Banjul is the capital city of the Gambia, a small West African country bordered by Senegal. The city sits on an island where the Gambia River meets the Atlantic Ocean. Its colonial buildings include the National Museum, dedicated to Gambian culture and history. Vendors at the lively Albert Market sell colorful textiles and local produce. The city's main entrance is marked by the immense, columned Arch 22 gateway.

Inside The Biggest Market In Banjul ???????? Royal Albert Market #Gambia Africa Ep.9
Albert Market is in Banjul on Liberation Avenue and is the capital's main urban market. It was named after Queen Victoria's husband Prince Albert Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. It is essentially an emporium that is pungent, lively and bustling with a large selection of vividly designed fabrics, carved wooden masks and fresh produce which is packed to the brim. All this is laid out within a labyrinth of alleys and hundreds of rickety stalls and purpose built shops. It is open from 8am to 7pm.

It is the centre of the eponymous administrative division, which is home to an estimated 400,000 residents, making it The Gambia's largest and most densely populated metropolitan area. Banjul is on St Mary's Island (Banjul Island), where the Gambia River enters the Atlantic Ocean. The population of the city proper is 31,301, with the Greater Banjul Area, which includes the City of Banjul and the Kanifing Municipal Council, at a population of 413,397 (2013 census). The island is connected to the mainland to the west and the rest of Greater Banjul Area via bridges. There are also ferries linking Banjul to the mainland at the other side of the river. From 19th Century to 1973, the city was known as Bathurst.

This nation is completely surrounded by Senegal and the Atlantic Ocean on all sides, and it's appropriately nicknamed The Smiling Coast of Africa. Seriously, people smile at you from every angle here!
We've spent the past 2.5 days here and it's been a very interesting experience to say the least. I love the people and the nature -- they are both world class. But something doesn't feel right to me about the society, which I explain in this video.

The Distance from Dakar to Banjul is about 309km. A roadtrip takes about 5-6 hours depending on the time you leave Dakar. To avoid getting stuck in Traffic on your way out of Dakar,Senegal start early. The distance from Dakar to Amdallai Border is 283Km. After the Amdallai border you will drive inside Gambia for 20km To Barra Ferry crossing, take the Ferrry across the Gambia River TO Banjul. The Ferry crossing is about 35 minutes. The cost of the Ferry ticket is 25 Dalasi ($0.5) per individual and 600 Dalasi ($12) per car inclusive of the Driver.

De Albert Market in Banjul, één van de populairste toeristische bezienswaardigheden van Gambia. Het is niet de grootste markt maar wel de bekendste. In de smalle, kleurrijke straatjes is van alles te zien en te beleven. De marktkraampjes liggen vol met kleding, huishoudelijke artikelen, schoenen, stoffen en daarnaast is er veel groente, fruit en ander etenswaar te vinden. De ‘domoda’ is zeker het proberen waard. Het is een gerecht van kip of vis geserveerd met pindasaus en rijst. Erg lekker! Wil je een souvenir meenemen voor het thuisfront? Dan moet je zeker een kijkje nemen bij de kraampjes met het Afrikaanse houtsnijwerk. Hierbij kan je denken aan houten maskers en trommels. Op de markt is iedereen vrolijk en vriendelijk, er wordt veel gelachen en iedereen maakt tijd voor een praatje. Gambia wordt niet voor niets The Smiling Coast of Africa genoemd. Tijdens je verblijf in Banjul, Gambia, mag een bezoek aan de Albert Market niet ontbreken.
