From Pagan Nomads to Christian Knights // King Stephen & The Birth of Hungary

Vivat Matthias!

The medieval era of King Matthias came to life as thousands gathered recently in Kolozsvár/Cluj to celebrate the 576th birthday of Mátyás (Matthias Corvinus), the great Hungarian King. During the torchlight parade, a couple of thousand people bearing some 600 torches marched from the Reformed Church of Farkas Street to the Matthias Corvinus House, one of Kolozsvár’s oldest buildings, the house where the King was born. Just as they are today, in King Matthias’ times, these marches were community building events, attracting locals from all walks of life. Soldiers and beggars, craftsmen, aristocrats and tenants all joined in the procession.

Matthias Church 14 FACTS Budapest Hungary | The Old Church of Our Lady History

According to historians a church referred to as Church of Mary stood at the place of the current edifice that was founded by Szent István (Saint Stephen) the first king of Hungary in 1015.

There’s no archaeological evidence of this early church though.

According to church tradition, it was originally built in Romanesque style in the year 1015 and is of immense importance from architectural and religious perspective.

Not much remained of the original building due to numerous expansions, wars and reconstructions.

Very little remains of the original church, only the foundations, columns and some walls date back to the thirteenth century.

Visit the bell tower and the Museum of Ecclesiastical Art (Egyházművészeti Múzeum) in the crypt.

Address: Szentháromság tér 2., District I., (Buda Castle)

Check the Official Website for accurate and updated information through the following link:

Keep in mind that the opening hours may change because of religious ceremonies.

St. Stephen's Basilica - Budapest Hungary

Come along for a great tour of the St. Stephen's Basilica in Budapest Hungary.

We Celebrated St. Stephen's Day in Budapest, Hungary!

St. Stephen's Day is one of the best days to be in Budapest, and we were lucky enough to get to celebrate this amazing holiday with the Hungarian people! For those who don't know, St. Stephen's Day is essentially Hungary's Fourth of July or Independence Day. The day represents the foundation of the country of Hungary as we know it today, and the Hungarian people celebrate on August 20th every year.

It was a day that was jam-packed with fun, from the Air and Water Show and Military Parade, to the Street of Hungarian Flavors and the spectacular fireworks.

Celebrating St. Stephen's Day in Budapest, Hungary was one of our favorite days ever!
