Beautiful Kyoto: Being a Maiko (featuring Fukunae-san)
Though a lot of what goes on in Kyoto's geisha districts takes place in private teahouses and behind gilded screens, it's no secret that maiko (geisha apprentices) lead strict and challenging lifestyles in the pursuit of their art.
Last year the Kyoto Fan (Discover Kyoto) team had the privilege of interviewing one of Miyagawa-chō's hard working maiko, Fukunae-san, to see what kind of training and preparation she goes through in order to one day become a top class geisha (or geiko, as they are called in Kyoto). Follow along as Fukunae-san takes us through an average day in her life, including music study, hair and make-up, dressing, and entertaining in the evenings. We hope you too will one day have a chance to experience this amazing Kyoto tradition.

Geisha Maiko Makeover in Kyoto (it's a crazy process)
Getting a geisha makeover in Kyoto is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Enjoy watching with us as we witness this amazing Japanese culture first-hand. The makeup portion took quite long, but it was very fun to choose the kimono afterwards, get professional maiko photos taken in the studio, and then walk around Higashiyama. Some people on the street thought I was a real geisha!

Alexis and I got to visit the Maiko Makeup Experience in Kyoto, Japan. We were able to put on traditional Japanese Maiko Makeup, wear kimonos, learn about Maiko (because I had no idea what that was before this) and take some lovely pictures. A bit nervous because we weren't sure how the makeup look would turn out on us, but we really actually enjoyed it and I encourage men and women who are going to Kyoto to try it!! #MaikoExperience

Meet Maiko in Kyoto | Mom is a former maiko
This video is a vlog of a trip to Kyoto by a Japanese family living in Tokyo. Today's video is kind of special. Because I'm taking you back to my home, where I spent time as a maiko geiko. I think that not many people, no matter how many trips they have taken to Japan, have experienced this culture. I have learned many important things in my life in this town called Gion. It is a place that always reminds me of my beginnings.

Hi, welcome to Part 2 of our Japan Diaries. This vlog covers days 8 to 10 of our 25-day adventure in Japan. We stayed in Kyoto for 6 days and this is our first 3 full days in the beautiful city. Maiko Makeover by a Geisha in Kyoto, Japan! // Stuart's Bucket List
I got made over by a real-life Geisha also known as a Geiko in Kyoto, Japan!! I hope you enjoy this video and behind-the-scenes experience from my Maiko Makeover. A Maiko is actually a Geisha apprentice or a Geisha in training.
After seeing Memoirs of a Geisha, this was definitely on my bucket list and something that really made my Japan trip special! I still don't think I've recovered from the weight of that wig or my winter kimono. It definitely takes a team of people to properly put on a traditional Geisha kimono.
I also found it fascinating that maikos can only put red lipstick on the bottom lip. And I also wasn't allowed any eyeliner other than the red in the corners of my eyes. When I looked in the mirror I honestly did not recognize myself! Maikos wear much less eye makeup but are allowed to wear beautiful headpieces like the one I am wearing.
You can find places all over Kyoto, Japan especially in Gion that offer Maiko Makeovers. However, not all of them use real Kimonos, which are very expensive and adhere to the proper guidelines. I learned that the makeovers that are very glamorous and sexy might be more appealing for your Instagram, but you are actually be made into oiran, which is an escort.
This Geisha Makeover was set up for me by this wonderful program I participated in called Kyoto with Kids which you can learn more about here:
Kyoto with Kids is amazing for families traveling to Kyoto! They can arrange an entire day for you doing things both the parents and kids will love. I spent my morning doing my Geisha Makeover and photoshoot and then the spent the afternoon with my family and other local children and parents at a temple. I will share more about that experience in another video.
The photography packages start at a couple of hundred dollars and the price increases according to how many setups you are interested in. Some places also offer just kimono rentals and hair and makeup services and then you can take your own photos.
