A Look at New York's Largest Development Ever - $20BN Hudson Yards

Hudson Yards is a real estate development under construction in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. It is the largest private real estate development in the United States by square footage, and has been compared to Roppongi Hills, a Japanese development similar in scale and use. Upon completion, 13 of the 16 planned structures will sit on a platform built over the West Side Yard, a storage yard for Long Island Rail Road trains. The first of its two phases comprises a public green space and eight structures that contain residences, a hotel, office buildings, a mall, and a cultural facility. The second focuses on residential space, along with an office building and a school.

Related Companies is the primary developer, and Oxford Properties is a major equity partner. Mitsui Fudosan owns a 92.09 percent stake in 55 Hudson Yards, and a 90 percent stake in 50 Hudson Yards. The architectural firm Kohn Pedersen Fox designed the master plan for the site, and architects including Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill, Thomas Heatherwick, Roche-Dinkeloo, and Diller Scofidio + Renfro contributed designs for individual structures. Major office tenants include or will include fashion company Tapestry, consulting firm BCG, and Alphabet subsidiary Sidewalk Labs.

The site of Hudson Yards was initially intended for other developments, most notably in the early 2000s as the site of the West Side Stadium, during the New York City bid for the 2012 Summer Olympics. The plans for Hudson Yards were developed after the failure of the West Side Stadium. Construction began in 2012 with the groundbreaking for 10 Hudson Yards, and the first phase is expected to be finished by March 15, 2019. Both phases are projected to be complete by 2024. Agreements between various entities including the local government, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), and the state of New York made the development possible.

The special zoning for Hudson Yards (an area roughly bound by 30th Street in the south, 41st Street in the north, 11th Avenue in the west, and Eighth Avenue in the east) further incentivized the building of other large-scale projects. Hudson Yards is adjacent but unrelated to Manhattan West, 3 Hudson Boulevard, and The Spiral.

New York' Central Park Tower: US' Future Tallest Skyscraper&World's Tallest Residential Building

New York's Central Park Tower: USA' Future Tallest Skyscraper&World's Tallest Residential Building

The tower is located on West 57th Street, New York City’s most prestigious corridor, with Central Park directly to the north and the dynamic hub of Columbus Circle to the west. Extell pioneered what is now known as Billionaire’s Row with One57, the first supertall tower on 57th Street. Located above the Park Hyatt‘s five-star flagship hotel, the record- breaking glass tower overlooking Central Park is home to the most expensive residence ever sold in New York City at $100.5 million. At the base of the building will be the new 320,000-square-foot, seven-story Nordstrom NYC Flagship store that represents the company’s biggest and best statement of the brand

Central Park Tower was designed by Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture (AS+GG), a firm dedicated to the design of high-performance, energy-efficient, striking architecture on an international scale. AS+GG has collaborated with clients across the globe to design nine of the world’s tallest and highest-performing buildings. Currently, AS+GG is responsible for the design of the next world’s tallest building, Jeddah Tower now under construction in Saudi Arabia, as well Wuhan Greenland Center and Greenland Tower Chengdu, both currently under construction in China.

The building’s façade distinguishes itself from its surroundings by combining elements of glass, satin-finished stainless steel, and light-catching vertical and horizontal details that accentuate the interplay of texture and light. At a height of 300 feet from the street, the tower cantilevers to the east, creating Central Park views for all north-facing residences.

The interiors of these grand residences are designed by Rottet Studio, whose credits include The Surrey Hotel in Manhattan, The St. Regis in Aspen, The Beverly Hills Hotel Presidential Bungalows and The River Oaks in Houston.

Starting on the 32nd floor, the 179 ultra-luxury two-to-eight-bedroom residences range in size from 1,435 square feet to over 17,500 square feet.

Located within the tallest residential tower ever built will be one of the world’s most exclusive private clubs, Central Park Club. The Club will offer approximately 50,000 square feet of thoroughly curated luxury amenities spread across three floors, each location providing a unique experience complemented by five-star service.

The first club level, located on the 14th floor, will feature a residents’ lounge with billiards, screening and function rooms. The centerpiece of this floor will be a 15,000-square-foot outdoor terrace with a spectacular 60-foot swimming pool, cabanas, bar, screening wall, food and beverage service, and an outdoor children’s playground. The health and wellness center on the 16th floor will include a 63-foot indoor swimming pool, state-of-the art fitness center, basketball court, regulation squash court, sauna, steam and treatment rooms. The Club will culminate on the 100th floor at an elevation of over 1,000 feet. The plans for this remarkable space are yet to be revealed.

This Skyscraper Could Become America's Tallest Building

Located just north of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, east of Fifth Avenue between 51st and 52nd Streets, Tower Fifth will rank as the tallest building by roof height not only in New York City, but in the Western Hemisphere. Climbing 1,556 feet above Manhattan, the 1.3-million-gross-square-foot tower creates a new paradigm for how a supertall structure meets the street and interacts with its neighbors. Its ground floor glass-enclosed public galleria spans the entire block, framing views of St. Patrick’s Cathedral while extending the civic realm into the building footprint, leading visitors to shops, a food hall, and an auditorium. At the top of the tower, the city’s highest observatory grants unprecedented views and features an array of unique experiential, cultural, and entertainment experiences within a public observatory. The office floors feature 960,000 square feet of tenant space and amenities focused on wellness. Tower Fifth is wrapped in an innovative, energy-efficient Closed Cavity Facade system which reduces solar heat gain by more than 70%. The Stunning Skyscrapers of New York City

The skyscrapers of New York City are spectacular. The silhouette created by Manhattan's tall buildings is instantly recognizable.

New York City is home to more than 200 buildings that soar over 500 feet or higher into the sky, roughly double that of any other US city. You can appreciate the skyline's grandeur from the observation decks atop the Empire State Building, One World Trade Center, or Top of the Rock; or revel in their beauty from street level.

Manhattan is a special place for skyscrapers as the bedrock underlying much of Manhattan is a strong, competent metamorphic rock that is well suited for the foundations of tall buildings.

repost due to overlooked but tabulated data.. thanks RR

Historically (late 1800's) the term Skyscraper referred to buildings that were between 10-20 stories. Modern sources typically define skyscrapers as being either 100m(328ft) or 150m(492ft), however there is no universally accepted definition. The most extensive database concerning worldwide building information generally uses 100m(328ft) as the standard, therefore we used the 100m marker.

There is even greater variation in the definition of the term Highrise. Considering the fact that it is becoming increasingly rare for any building shorter than 45m(approximating150ft) to be categorized as a highrise we use the marker of 45m to denote highrise. In generally there are significant inconsistencies in the databases concerning this designation (not only among cities within the same country, but intracity also ). More recently, most new buildings under 45m(approx 150ft) are generally categorized as Lowrise.

Usually City A will literally have hundreds of buildings between 31-45m classified as highrise ; City B will literally have hundreds of buildings between 31-45m (with the same floor count) all classified as lowrise. Oddly, City A will have also have a hundred buildings in the same range (31m-45m) classified as lowrise. The amount of variations in this datafield is remarkable.

Moreover, there should be a global push amongst those who maintain skyline databases to standardize the terms used in the industry.

For all practical purpose, I suggest adding two new terms to the lexicon; Skyrise and also Starscraper instead of supertall.

Lowrise for buildings under 49m
Highrise for buildings 50m to 99m
Skyrise for buildings 100m - 149m
Skyscraper for buildings 150m-299m
Starscraper for buildings 300m and greater
