The Land of Fire (Azerbaijani: Odlar Yurdu) is a phrase in the Azerbaijani language and an ancient Azerbaijani cultural concept that denoted either the entire Azerbaijan's geographical land or the metaphysical realm of mortals, and later became associated with political sovereignty and cultural symbolism.
The larger concept of Odlar Yurdu is closely associated with civilization and order in classical Azerbaijani philosophy, and has formed the basis for the world view of the Azerbaijani people and nations influenced by them since at least the Bronze Age

Azerbaijan or as it is known as the Land of Fire was kind of an unknown to me as a travel destination and so I decided to travel there and spend a month exploring the country from the hyper-modern capital city of Baku to the peculiar exclave republic of Nakhchivan. The journey begins at a site where they discovered several prehistoric rock carvings not too far from Baku.
The history of Azerbaijan stretched back to prehistoric times which is evidenced by the rock carvings in Gobustan and that's where our journey begins in the video. From the empty vastness of the land to humans existing throughout prehistoric times, to the discovery of fire that sprawled up all kinds of civilization, and then there was oil and that where the intro ends and our journey in modern-day Azerbaijan begins.
The video will take you through some of the most incredible sights in the hyper-modern city of Baku before making our way out into the mountains in the Azerbaijani Caucasus.
For this video, I wanted to show you the crazy development that came after the discovery of oil in the country, and you will notice many reference to the fact throughout the video such as the footages of the oil pumps and the excessive use of moving car footages after the intro. The journey picks up from there and you will see several footages of all the beautiful landscapes, architectures, and the people I met during the trip, all rapidly cut in a way that should help you imagine what Azerbaijan is like.

THE LAND OF FIRE (AZERBAIJAN)
They call this country 'The Land of Fire,' which is a curious nickname, but it comes with an incredible backstory. Throw in some carpets, crude oil, incredible architecture and beautiful mountain villages, and you have a wonderful for place for a kilted adventure.
I travelled to Azerbaijan in August 2018, and I'm itching to return. Until then, this video will have to do.

Our main tips for travellers to Azerbaijan:
1. Be ready for loads of food. And most important, DELICIOUS food. Meat lovers can feel in heaven there as Azerbaijani lamb is something to die for. It is grown in the fields and meadows all around Azerbaijan,
and people there learnt to cook it in many ways during centuries.
2. Go to local markets (bazars). Azeri people love markets and you can see a lot of local life there. Meet local people, try traditional food and drinks, experience Azerbaijani hospitality.
3. Nine out of eleven existing climate zones are present in Azerbaijan. From tropical climate in Southern Azerbaijan to mountains in the North, and the Caspian seaside on the east. Ad advice to plan your trip between May to September when weather is nice.
If you can not tolerate heat, it is better to avoid July and August as those months may become really hot.
4. Transportation. Public transport as well as taxis, Ubers, Bolt are available and are extremely cheap. And if you would like to travel outside Baku, rent a car. Since the country is producing oil itself, the petrol is really cheap.
So enjoy a drive around :)
5. If you visit in the summer, enjoy Caspian seaside too. There are oil production facilities near Baku, therefore, it is better to visit the beaches outside Baku because they are cleaner. Water is very salty because Caspian sea consists of sea water which is landlocked and does not have any natural exit to the ocean.

Here is a quick video from our short trip in #Azerbaijan :
Day 1: #Baku, Free Walking tour, local restaurant, night walk (w/ Mary). For free walking tour - you can book thru online or go directly to the meeting place in KFC/Pizza Hut at Fountain Square. You can check their fb page & website for more details.
Day 2: #Nakhchivan tour (solo) with Natig Travel. Check Natig Travel, if you want to visit Nakhchivan with guide. During my visit Natig is my guide, he is great & his nephew as well. I enjoyed with them.
Day 3: #Zarnava-Mushkamir-Gandov #Hike + Eco-tour. We joined Camping Azerbaijan's group for hiking. They are great. Their group is the first hiking/tour company in Azerbaijan way back in 2014. We visited a village & had our organic lunch there. Great lunch & what I love the most - we met the children! We too had a great dinner in other village. You can check Camping Azerbaijan's fb page for more of their events.
Day 4: we took rest & flight back to Dubai. Thankful for the people we met in our hostel too. You've been part of our journey.
