things we do is plug the RV into the generator. You have to use a dogbone to do that, but it recharges the house battery, the battery on the front of your RV.

We have run our microwave, coffee pot, and space heater off of the generator. At home to exercise the generator between trips, we've plugged weed eaters and other yard equipment into it.

Another question we've had is how often do we change the oil. The owners' manual says to change the oil after the first 20 hours and then every 50 hours after that. During the first 20 hours, you need to have a load on the generator. A space heater is an example of an appliance that puts a load on a generator.

One thing that the generator we have does not have is an hour meter. The hour meter keeps up with the number of hours the generator has been run so that you can change the oil at the appropriate time. Since ours doesn't have the hour meter, Sharon keeps track of the hours in a small notebook. She gets to the closest quarter of an hour to log it in.

If we have a long trip planned, one where we know we will be using the generator, if it is anywhere near time to change the oil, Sharon goes ahead and changes it because she want to do that at home, rather than on the road.

One of the things Sharon has done for the last 9 or 10 months is run the generator every two weeks or so when we aren't using it on trips. It seems to keep it in good shape. In the summer, she's plugging yard tools into it to give it a load.

In December of 2020, when we knew we wouldn't be traveling for a couple of months, Sharon bought a can of Sea Foam and put it in with the gas that had been left over. She let the engine run for about 30 minutes to see that it was completely through the engine.

When Sharon was ready to start the generator for the 2021 travel season, it wouldn't start. The problem was the spark plug. Although it may seem as if under 100 hours of use wouldn't necessitate a change of spark plugs, it did. Several times we ran the generator for under an hour. Other times we ran it as much as 7 hours in a day.

Changing the spark plug wasn't difficult, but it brings to mind some things that come with the Westinghouse iGen2200 Generator. One of those things is a funnel that is shaped so that putting oil in the generator is very easy. Another is a pre-measured amount of oil. Sharon has kept the container so that when she changes the oil, she fills that container and knows she doesn't need to worry about overfilling the generator with oil.

A third thing that came with the generator is a tool used to change the spark plug. You will need that to change the spark plug.

Another thing Sharon does to help the generator run smoothly is she uses ethanol free gas and she puts stabilizer in with the gas.

One of the questions we've been asked is how long will the generator run on a tank of gas. We can run the generator approximately 10 hours per gallon of gas.

When you crank the Westinghouse iGen2200 generator, you have to crank going straight up. You need to do three things to start this generator. First, vent the gas. Second, you move it to choke, and finally, you pull the crank straight up.

Once you've started it, give it a minute to run before putting much of a load on it. If you don't do that, it may very well die and you'll have to crank it again.

The Westinghouse iGen2200 generator seems to run better if you gradually increase the load. For example, at home when I just need to exercise it some, I'll start with a space heater on low. Once it's run for a bit, I increase the load to high, and it works for me.

Remember that the generator does have an exhaust, and that exhaust gets hot. It isn't excessively hot, but it could melt a water bottle that was right beside the generator.

For a generator, it is quiet. You can easily carry on a conversation while standing at the generator. You don't have to yell; it's quiet enough that you can speak normally.

One of the questions we often get is have we run the AC with it. The short answer is yes. We do have an easy start on our AC, so the generator is able to run it. When we first got the generator, we ran the AC for an hour. Honestly, that isn't a reason why we got the generator, so running the AC off the generator isn't something we normally do.

Finally, do not hesitate to call the 800 number on the generator if you have any questions. A real person took our call when we called it. They knew the answers to our questions.
