1945: US Army Returns Holy Relic to Hungary

On August 19, 1945, five American soldiers were on a mad rush through the blizzard in the Austrian Alps to bring back holiest relic of Hungary in time for St. Stephen's day. The Holy Right Hand of St. Stephen had been hidden near Salzburg before the end of WW2 by members of the Hungarian Arrow Cross militia. Its unexpected and miraculous return on the day of St. Stephen brought joy and gave hope to the suffering Hungarian people.

In this exclusive Cold War Budapest mini-documentary, you will hear the five American soldiers (stationed in Hungary as members of the Allied Control Commission) tell the story in their own words. The rare audio is complemented by just as rare images and documents, all from of the estate of the late Lt. Col. George Kovach. In addition, you can see original footage of the religious procession that took place on August 20, 1945, with members of the Catholic church carrying around the newly returned relic on the streets of Budapest.

If you visit Budapest, don’t forget to book our exclusive walking tour to hear much, much more about the Cold War history of Hungary.

Exploring Kaposvár and Somogy County with István, a Király Rock Opera | Hungary's Best-Kept Secrets

Well, now, let me tell you a story about a place that's dear to my heart: Somogy county in Hungary. You may not have heard of it, but I assure you, it's a place worth visiting on your European adventures. And where better to start than Kaposvár, the vibrant capital of Somogy, where the past and the present intertwine like a tangled ball of yarn?

As you stroll through the charming Old Town, with its cobblestone streets and medieval buildings, you can almost feel the ghosts of the past whispering in your ear. And if you're lucky enough to visit the iconic Heroes' Square, you'll find yourself surrounded by statues of Hungary's most famous historical figures, as if they've come to life to tell you their stories.

But Somogy county has more to offer than just history. There's also the stunning Lake Balaton, a sparkling jewel in the heart of the region, where you can swim, sail, and fish to your heart's content. And for those who love a good adventure, the Mecsek Mountains are a rugged and majestic destination that will leave you breathless.

And of course, no visit to Somogy county would be complete without a stop in Fonyód, a charming lakeside town that's the perfect place to end your journey. Here, you can soak up the stunning views of the lake, wander through the town center with its lively shops and restaurants, and enjoy a variety of water sports and other activities.

But perhaps the most unique attraction in Somogy county is the Szent László Nemzeti Emlékhely, a national memorial site dedicated to Saint Ladislaus, one of Hungary's most revered kings. This sacred site allows visitors to immerse themselves in the life and legacy of this saintly monarch, with its beautiful grounds and chapel serving as a peaceful tribute to his memory.

In short, Somogy county and Kaposvár are a hidden gem in the heart of Europe, a place where the past and present merge to create a tapestry of experiences that will stay with you for a lifetime. So why not start planning your travel to Hungary today and experience the region's rich culture, breathtaking natural beauty, and warm hospitality, just as I did?
