Travel to Greenland means experiencing a unique Inuit culture - and Icebergs! Ilulissat is one of the world's most remarkable destinations. Situated where the UNESCO recognised Ilulissat Icefjord enters Disko Bay, the town watches over a procession of icebergs that mesmerise with their fantastical shapes and colours. It is also a centre for sledge-dog culture and the howls of the dogs are an ever-present soundtrack. This short film provides a brief history of the settlement and also visits the Icefjord Centre, the Icefjord itself, and the Knud Rasmussen museum before taking to the water to view the icebergs up close. ???? May, 2014 ▶️ The Disko Bay including the breath-taking Ilulissat Icefjord alone would be a very good reason to visit Greenland. I was joined by Tim and we were just about to start hiking the Arctic Circle Trail, so checking out the icebergs was a no brainer for us. It is hard to comprehend the amount of ice floating around in Ilulissat. We also saw Eqi Glacier up close from a boat tour, witnessing huge icebergs calve into the ocean. One of my favourite trips for sure which ended up on my 30th Birthday surrounded by Orange Sunset Icebergs.
PS: Sadly I deleted the raw material from my trips prior to 2017. So unfortunately, you have to endure the lower video quality , sorry! ????

Greenland - Since 8 years I'm traveling to this magical country. Today quiet and untouched places are becoming more and more rare. On my first visit to Greenland, I was fascinated by the incredible power of nature that can be felt everywhere. But during the last years things have changed. The amount of icebergs is increasing savagely. Glaciers I'm visiting every year are retreating not meters but kilometers a year and the unending amount of ice seems to be endless. There is nothing more beautiful than an iceberg - everyone is unique and the light reflecting from its surface is magical. It's sad how close beauty and decay can be seen in an iceberg. This movie is is an appreciation to the ice - for me the most amazing aggregate state of water.
Behind the scenes
For this short film I travelled to Greenland with my drones several times. Always with the target of a certain region in a certain light situation. The shots from the calving glacier took me 4 days at the Eqi Glacier and over 70 battery charges for only 4 usable shots of a few seconds. It's a very hard intention to film the very right moment on a glacier front of about 6km wide - especially close up. But the hardest thing of flying in Greenland is the fact, that every 2-3 minutes the difference between the magnetic north and the geographic north (which are not the same place - especially so far north) causing a fatal p-gps flight error and the drone is flying away (also the camera's horizon). But at the end every single flight was worth it - filming Icebergs from above is one of the most beautiful things I've ever done. Additionally I used the drone to scout the landing spot and look for polar bears. The best thing for bears and humans is to not meet each other on shore.

Greenland Cinematic FPV
The Ilulissat Icefjord in Greenland is a UNESCO world heritage site. It is a spectacular landscape of ice. Formed by gigantic pieces of ice breaking off the glacier and being stuck in the shallow waters of the fjord.
Over years the ice is pushed through the fjord where it eventually ends up as icebergs floating in the Disko Bay.
Join me on the exploration of this spectacular landscape taken on multiple sails in July 2022.

1. Ilulissat Icefjord
Announced as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004, the Ilulissat Icefjord stretches 40km from the Greenland ice sheet to Disko Bay. Jakobshavn Isbræ, the most productive glacier at the Northern Hemisphere, is located at the eastern end of this fjord. Almost 20 billion tonnes of icebergs get passed out of the fjord each year after they’ve melted.
To witness the gorgeous vistas that this ever-changing and ephemeral site has to offer. you can either go for a hike, hire a boat, or you can take a helicopter tour to get an aerial view.
2. Eqi Glacier
If you are looking for one of the most beautiful places to visit in Greenland, then there’s one sight you must witness - ice breaking off of Eqi glacier. A boat takes you close enough to experience this cascading spectacle, it is quite an event! The Eqi Glacier ends in the fjord 80 km north of Ilulissat.
Its natural beauty is unparalleled and sure to leave you in awe of not just its own but the nature’s magnificence as a whole! The little fishing boats in which the tours are offered, go through the cold water right into the shadow of the glacier for you to witness the collision of ice and water.

3. Disko Bay
Occupying the western coast of Greenland, this bay has historical significance, as it was at this place Erik the Red, a Norse explorer first started a settlement in 985 AD. The Inuits, however, are said to have encountered Disko Bay even earlier than 2400 BC.
The nutritious waters make it a habitat conducive to the survival of a wide array of marine lives such as benthic and pelagic fishes. During springtime, you can even catch a glimpse of the bowhead, humpback pilo, killer and narwhal whales.
It is also the site where you can view gulls, kittiwakes, cormorants, eider ducks, and migratory birds such as harp, bearded, ringed and hooded seals. The tours would last either a three hours or as long as an entire week.

Disko Bay Greenland Near The City of Ilulissat
I have traveled to over 100 countries. Disko Bay, Greenland is one of the most beautiful locations on the planet. If you want to go there, you can find hotels and an airport at the near by city of Ilulissat. Book a short three hour day ice cruise before you book your hotel and air fair on Air Greenland. I suggest doing Disko Bay, Greenland and Iceland on the same trip. Minimum you need three nights in Iceland and two nights in Disko Bay Greenland. Enjoy your adventure to this frozen heaven. I went on September 10th. You need to go when the ice is melted. I have not researched it, but I guess the window is August and September. PS...the Northern Lights are in the winter. If you go to Greenland in the winter, you cannot see this ice flow. Do your research. I just got lucky on the timing.

This is recorded while we were driving around, and there is not so many people outside in these days, because of the corona virus. (It is not here in Ilulissat yet).
