Fort Myers Beach Today // Condo Resort Hotel update January 2024
Hope you all had a good start to the year!
Today we're on Fort Myers Beach checking in on the rebuilding of the condos, hotels, and resorts after Hurricane Ian in fall of 2022. Gosh, writing 2022 when it's 2024 now is crazy. I haven't filmed this area since April! You can see that video here:
We start the video walking through Times Square (the clock is back!) and then will make our way down the beach from Lynn Hall Beach Park to Bowditch Point Park before turning around, and ending with a drive by the new Margaritaville Beach Resort.
I'm sad to report that although there are some changes, it's not a huge improvement. Pink Shell is open and looking great, but the majority of the condos are not open. The sand restoration and dredging projects are still going on, but as you can see the sand here is hard and there is still debris. I did pick up a few pieces of glass on my walk back as well, so if you visit make sure to wear shoes.

Today we are driving from Bonita over the Big San Carlos Pass Bridge to check out the South side of Fort Myers Beach, the video ends at Margaritaville. This was filmed on the day Hurricane Idalia swept by southwest Florida. Included at the end of the video is the street flooding as I left Fort Myers Beach after I finished by LIVE video ( right before water started coming into Times Square (also see this quick video of how the area around the pier looked as the storm went by

Edison Ford Winter Estates Pressed Pennies | Fort Myers Florida
Day 2 of our Vacation in Fort Myers Florida and we took a break from the beautiful beach to try a local attraction. The Edison Ford Winter Estates is a very interesting place to visit. I will admit our two daughters were not overly thrilled with the history lesson, but my wife and I found it pretty unique. You start in a bit of a museum giving history on Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, then you get to see one of Edison's Labs, and eventually after crossing the street you can see up close their two estates that sit right next to each other on a sprawling grounds with huge trees, beautiful gardens and of course a pressed penny machine was hidden somewhere.

With our Miami vacation coming to a close we were now starting to make our way back towards central Florida. But with a few days still available before having to get back to work we decided to take a scenic trip through the Everglades. We drove along the famous Alligator Alley but no gators were to be found. Eventually we ended our driving on the gulf side of state in Fort Myers. Our hotel was in the middle of a big box store complex and glaring back at us from our room window was a Bass Pro Shop. These stores are really amazing and I could spend hours wondering around inside. My youngest daughter was anxious to walk around after our drive so she came along to check the store out and keep an eye open for penny machines that usually can be found in these stores.

Shell Factory Pressed Pennies | Fort Myers FL
Day 3 of Vacation and it was our last in Fort Myers before we headed north a bit to Sarasota. On this day we visited an interesting placed called the Shell Factory. There was a nice little nature walk with plenty of animals along the way. Then inside the Shell Factory store was a unique selection of items from food, to t-shirts, to art work and everything in between. As always you know if we stopped here there had to be a pressed penny machine somewhere and we made sure to find it before our day was over. Stay safe and enjoy!

Fort Myers Beach Resorts // One year after Hurricane Ian
In April I posted a video showing these condos, resorts, and hotels from the beach side. Today, a month shy of the one year date of Hurricane Ian we are back from the street to get a look at the progress.
I also included a quick walk around Lynn Hall Beach park at the start of this video. This is the parking lot and bathrooms just north of the Pier and Times Square. I also did a walk around the newly reopened Bowditch Point Park at the end of this video. Although it's open, the only thing open is the parking lot. There is debris in the sand and the sand was very hard. It's end of summer, so seaweed season here, and there was plenty at this beach. All restrooms and structures are closed, but portable bathrooms were brought it. You can see the dredges for the sand restoration project going back and fort around the point.

6 months ago I did a video showing the hurricane recovery of the shops and restaurants on Old San Carlos Blvd along Fort Myers Beach. With the 1 year anniversary of Hurricane Ian looming I went back to film an update. More restaurants are open, more buildings have been removed, but overall...a lot looks the same.

Aerial Video of Matanzas Harbor and Matanzas Pass Bridge - Fort Myers Beach, FL
The current Matanzas Pass Bridge opened in 1980, and is 65 feet (20 m) tall, making it the second-tallest bridge in Lee County. The tallest bridge in the county is the first bridge of the Sanibel Causeway, which is 70 feet (21 m) tall. The bridge was built this tall to accommodate the area's large shrimping vessels. The current bridge has two traffic lanes, one for northbound traffic and one for southbound traffic. There is also a pedestrian lane, which is separated from the rest of the bridge by a concrete barrier. The bridge's current blue color was added in 2011, making it resemble the Jewfish Creek Bridge in Key Largo.

???? Tour the Edison Ford Winter Estate Fort Myers FL - Edison Ford Estates Florida
This is the Edison Ford Winter Estates in Fort Myers Florida. This is where Thomas Alva Edison and Henry Ford would come and spend winters. Edison's botanical laboratory is here where he discovered a new way to make rubber.
The estate has over 17,000 plants and flowers including the famous Banyan Tree that spans over an acre now! There are plants from every continent except Antarctica.
There is a hands-on section for kids and plenty of places to sit down and just take in the waterfront views.

Weeki Wachee Springs State Park Pressed Pennies
A few months back I had taken my kids to the Weeki Wachee Springs State Park to see the famous Mermaids and their underwater show. Little did we know there was a lot of other things going on here including a water park, boat tour and of course plenty of sunshine and fresh air. We got to meet one of the mermaids and their underwater show was great with lots of history about the show added in that I really enjoyed. Enjoy!

Bass Pro Shop Pressed Pennies | Gainesville, FL
I've visited a few Bass Pro Shop stores in the past and every time I'm completely blown away by them. You could almost spend the entire day in one of these stores with all they have to offer. Not just is there a ton of merchandise, but they also have big fish tanks, interactive activities, and free classes on things like how to BBQ and many more topics. Plus they almost always have a Pressed Penny machine that is hidden somewhere in this gigantic store. Happy Collecting!
