Banjul is the capital city of the Gambia, a small West African country bordered by Senegal. The city sits on an island where the Gambia River meets the Atlantic Ocean. Its colonial buildings include the National Museum, dedicated to Gambian culture and history. Vendors at the lively Albert Market sell colorful textiles and local produce. The city's main entrance is marked by the immense, columned Arch 22 gateway.
I am on a mission to visit 21 countries in 2021 telling the African story the African way. So far I have done 6 countries. 15 remaining.

The Gambia and Senegal in Winter

In this film I have tried to capture some aspects of West African life that my wife and I encountered on a trip in January of 2016 to the Gambia and the Casamance province of Senegal. We spent a week in a Western-style seaside hotel in Greater Banjul to gently break us into West African life before setting off for a guesthouse in the bush near Abéné in Senegal, where life is rather more basic. In the Gambia we were fortunate enough to see in the very grounds of our hotel several specimens of birdlife that we'd never seen before, lizards different to the ones we know in France and even a troop of monkeys! The highlight was possibly an impromptu fish market we witnessed on the beach, and an unexpected experience was that of a live performance of music given to accompany a meal at the hotel restaurant. The highlight of our stay in the Casamance was indisputably setting foot on the beach just at the time the fishing boats were coming ashore and unloading their catch. To get to the Gambia we flew from Limoges to Liverpool, took a train from there to Manchester and caught a flight for Banjul.

It is the smallest country on the African continental mainland and is bordered to the north, east, and south by Senegal, and has a small coast on the Atlantic Ocean in the west. On 18 February 1965, The Gambia was granted independence from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland; and joined The Commonwealth. Kachikally Crocodile Pool in Bakau, The Gambia was discovered hundreds of years ago by the natives of Bakau, it is some 14km (8 miles) from the capital Banjul, and is home to more than 100 crocodiles. All of which prefer the taste of fish to flesh. This video shows views of the crocodile pool, as well as a prank that was played on one onlooker. Watch this video to the end as the guy who gets a prank played on him screams like a girl.
