Gijón, Asturias, Spain, Europe
Gijón or Xixón is the largest city and municipality in the autonomous community of Asturias in Spain. Early medieval texts mention it as Gigia. It is located on the Bay of Biscay, approximately 20 km (12 mi) north of Oviedo, the capital of Asturias. The city is situated on the coast of central Asturias, from sea level to an altitude of 513 metres at Picu Samartín and 672 metres at Peña de los Cuatro Jueces, bordered on the West by Carreño, the East by Villaviciosa, and to the South by Siero and Llanera. The city is situated along the Asturian coast and is distinguished by the peninsula of Cimavilla (the original settlement) which separates the beach of San Lorenzo and adjacent neighbourhoods to the east from the beaches of Poniente and Arbeyal, the shipyards, and the recreational port and the Port of El Musel to the west. It is close to the other main Asturian cities, Oviedo and Avilés. Gijón has a temperate oceanic climate typical of the Atlantic coast of Spain, with cool summers and wet and mostly mild winters. The onshore flow from the Atlantic Ocean creates a cool summer and mild winter climate where severe heat and very cold temperatures are rare. The narrow temperature range is demonstrated by the record August temperature being only 6.4 °C warmer than the all-time record January temperature. The climate is wet and cloudy by Spanish standards, but is indeed drier than other locations on the Atlantic in the country. Humidity is high year-round. Summer temperatures are very consistent as proven by the fact that the all-time warmest month of August 1997 had an average temperature of 20.9 °C (69.6 °F) and no month has ever been recorded at an average high above 24.7 °C (76.5 °F) in comparison to the 23.2 °C (73.8 °F) August normal high. Another clear underlining of the marine influence is that the coolest ever August has been as near the average as 17.9 °C (64.2 °F).

The 18th-century Revillagigedo Palace houses an international arts center. It adjoins the Collegiate Church of San Juan Bautista, now a concert hall. Nearby is the 16th-century Clock Tower, with a museum about the city.

On Silver Whisper: Amazed By The Cider Pouring In Gijon, Spain
Today, Silver Whisper called on Gijon, in northern Spain. We took Silversea's free shuttle service between the ship and city center, about 20 minutes. On larger ships, I've had to pay for shuttle service, as much as 8 euros per person (about US$10).
We were impressed by the city itself, but we were blown away by the tradition of cider pouring. My understanding is that you only buy cider by the bottle in so-called siderias, or cider houses. That's when the show begins. The bartender uncorks the bottle, lifts it above his head and pours the cider into a glass below his waist, both arms fully extended. Missing the glass: remarkably little.

Situada en el extrarradio de Gijón, concretamente en la parroquia de Cabueñes, la Universidad Laboral de Gijón, más conocida como La Laboral o Laboral Ciudad de la Cultura, es el edificio más grande de España (270.000 m2) y uno de los espacios más creativos y monumentales de Asturias. Fue construida entre los años 1946 y 1956, y está declarada, desde 2016, Bien de Interés Cultural en la categoría de Monumento.
El origen de este magnífico edificio se halla en un grave accidente laboral ocurrido en una mina de la cuenca del Caudal. Las autoridades de la época decidieron proyectar un edificio que pudiera atender a 1.000 alumnos huérfanos de mineros y que contara con las dependencias necesarias para el desarrollo de su vida estudiantil: residencia, escuela, talleres industriales, granja, instalaciones deportivas, campos de cultivo, etc.
Fue durante el transcurso de las obras cuando el Ministerio de Trabajo decidió crear las Universidades Laborales, por lo que el edificio cambió su propósito inicial y acabó transformándose en Universidad Laboral de Gijón. Su gestión fue encomendada a los jesuitas con el apoyo de las monjas clarisas.
En su momento acogió el instituto de educación secundaria más grande de España, con 3.000 alumnos, pero en los años 80 el edificio fue prácticamente abandonado, hasta que en los años 90 el Gobierno del Principado decide recuperarlo y constituir la fundación Ciudad de la Cultura. Así que la rehabilitación se hizo entre 2001 y 2007, y hoy la ciudad de Gijón puede presumir de tener un espacio monumental con un amplio abanico de ofertas culturales.

Situated on the outskirts of Gijón in the parish of Cabueñes, the Universidad Laboral de Gijón – more commonly referred to as La Laboral or Laboral Ciudad de la Cultura – is Spain’s largest building at a whopping 270,000 m2 and is one of the most creative and monumental spaces in Asturias. La Laboral was built between 1946 and 1956 and was declared a monument of cultural interest under the Spanish heritage register in 2016.
La Laboral was originally built in response to a tragic mining accident in the region. The authorities of the time decided to create a place that could look after 1,000 mining orphans. The children would have access to everything they needed to complete their education: accommodation, schooling, industrial workshops, a farm, sporting facilities and more.
While the project was under way, the Ministry of Work decided to set up what were known as the Universidades Laborales (an education initiative in Spain targeting working class children). Hence, the building became the Universidad Laboral de Gijón. It was run by the Jesuits with the help of Clarist nuns.
At its peak it was the second largest education institute in Spain with 3,000 pupils on its roll. However, by the 1980s it was almost totally abandoned. The Government of Asturias subsequently established the Ciudad de la Cultura (City of Culture) foundation in the 1990s and the building was overhauled between 2001 and 2007. Today, the city of Gijón can boast having a truly monumental space which provides a whole host of cultural services.

Exploring Gijón in Spain - P&O VENTURA CRUISE VLOG
Day 2 of our cruise started very early for me.
I wanted to get as much as possible out of the port of Gijon and see as much of it as possible.
Yes, I am one of those people who got Duracell batteries up they bum and just can't stop. The way I look at it is - I most likely won't come here ever again so I want to explore as much as possible and then I can relax on the ship.
Gijon was warm and lovely to walk around, not massive so I feel like we did see a lot of it.

Summer Arrives in Gijón, Northern Spain / Filmed on the Fuji XT-3
Yesterday I spent the day on Playa de San Lorenzo, the main city beach in Gijón, Asturias (northern Spain).
The surf wasn't great, but the sun was out and so were the locals. And today, I am sunburnt but filled with that exhausted sense of relaxation that comes with a day by the sea.
How lucky I am to be able to call this home.
