Visiting Papillon’s Devil’s island - French Guiana 2018

Papillon’s world famous Devil’s island at ”Îles du Salut” - in French Guiana (South America). Known in English as the Salvation Islands, these little Islands were anything but ”salvation” for the prisoners sent here from the French mainland by Emperor Napoleon III and the subsequent French governments. This was the French smaller version of other more famous death camps. From 1852 to 1947, some 80,000 prisoners died from disease, inhumane conditions and the guillotine on these sad isles. So much for égalité, liberté and fraternité.

The three tiny former prison islands consist of Île du Diable, Île Royale and Île St Joseph and thanks to shark infested waters they were considered escape proof and extra appropriate for political prisoners: including the French/Jewish Alfred Dreyfus - wrongly convicted of treason in 1894.

The most famous prisoner though was Henry Charrière, who became known for his epic tale of nine remarkable escapes from French Guiana’s infamous prison camps. Nicknamed Papillon (Butterfly) for a tattoo on his chest, Charrière claims that after being wrongly convicted of murder he escaped from Îles du Salut by floating toward the mainland on a sack full of coconuts and cut his way through harsh malarial jungles to flee towards freedom eastward. Papillon is portrayed by Steve McQueen in a 1973 Hollywood version of his life also starring a young Dustin Hoffman in thick glasses

French Guiana - Devils Island

Highlights of our visit to the Iles of Salut or Islands of Savation as they were known by missionaries trying to escape the plague on mainland Guiana. After the Bagne de Cayenne or Penal Colony of Cayenne was built by the French in 1852 the islands collectively became known as Devils Island. The island prision was made famous by the movie Papaillon, starring Steve McQueen, in 1973.

My trip to French Guiana / Devil's Island 2011

French Guiana was dubbed the Green Hell among the prisoners were serving his sentence here.
The Îles du Salut (in English: Salvation Islands) were used as a penal colony from 1852 onwards, earning them a reputation for harshness and brutality.
The islands are today restored and the visit of many tourists.
Foreign Legion also has a small base on one of the islands. They are responsible for maintenance and security.

Devil's Island, French Guiana

Pierre Repooc Productions - URL:

Devil's Island is the smallest island of the three islands making up the Salvation group of islands, in the Atlantic ocean, nine miles off the coast of French Guiana. The island was part of the infamous French penal colony of French Guiana over 101 years, from 1852 to 1953.

Its most famous inmates were Captain Alfred Dreyfus, a wrongly accused political prisoner and the fictional Papillon of a book by the same name, written by Clément Duval.

TRANSCRIPT:

We came upon Devil’s Island, here in the French Guiana. There are three small islands here, the largest being Devil's Island.

I think you might remember it, I do, I think when I was about in high school...

There was a movie starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman called Papillon, and there was a prison on this island where the French had sent some of their prisoners to, as a lot of the Europeans sent prisoners to the desert islands.

This was a prison until the 1950s for about a hundred years. They did have a reputation for the harsh and cruel treatment of the prisoners.

In fact, if they died on the island - what happened is they rang a bell and all the sharks would come up and they would throw the body in the ocean. So there was a lot of inhumane treatment here, and ultimately, the prison did close.

Currently, there is about 50,000 tourists that come to this island annually, and the remains are in pretty good shape. In fact, part of the island they're rebuilding for tourists to stay at. They have a cafeteria and a little museum.

It was kind of like walking down memory lane thinking of this Devil's Island that I'd seen the movie so many years ago.

French Guiana is about six miles off shore and currently the French have donated the land, basically, for the space center that they used to set off rockets and satellites here.

In closing, my wish for you is that you will love abundantly, protect your health, and be adventurous for life. You are beautiful. Let your light shine, Aloha!

The Best passage from Brazil to French Guiana: Devils Island

After recovering from the worst passage ever...across the Atlantic Ocean we were rewarded with the Best sailing passage of our circumnavigation. With strong currents, following seas and just the right amount of wind we flew to French Guiana. Having Tom as crew to enjoy the experience was a real blessing. Devils Island was worth the 2 day stop before we carried on to Suriname.

Sailing French Guiana & Devil's Island – Our FAVORITE Stop, So Far!
While in French Guiana, we spent time in Cayenne, Kourou, and the incredible Iles du Salut, the Triangle Islands which includes the infamous Devil’s Island. Find out exactly why this was our favorite stop of our entire voyage so far!

In the last episode, we sailed 1400 nautical miles in 12 days from Cabedelo, Brazil to Cayenne, French Guiana. We didn’t stay at the marina in Cayenne long, but Cap’n Jack and Scout enjoyed running off the 12 days at sea before we sailed 12 hours to Kourou. In Kourou, we provisioned and rested and enjoyed some spectacular wildlife.

Our sailor friend, Des, of SV Redemption messaged us that he was in a bit of trouble at the Triangle Islands, so we took a short 2-hour sail to help him out. It was my birthday weekend and it was so spectacular, we decided to just stay a few days!

We needed to return to Kourou to pick up some internet so we could work and also to replenish some supplies. We witnessed our second rocket launch, one that actually exploded seconds after takeoff although we didn’t know it at the time.

We returned to Iles du Salut for several days, but on the less than 10 nm passage, we noticed Seefalke dragging a bit. This time it took us almost two extra hours to get there. Once anchored, we took a dive underneath Seefalke to inspect the situation. Her hull was covered in barnacles, which was upsetting after all the time we had spent in Cabedelo having her painted and applying the antifouling. We spent two days scraping the barnacles. But we also found some time to enjoy the Triangle Islands. This is why this became possibly our favorite stop of our entire voyage.
