Fried Pork Cutlet(Tonkatsu) & Must Try RAMEN in Tokyo Japan

Yes, I'm finally in Japan!
My first meal in Japan was at a tonkatsu pork restaurant, and I could see why it was highly rated. The pork was perfectly crispy and so juicy. I really loved the pork over rice, and you can't go wrong with the tonkatsu sandwich.

After 3 pork dishes, I was in the mood for some ramen. I ordered 2 bowls: Yuzuratan ramen and Yuzu Tsuyu Tsukemen (dip ramen). I really loved how in the spicy ramen, the noodles just soaked up all the broth.

Finally, since I was in Harajuku, I had to end the night with some dessert. Harajuku is known for crepes, so I went to a location that had an assortment of choices. I got the blueberry cheesecake crepe. Yeah... maybe a bit heavy after the 2 dinners I finished. Anyhow, it was amazingly crispy, and the tartness of the blueberries in combination with the soft cheesecake made it the perfect combination!

Best Japanese Tonkatsu - GOLDEN BOAR Gourmet Vs. Old-Style Food in Tokyo, Japan!

Which Japanese tonkatsu would you prefer to try? Or try them both in Tokyo!
Subscribe for more videos►
T-shirts for sale here►

Tonkatsu is a Japanese food that has international influence - it was originally a dish inspired from a European fried meat cutlet like Wiener Schnitzel, but it’s now one of the common Japanese dishes. Usually a pork cutlet is dipped in egg and flour, coated in breadcrumbs, and deep fried to a golden crisp. Tonkatsu is served with rice, cabbage salad, and a tonkatsu sauce which typically consists of Japanese worcestershire.

Just like with all types of Japanese food, there’s everything from fast food restaurants serving tonkatsu, to gourmet high end restaurants serving Tonkatsu.

So for this video I wanted to taste two of the best tonkatsu’s in Tokyo, eat them back to back, and compare their differences and decided on a winner… since they were so different, it ended up being a little harder to compare than I had first thought!

1. Butagumi Restaurant (豚組) - Gourmet tonkatsu, rated as one of the best
Golden boar from Hyogo
Ryuka-ton from Okinawa
Total price - 6,500 JPY ($58.70) for 2

Butagumi Restaurant (豚組) is a fancy and gourmet tonkatsu restaurant, but at the same time it’s very friendly, situated in an old Japanese house environment. One of the best things about Butagumi Restaurant (豚組) is that you can choose your specific breed of pig from the menu. Their tonkatsu is incredibly high quality and extremely delicate. Amazing.

2. Tonkatsu Tonki (とんき 目黒店) - One of the most legendary and oldest tonkatsu restaurants in Tokyo
Fatty tonkatsu
Total price - 3,800 JPY ($34.32) for 2

Tonkatsu Tonki (とんき 目黒店) is one of the most well known restaurants in Tokyo for tonkatsu, that’s been an institution in Tokyo for over 70 years. They make a much different type of tonkatsu, much rougher and the type of tonkatsu that you can chow down on, and add loads of sauce and mustard to it. One of the best things about Tonkatsu Tonki (とんき 目黒店) for me is that you can see the entire kitchen and watch your tonkatsu being made.

The Japanese tonkatsu face-off decision was so hard… and I came to 2 conclusions.

For taste - there’s no doubt Butagumi Restaurant (豚組) wins for me.
For style and ambiance - I really loved Tonkatsu Tonki (とんき 目黒店).

I think you just have to try them both when you’re in Tokyo, Japan!

This is behind the counter at a local family-owned Japanese fried pork cutlet Tonkatsu restaurant in Tokyo Asakusa, Japan. This tokyo hidden food gem opened in 1972, in the quiet back streets of Asakusa and is a favorite among the locals in the area. It’s run by a 2nd generation owner who’s carried on his father’s delicious fried tonkatsu recipe, a deep-fried pork cutlet coated with panko to while also maintaining the shop's hometown atmosphere for all its customers, truly capturing the essence of the neighborhood. It's truly a local place where everyone knows each other. Their Japanese food specialty of various Tonkatsu and pork dishes can also be enjoyed with other dishes like hanbagu, Japanese hamburger patty. A truly unique Japanese cuisine food experience worth trying, especially if you want that hometown vibe.

How To Make Perfect Tonkatsu | Japanese Pork Cutlet | とんかつの作り方

Tonkatsu is a Japanese crumbed pork cutlet. A little like a German or Australian schnitzel, tonkatsu is one of the most popular forms of yōshoku (Western food incorporated into Japanese cuisine). You can find it in many forms – as curry, sandwiches, rice bowls etc. – but its most pure form is as a straight tonkatsu. Just the cutlet, served with shredded cabbage, a thick Worcestershire-like tonkatsu sauce, rice and miso soup on the side.

There’s a bit of an art to making a great tonkatsu, and here’s how you do it.

THE SPICIEST RAMEN in Tokyo at Karashibi Kikanbo - DEVIL LEVEL Japanese Food!

Subscribe for more videos►
T-shirts for sale here►

Karashibi Miso Ramen Kikanbo is known for serving the spiciest bowl of ramen you can eat in Tokyo, Japan, and not only is it insanely spicy, you’ll also find that it’s one of the most flavorful bowls of ramen you’ll ever eat as well.

They have two shops, the one of the corner serves only Tsukemen, a style of Japanese ramen where the noodles are dry and you dip them in the sauce. For the traditional bowl of ramen, you walk around the corner to the side and that’s the shop you’re looking for.

Like most ramen restaurants in Tokyo, you enter to a vending machine and choose your bowl of ramen, pay and get a ticket. There are two different spice levels to choose from, chili 1-5 and Sichuan pepper 1-5, 5 being the strongest which is called Devil Level!

I decided to go Devil Level all the way, both chili and Sichuan pepper. Price - 1500 JPY ($13.60) for my bowl. From the top bowl, you pay an extra 200 Yen due to adding so much more spices.

First of all, the Japanese food miso ramen was outstanding, the flavor of the broth was incredibly delicious. On my first bite, what hit me hard was the Sichuan pepper, that made my mouth start tingling and made it hard for me to control my mouth or even talk! The Devil Level chili was not too bad for me, but it was the huge amount of Sichuan chili that almost did me in.

You don’t have to order Devil Level, you can order whatever level you like, but the ramen at Tokyo’s Karashibi Miso Ramen Kikanbo is sure to blow you away with insane flavor!

Japan Behind the Counter at a local Japanese restaurant in Tokyo called Bulldog with the most popular menu item, Menchi Katsu which is Japanese breaded and deep-fried ground meat patty but they also serve many other fried items. This is not a Japan Day in the Life the video, but it captures what happens behind the scenes of a local japanese restaurant setting up in the morning and getting ready for lunch. This Tokyo Restaurant, Bulldog, is a traditional Japanese Western influenced style restaurant that usually has customer lines almost longer than its history. Just a 3 minutes walk away from Oimachi Station, this shop was opened post war in 1949 in what was considered a black market area but evolved over time and now situated in this historic hidden backstreet alleyway known as Higashi Koji Shotengai amongst other bars and restaurants with a similar history. The owner. Suzuki san or as everyone refers to him Sensei which means Teacher in English is a second generation shop owner as it was passed down from his father. This is a half a day in his life a Japanese restaurant owner.

Ginza Bairin originates in the Ginza neighborhood of Tokyo Japan and this USA location makes the best katsu on this side of the pacific. The most popular item here is the classic Tonkatsu set with juicy pork and crispy breadcrumbs. I also really like the Katsudon: pork cutlet on a bed of rice and coated with egg. How to Make Katsudon | カツ丼 | Japanese Pork Cutlet Rice Bowl

Katsudon is one of the most popular ways of eating tonkatsu in Japan, but it hasn’t quite caught on abroad as much. I think it’s because of the idea of putting a crispy fried thing into a liquid that softens it isn’t often done in Western cooking. The idea, however, is quite common in Japanese cuisine and it is done so that the breading will absorb the flavour of the liquid while softening to a sticky (ネチョネチョ), silky (ネバネバ) texture.

Japanese Pork Cutlet (Tonkatsu) of Yayoi Tokyo, Japan.

Asakusa Pork Cutlet Yayoi was founded in 1940 by the grandparents of the current proprietress. The restaurant has a history that will celebrate its 82nd anniversary as of 2023; the store was damaged in the Tokyo Air Raid of 1945, but the grandmother continued to operate in a prefabricated building while waiting for her grandfather, who was off to war, to return home.

The store's name comes from the fact that her grandfather was born in March of Yayoi, his name was Yataro, and the store opened in March of Yayoi as well.
