The Great Wall of China: Hiking & Camping!

The two days we spent exploring remote portions of The Great Wall were some of the most awe-inspiring, challenging and beautiful days of our 21 days in China! We started day one on the Jiankou portion of the wall and then to the Huanghuacheng that night. We hiked in the dark and set up a tent to camp on the wall, waking up the next morning to gorgeous songs of bugs and wind passing through the mist the next morning. After packing up the camp site, we hiked the Huanghuacheng section for the rest of the day. I highly recommend visiting these gorgeous pieces of the wall and experiencing history far from tourists. It's truly unforgettable.

If you want to avoid the crowds at the Great Wall of China we recommend a few things. Firstly don't go to the Great Wall of China on a Weekend, there will be a lot more people there and you will miss out on the sights. Secondly head to Mutianyu Great Wall , although this is quite a developed section of the wall, it gives you a real sense of the size and importance of the Great Wall of China. Thirdly we recommend taking the bus there, although you can take a tour to the Great wall of China it is always recommended to take the bus, Chinese tourists will often take the bus and it is a great way to do China travel on a budget.

The Mutianyu toboggan, the Mutianyu Cable Car and the Mutianyu chairlift are all great ways to get up and down to the wall. But we recommend for the best experience at the great wall of china to go up the chairlift and take the toboggan back down. The China Great Wall sled ride or Mutianyu luge are totally worth it, one of our most fun experiences in China. Just make sure you leave enough space between you and the other guests to give enough speed.

How to go to the Great Wall Mutianyu by public bus

This video shows how to get to the Great Wall at Mutianyu in Beijing by public bus.
Here is a summary of how to do it:
- Take the subway line 2 to the Dongzhimen station
- Take exit C and follow signs to the Transport Center
- Enter the transport center (next to the KFC) and look for bus 916 Express
- 916 Express is written as 916块
- bus fare is 12RMB or 6RMB if you have the transportation card (Yikatong)
- The bus takes a little over one hour to reach the village of Huairou. In Huairou you get off at the Huairou Bei Da Jie stop. Stops are announced in Chinese only. Let the driver know that you are getting off at Beijing-based Da Jie.
* **One or two stops before Bed Da Jie, someone will stick their head in the bus and yell Mutianyu Great Wall and wave you out. Do not pay attention to the scammers. The will overcharge you to take you there.***
- At Bei Da Die, cross the street to take bus H23 or H24 (5RMB). The ride will be about 15-20 minutes.
- Near that bus stop there will be some drivers with mini vans who will offer to take you to Mutianyu. It is ok to take these vans but negotiate a rate of 5RMB per person.
- Note that when returning to Beijing, you will take bus 916 at this bus stop.

Great Wall Of China and Machu Picchu Trek - Preparation and Itinerary - Info Talk

Machu Picchu:
Great Wall Of China:

Our February Info Talk on Machu Picchu and the Great Wall Of China. Learn all about both of these trips of a lifetime where we cover everything from equipment to training.

Machu Picchu:
This trek to reach the lost city of Machu Picchu is one of the most iconic in the world. Our journey on the Salkantay trail is widely considered the most beautiful route to the ruins. The Machu Picchu trek is defined by massive snow-capped mountains which collide with lush tropical rainforests. Our adventure includes four days of trekking from the base of the sacred Salkantay mountain, considered by locals to be the “Guardian Spirit of the Andes” and finish at Machu Picchu. We pass through traditional Andean villages learning about the Andean way of life as we go. This route offers fantastic views of lakes surrounded by breathtaking peaks. We then continue ascending to a high pass were we will be treated to stunning views of the Salkantay and Umantay mountains. On our last day of trekking we climb to Llactapata Pass which is located at the rear of Machu Picchu offering our first glimpse of our destination. We rise early the following day to get to Machu Picchu and enjoy a guided tour of the city. Enjoy three nights in Cusco the ancient Inca capital and the starting point of our expedition. The vivid sights and smells coupled with the interesting fusion of Spanish and Inca architecture make it a fantastic place to explore and enjoy some retail therapy!

Great Wall Of China:
Our Great Wall of China trek is designed to take in the best sights of the Great Wall and also to experience some of the more remote and unique sections. The 11 day expedition includes six days of trekking and a day of sightseeing in Beijing. The route has both steep and gentle sections as we pass towers, forts, barracks and enjoy stunning scenery throughout. We visit the more famous sections such as Jinshanling and Mutianyu as well as experiencing the more remote and less travelled sections of ‘wild’ wall. The Great Wall of China is arguably the most impressive man-made structure in the World. The wall formed the front line defence of Imperial China which was under attack from nomadic tribes. Trekking the Great Wall of China is truly an experience of a lifetime. On a clear day one gets a fantastic view of the wall winding through and over the beautiful mountains that once formed China’s northern border. As well as walking along the wall we visit nearby villages meeting friendly locals and getting a great sense of rural life in China. After the Great Wall of China trek, we enjoy a full days sightseeing in Beijing including Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and the Summer Palace. Enjoy the amazing food of Beijing which for some people is a greater experience than seeing the wall!
