Barely Surviving our First 24 Hours of Van Life in GUATEMALA
Welcome to our first few days of van life in Guatemala! Not sure if we have any guardian angels left after this week, or if they've packed up to head to more relaxed jobs ????

We're Chesca and Ben, and with our two pups River & Scout (???? ???? ) we live and travel full-time in our self converted sprinter van, Sophia. We spent the first 3 years road tripping and doing as much van life in Europe as we could, from the wild coasts of Portugal to the Syrian border in Turkey, tackling lockdowns and another DIY van re-build along the way. But, as restrictions get imposed on British travellers in Europe, we felt like a new challenge. In the summer of 2022, we shipped our tiny home on wheels to Canada to begin the Pan American Highway - taking us from Alaska to the bottom of Argentina. This is our journey, come and join us.

Van life in Guatemala is about to begin! It's time to leave the bustle of Mexico behind and begin the Central American leg of the Pan American Highway. We'd heard horror stories about the Mexico/Guatemala borders, but we had to take our chances and deal with whatever got thrown our way. (Still can't wrap our heads around the fact our little UK van is here!)

Solo in Guatemala's Most Violent Cartel Hood! (Zone-18)????????
Guatemala City is divided into different zones. The biggest and most violent is Zone 18. It is fully controlled by gang members (Mara 18) and every local I asked warned me not to visit this place at all. Not even its small central market.
I fully respect their advice which is for my own good, but I am very curious to see with my own eyes what this Hood Cartel looks like and most importantly what the locals there have to say about the most dangerous place in Guatemala City.
