Vanha Kauppahalli - That's the Helsinki Food market to you and I - Finland Travel guide

Needing to sample some fine Finnish cuisine or just have a quick lunch in the centre of Helsinki? You can't go wrong with the beautiful Vanha Kauppahalli. The old Helsinki food market can be found at Eteläranta near Market Square. The construction of this one storey building started in 1888. However, due to problems with cement delivery, the hall was not opened to the public until 1889. Join me while I have a look around this magnificent food market and try to decide what I will have for lunch.

I'm The Wondering Englishman - I spend my days wondering what places are like and what wonders they may have to offer. My YouTube Channel focuses on Travel content - taking in the world's wonders. HELSINKI'S TRADITIONAL CENTRAL MARKET - A FOODIE'S DREAM - FINLAND 4K 2023

Harborside market open year-round with food stalls, handicrafts & a heated café tent in winter.

This is an open bazaar where you can find a variety of food and souvenirs. It's a typical place to enjoy seafood and fast food options. Although I didn't try the food myself, it seems like a nice place to spend time and enjoy the fresh air.

One of the places that you need to visit when you are in Helsinki. There are many food stalls and souvenirs. I tried one of the stalls named Sun Market Finland, and ordered their Salmon Soup. The soup tastes good, the taste of the salmon is strong and the rye bread is a good compliment for this dish.

Best Foods to Try in Helsinki, Finland

As the capital of Finland, Helsinki is a Nordic foodie heaven full of delicious foods to try, including Finnish staples like mushrooms, berries, salmon, and rye bread. Finns are known for their love of nature so you'll find that the culinary scene here emphasizes where food comes from and how it's produced. In this video, I'm sharing seven of the best foods and restaurants in Helsinki from budget-friendly to splurge-worthy. We visit a sustainable restaurant called Ultima where you can experience the future of food production. The best cinnamon buns in Helsinki (with the most picturesque view) are at Cafe Regatta. If you want to splurge on an unforgettable meal of Finnish fine dining with a twist then dinner at Finnjävel is a must. You also have to try a bowl of salmon soup, which is traditional Finnish fare, and the bouillabaisse at the Market Hall which sells out early. You can even dine in a former prison that's been converted to a restaurant and hotel. If you fancy a fresh and tasty döner in Helsinki then the best is at Döner Harju. Check out the rest of our Finland series for more videos about the best things to see and do in Helsinki and Lapland, including trying lots more traditional Finnish foods.

What to eat in Helsinki and Finland
What to eat in Helsinki? What are the most famous products that need to be tasted if you visit Helsinki? In this guide to the typical cuisine of Helsinki and Finland we will take you to the discovery of the things that must necessarily be tasted during a trip to Helsinki.
A few years ago someone said Finland was the worst place for foodies but, despite the common thinking, that’s not true at all. When in Helsinki and Finland you need to be ready to eat only local and fresh food, sourced locally and seasonal to discover a world of mouthwatering food, simply cooked and presented. I’ve put together a small food guide on what to eat in Helsinki and Finland and a few resources for food travellers like myself.
What to eat in Helsinki and in Finland: a list of things to try

The world’s best supermarket is in Finland! | Sushi tasting

Citymarket from the small town of Järvenpää in Finland was crowned the world’s best supermarket. You can check news articles about it in several languages below.
We got so excited and went to find out why this shop is so good.
First of all their organising system was great and we were able to find all needed goods quite fast.
Second, they have restaurant quality sushi!
Third, Santa Claus seems to be a regular customer there. So it must be good :)

Our second day started bright and early as we started exploring Helsinki on foot soon after waking up and eating breakfast. The cool breeze in the morning and lower temperatures made for ideal walking conditions; although, I'm sure Audrey would argue that point, as prefers warmer weather whereas I'm in my element when temperatures are hovering around twenty degrees of less ;)

We couldn't help but notice how quiet and empty the streets were this early in the morning. We could sometimes go an entire block or two with seeing a single other person. On our way to visit Uspenski Orthodox Cathedral, we noticed a park dedicated for dogs and their owners; naturally, as pet lovers, we went to check it out but the dogs weren't as pleased by our presence. This distinct landmark cathedral offers a fantastic vantage point overlooking downtown Helsinki.

From the cathedral we continued to the main train station where we would be meeting one of Audrey's Canadian friends from back home who is studying nursing in Finland. Along the way we walked by several stores selling Finnish souvenirs; several groups of performers entertained pedestrians including a a group busking.

Soon after meeting Audrey's friend, our focus shifted towards Finnish cuisine. Specifically we wanted to try eating Finnish Reindeer meatballs. As we approached Market Square, we noticed a change in atmosphere much different from the quiet neighborhood nearby our hotel. Finnish vendors were selling everything from trinkets to local delicacies. Meanwhile, a sea of people made their way up and down the rows gobbling up delectable delights, shopping and sitting down for coffee. Although the pace was definitely lively it was nowhere near as chaotic as some of the markets we've visited in Asia, such as Jonker Street Night Market in Malacca or the Shilin Market in Taipei.

How did the Reindeer meatballs taste? Well, they weren't nearly as distinct as they thought they would be. I have a lot of experience eating animal meat such as deer, elk and moose having grown up on Vancouver Island. I was expecting the Reindeer to have more of a pronounced and unique taste; however, it was rather nondescript, at least in the form of these meatballs, and I wouldn't have been surprised if somebody told me these were pork or chicken balls. I'm hoping to soon try Reindeer steak which I think may have more of a unique flavor.

Finally, we ended up coming back to Market Square for dinner where we ended up having the same thing; except this time we replaced the Reindeer meatballs with grilled salmon. If I had to choose between the two, the salmon would win hands down. I'm a huge salmon lover (it's probably one of my top 5 favorite foods) and this was grilled to perfection with each piece melting in my mouth.

Overall, our second day in Helsinki was very pleasant. Our plan is to do a bit of island hopping tomorrow along with a day trip to Tallinn, Estonia the following day. Although we don't actually have a lot of time left in Helsinki, I'm sure we'll make the most of it gormandizing on more salmon and hopefully some reindeer steak:

Meidän toinen päivä tutustuen Helsinki, Suomi annamme sinulle kiertue ympäri kaupunkia jotkut ehdottivat asioita keskustan alueella sekä vierailu Kauppatorilta maistella suomalaisia elintarvikkeita, mukaan lukien poro lihapullia, grillattua lohta, perunaa, vihanneksia ja valkosipuli kastike.

Helsinki Market Square Street Food (4K)

We were at Helsinki Market Square in Finland where many vendors were selling grilled anchovies/mackerels. It smelled great and was pretty reasonable at about 10 EURO. Sausages and grilled veggies were available as well.
