Camp McClellan Horse Trails AL

Best of America by Horseback host, Tom Seay, takes you to an all new trail riding facility in Anniston, Alabama called Camp McClellan Horse Trails. The local McClellan Chapter of the Back Country Horsemen of Alabama along with the county commission has acquired the land and has built miles of horse trails and a horse campground on what was once part of Fort McClellan's training grounds. They have plans to keep on expanding, adding electric and water hook-ups, and much more.

This is part 3 of my McClellan series The barracks are for sale and a buyer is on the table. The damage from being abounded cant be understated. They might not be around much longer here is a really good look at the state of things. On this video I did a bit of research and was able to indentify areas I missed before.

Memories of Demonstration Company at Fort McClellan, Alabama

The July 2011 video clip is that of my Demonstration Company barracks at Fort McClellan, Alabama, which was closed in 1999 under the Base Realignment and Closing (BRAC) process. This barracks building, built in the 1930s, housed a company supporting the U.S. Army Chemical School. Demonstration Company was my first permanent duty station after my Chemical Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at Fort McClellan. I arrived in the unit in January 1962 after completing basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina followed by AIT. Demonstration Company was then commanded by Major George Fukamato, Chemical Corps. I was a toxic agent handler who worked out of the Toxic Agent Yard on a hill above the ammunition dump. The NCOIC was a Staff Sergeant that was dumber than a rock. A Specialist 5 with the last name of Schneider, who was a Hungarian refugee and a super sharp soldier, really supervised the toxic gas yard. When I arrived, second to Specialist 5 Schneider was a great Specialist 4, George Friel, and third in line was a former Canadian citizen, Private First Class Gary E. Harvey. Also there was a career Specialist 4, an alcoholic who was mostly a lazy BS type of soldier, and another PFC whose name I have forgotten. This seven person group handled all of the toxic chemical agents (mustard agent, phosgene, nerve agents, etc.) used by the Chemical School. Some of my Army service fondest memories are associated with this company. I went from Private (E-2) to Specialist 4 during my just over one year of service in the unit before departing for Infantry Officer Candidate School (OCS) at Fort Benning, Georgia. George Friel departed for OCS shortly after I arrived at the toxic gas yard and retired as a Major General. Gary Harvey followed me to OCS and left the Army as a Major.
