Former Browns Resort - Abandoned - EVERYTHING Left Behind

Abandoned Browns Resort Catskills NY... The Families Lost EVERYTHING !

Brown's Hotel was a nationally known resort complex located in the Borscht Belt area of upstate New York, in the Catskill Mountains. It was one of the largest and most elaborate establishments of its kind during an era when the entire region prospered as a tourist destination. From the 1940s to the 1980s, the hotel was a popular vacation destination for many upper-middle-class families living in the New York City metropolitan area. Jewish-American families were welcomed and even catered to specifically by the hotels in the Borscht Belt during a time period when anti-semitism was prevalent in the hospitality industry. Filling a niche, the area quickly became a mecca for Jewish-American families. Brown's Hotel was located in the hamlet of Loch Sheldrake in the Town of Fallsburg, Sullivan County, New York.

In 1944 in the hamlet of Loch Sheldrake, New York within the Town of Fallsburg, Charles Brown, owner of several hotels, purchased the Black Apple Inn from the Appel family for US $70,000. The Appels had built the hotel in the early 1920s. After making an additional $100,000 in renovations, the 473-room hotel opened as Charles and Lillian Brown's Hotel and Country Club with the phone number Hurleyville 150. The resort became known for the wealthy patrons it attracted, competing against the larger establishments in the area.

In 1978, Charles Brown died That summer, Bob Hope was paid $50,000 to make his sole appearance at a Catskills venue. At that point Lillian Brown, who owned 100% of the company, began gifting small shares of stock to her grandson Bruce.

In 1988, after suffering from financial trouble, Lillian Brown was forced to file for bankruptcy .

On May 30, 1997 at the age of 93, Lillian Brown died in Miami Beach, Florida.

It was Later turned into Grandview Palace Condominiums

In March 2012, the city of Fallsburg had threatened to condemn the condominium due to numerous violations including inoperable sprinklers, fire alarms, and fire doors,] but the owners promised to fix the issues. Because of the fire safety issues, security personnel were ordered to patrol the grounds every 30 minutes in the event that a fire started. On Saturday, April 14, 2012, a guard on routine patrol noticed a wood-burning smell near an old boiler room at 5:05 p.m. but could not locate any smoke. A tenant smelled something burning at 5:20 p.m. and observed smoke rising from the main building but it was not deemed serious enough to call authorities. Around 6:00 p.m., the guard who initially smelled smoke unlocked the boiler room after reports of more smoke, he observed heavy smoke and flames leaping from the room at this time. The initial call came in at 6:06 p.m. but Loch Sheldrake fire chiefs, typically stationed just 1.1 miles east of the condominiums, were out of town for the weekend. The Hurleyville Fire Department five miles south of the property was called into action. The sizable inferno with 20 to 30-foot high flames eventually drew over 43 fire companies and 300 firefighters in what is believed to be the largest fire in Catskills history. Even forest rangers were brought in to battle fires that had burned nearly 20 acres of the Catskills’ characteristic pine forests. The blaze swept through the century-old wooden-frame structure destroying seven of the nine buildings of the complex aided by adjoining hallways between buildings and fueled by propane tank explosions. Over 100 residents were evacuated with no one seriously injured, many victims being relocated to the sports complex at Sullivan County Community College less than two miles southeast of the property. Four firefighters were slightly injured and by Sunday morning the fire had finally been extinguished. Fallsburg town supervisor Steven Vegliante believed that all fire code violations had been resolved before the blaze but insurance companies disagreed. On May 24, it was confirmed by officials that the fire began in the condominium's main building that had completely collapsed, initiating in a boiler room no longer in use in what was once the basement of the Brown's Hotel. The damage was so bad that the county's public safety commissioner Dick Martinkovic stated “We’ll never be able to go in there and put our finger on one specific thing and say that’s what it is.”

Abandoned Pines Resort in the Catskills Ny ... Closed for Over 2 Decades !!! #abandoned #catskills

The Pines is an abandoned Borscht Belt resort that began in the 1930s as a small mission style hotel called Moneka Lodge. The Borscht Belt, refers to a region of the Catskill Mountains that contained many Jewish resort hotels once popular with New York City Jews in the middle of the last century. Its original owners, Silverstein and Weiner, eventually sold the hotel to Harry Cohen and May Schweid in 1946 who renamed the establishment, Pines Hotel. Over the years and under various owners, the Pines grew into one of the largest hotels in the area. However, times changed and Borscht Belt hotels gradually fell out of fashion, leading to the closure of the Pines. Before closing, the resort had expanded to include 400 guest rooms, as well as nightlife, winter sports, and summer recreation facilities.

Recreational options included tennis, skiing, golf, swimming, and other outdoor activities. For entertainment, there were bars, a lounge, ballroom, card room (poker room), and a theater/nightclub. The nightclub hosted acts like Robert Goulet and Buddy Hackett. From what I’m told by those who used to visit the Borscht Belt resorts, many Jewish performers got their start at places like the Pines.

The Pines’ greatest period of expansion was between the 1940s and 1960s. In 1949 a new recreation building was constructed. In 1953 another hotel building was added, increasing the room count by an additional 35 units. The outdoor pool, was built in 1959 at a cost of $75,000. The New York Times described it as being shaped like a whale; however, others seem to think it looks like a heart. The bridge spanning the pool was included to link the cabanas on one side of the pool to the rooftop bar and “Bamboo Room” on the other side. According to the book Catskills Resorts Lost Architecture of Paradise, the hotel even saw such notable staff, as a young Gene Simmons of KISS who worked briefly as a lifeguard at the pool. Architect H.D. Phillips designed a new lobby, card room and indoor pool. They were modernist style structures built between 1959 and 1961. The new lobby was the main entrance where guests would enter through the lower level to check in before ascending the stairs to the second floor lobby that was connected to the indoor pool via the card room. In 1962 a 1,300-seat nightclub called the “Persian Room” was built along with the connected lounge “Wedgwood Room” and formal ballroom known as the “Viceroy Room”. In the mid-1960s convention rooms and additional guest room wings were added. These included the Savoy, Hampshire and Regency wings. Also added in the 60s were a nine-hole golf course and ice skating rink, as well as a ski chalet, and chair lift for skiing.

By the mid-1980s patronage of the Borscht Belt hotels was on the decline. In an effort to remain profitable the Pines Country Estates condos were developed on 40 acres of Pines’ land under the premise that owners would have access to the resort. In addition, the hotel resort hoped to capitalize on new legislation that would allow casino gambling in the Catskills. While the condos were built and still exist, the proposed gambling legislation didn’t pass, putting the final nail in the coffin. The Pines closed its doors in 1998.

After its closure, the Pines was purchased by a group of Hasidic Jews who intended to redevelop the hotel. However, the plans were in vain and the property remains abandoned. While I enjoyed videoing this place, it is pretty trashed. The Viceroy Room, Persian Room, Wedgewood Room, indoor pool, ice skating rink and café have been demolished. In addition, arsonists destroyed the Carleton and Ritz staff buildings. Scrappers have made off with anything of value, there is extensive water damage in many of the buildings and black mold abounds. It also looks like some of the buildings have been used for a paintball tournament. According to potential plans for the property include the development of 300 homes and re-opening the ski chalet and golf course.

As we were near the skating rink you can hear the trucks behind us by the ski lifts, hence we didnt venture up there since they were working.

ABANDONED New York Resort with ties to the MOB & Jerry Lewis

At 5:05 PM on April 14, 2012, a guard on patrol smelled something burning near an oil boiler but he was unable to locate any smoke. A tenant reported smelling something burning 15 minutes later, and observed smoke rising from the main building, but the tenant deemed it not serious enough to notify the fire department. After reports of more smoke, the guard unlocked the boiler room around 6:00 PM and discovered the fire raging out of control. Thus, the demise. 7 out of the 10 buildings burned. 3 remain.

The resort became known for its wealthy patrons, with the Resort’s family focusing on fine dining and live entertainment to entice tourists. The hotel’s Brown Derby nightclub attracted comedians such as Bob Hope, Buddy Hackett, Jackie Mason, Woody Allen, and George Burns, and musicians such as Sammy Davis, Jr., Tony Bennett, Harry Belafonte and Liberace.

Jerry Lewis began his comedic career here, beginning as a waiter and working up to nightly performances in what became the Jerry Lewis Theater.

Brown’s also attracted Italian and Jewish gangsters and during a period of the 1940s, the bodies of their numerous victims would often turn up in Loch Sheldrake less than two miles away from the hotel.

The resort became one of thee largest in the Catskills with 570 rooms and rivaled Grossinger’s and The Concord.

Abandoned Catskills Homowack Lodge

The former Homowack Lodge is in the Catskill Mountains, New York.

The defunct Homowack Lodge was one of the many Borscht Belt summer resorts in the Catskills that are now abandoned. The resort resides near the Homowack Creek, where it derives its name. The history of the Homowack Lodge is scarce, when it opened was probably in the 1920’s or after and its decline ran through the 1970’s through possibly the 1980’s, like with the Grossinger’s Resort and the Hotel Adler.

The Homowack Lodge in its prime offered many things to do such as physical activities like tennis, bowling and swimming. It also offered relaxing things like a theater stage to watch performers, a cocktail lounge and regular lounge.

The eventual decline and extreme decay of the Homowack Lodge increased over the years. An incident that occurred in 2009 of the lodge being used as a girls camp with a new name Machne Bnos Square, cause much controversy.

The town of Mamakating had cited numerous violations and tried to have the camp shut down, it was not until the New York State Department of Health intervened that the camp was closed. The campers and staff were endangered by the toxic mold, exposed wiring and insulation, and there were fire safety violations.

Another Abandoned Borscht Belt Resort with Hidden Bowling Alley & MORE

First things first. REST IN PEACE to Darker Image TV’s brother Manuel Araujo. He passed away the day we explored this resort.
(3/8/68 - 12/12/2020)

I’m so in love with the area of New York known as the Catskills. The area itself is teeming with outdoor activities such as mountain hiking, state parks and breathtaking views. It’s also... an urbexers dream. Sadly, the area known as the Borscht Belt has declined in its visitation to it’s once thriving resort community. These sometimes lavish, one stop, all activity, entertainment & dining getaway destinations were once the vacation spots for families to escape to and have fun.

Today, most if not all resorts have simply faded and become left to rot as it’s fate lay in wait, thus becoming.. abandoned. Some have been demolished as well. This resort is one left to rot and just another decaying building storing loads of memories, rotting on a barely used road.

This is one of the many Borscht Belt resorts that were popular from the 1920’s to 1960’s, but declined in the 70’s and 80’s when the popularity of resorts were replaced by cheap airfare to other places, seaside trips, and private vacation homes. This resort lodge was a family resort before being turned into a day camp for Hasidic girls. The city forced it to close in 2009 for safety and health violations, such as toxic mold and faulty wiring.

ABANDONED Creepy Hospital Alone At Night ~ You Won’t Believe What I Found!!!

It’s peculiar how sometimes the very systems that are built to help us are the ones that need help the most.

Sadly, help wasn’t enough for this hospital before it was forced to close its doors for the last time in 2001.
This one-story brick facility was built in the late 1960’s as the only hospital for this entire rural county of 9,000 people. With the other(?) closest other(?) hospital being 90 mins away, this was the beginning of a new dawn for a poverty-stricken county and brought hope to a community that desperately needed it. However, the new hope would soon vanish
After being open for only 6 years it was forced to close for the first time in the early 1970’s due to a corruption scandal in the county that cut funds for the hospital. It wasn’t until the mid 80’s when the hospital was revived by a non profit organization. This new organization was designed to assist the hospital with its staggering 1 million dollar debt and to keep the hospital distant from continual widespread corruption in the local government. However, the hospital wasn’t out of the woods yet. Local farmers and factory workers still couldn’t afford the rising costs of healthcare to keep the hospital out of crippling debt. Additionally, more corruption was soon to occur.

In the late 90’s, a large sum of money was missing from the reserve account set aside by the county commission. Although no one was ever charged with stealing the money, there were several people to resign when confronted, including the CEO of the non profit. The money was never accounted for. With the now 1.2 million dollar debt looming overhead, it all became too much when in 2001, there were major cuts to Medicaid and forced the hospital to file bankruptcy and close its doors for the last time.
This began a unstoppable domino effect that left this entire county in devastated
Now with the closest hospital being 90 minutes away, health insurance for many of the town’s industries skyrocketed, causing many of them to move out of the area. As a result, the local economy quickly disintegrated and left thousands without work. Sadly, the ripple of damage didn’t stop there. The death rate of county has almost tripled since the hospital’s closing and the heart attack rate has risen by 40 percent.
It’s a sad story of how corruption robbed the county of any hope of thriving. Not only did it seal the fate for a hospital the community desperately needed, but it destroyed so many lives and stifled the industrial future of the county. There are still talks of the town one day reviving the hospital but it at this point, it seems more of a far-fetched idea than a reality.

ABANDONED HOTEL IN THE CATSKILLS!

The first hotel built on the mountain was designed and built by 1833 as interest in tourism in the area increased. The structure was built with the intention to expand it, but was unable to compete effectively with the Catskill Mountain House.[5] The Overlook Mountain House, owned by Robert Livingston Pell and designed by Lewis B. Wagonen, opened in 1871. At 2,920 feet (890 m), it was at a higher elevation than the nearby Catskill Mountain House or other hotels in the area.[3] The hotel had capacity for 300 guests, and was destroyed by fire in 1875. The hotel was rebuilt by the Kiersted Brothers in 1875, and faced increasing competition from the Grand Hotel, Hotel Kaaterskill, and Laurel House. In 1921 was the site of a secret organizational meeting of what was to become the Communist Labor Party of America. The hotel again burned down in 1923, and architect Frank P. Amato was hired by owner Morris Newgold to redesign and rebuild it. This design was never completely built, as the hotel's elevation and lack of rail transportation made it difficult for customers to reach the site, compounding owner Newgold's financial difficulties. The State of New York acquired much of the land, and the hotel was boarded up in 1940. Further fire damage in the mid-1960s brought down a roof-top tower which had remained standing until that point. The ruins of the hotel are accessible from the main trail.

History:
Sadly these buildings no longer exist. As of 2018, all the abandoned buildings at Grossinger's Resort have been torn down. :(

Asher Selig Grossinger moved from New York City to Ferndale in Sullivan County in the Catskill Mountains in the 1900s. There he rented rooms to visitors from New York City. His wife, Malka, operated the kosher kitchen, and Jennie Grossinger (1891–1972), his daughter, was the hostess. They called their home Longbrook House. In 1919, they sold it and purchased a bigger house on 100 acres (0.40 km2), calling it Grossinger’s Terrace Hill House.
In 1952, Grossinger's earned a place in the history of skiing as the first resort in the world to use artificial snow. Reportedly, the Grossinger family offered a million dollars to rename the local New York, Ontario, and Western Railway train station at Ferndale, NY to Grossinger's but were rebuffed by competing hoteliers.
By the time Jennie died in 1972, the hotel had grown to 35 buildings on 1,200 acres (4.9 km2) that served 150,000 guests a year. It had its own airstrip and post office. During his fighting days, Rocky Marciano would train at the resort. But in the late 1970s and 1980s, resorts like Grossinger's or the Concord could no longer attract younger guests.

Abandoned Catskills Resort: Abandoned, Roadside and Historic

Abandoned Catskills Resort: Abandoned, Roadside and Historic

This RESORT WAS CONSTRUCTED in 1933 in the Catskill region of New York complete with 400 rooms, an ice skating rink, indoor and outdoor pools, a theater, nightclub, poker rooms, and more. The entire resort covered some 96-acres.

Tourism peaked after World War II, when massive resort facilities were built in the countryside. By the 1960s, tourism in the “Borscht Belt” had entered a decline. Air travel was becoming increasingly convenient and cheap and the advent of interstate highways made long-distance automobile travel easier.

Despite these lavish offerings, the resort was forced to close in 1998 due to financial problems. Now it stands abandoned, with many of the ceilings collapsing due to immense water damage. Despite the rash of damages, most of the buildings are still standing. There have been rumors of active demolitions taking place across the site since 2011, however, this is not active year-round.

Exploring Abandoned Buildings At The Center Of a Dying Catskills Resort

This abandoned hotel hallway and attached abandoned guestrooms exist at the heart of an old resort property which was still in operation at the time of filming.

The hallway bridges two small detached buildings (which explains the odd stairs!) that were expanded upon many times until the original structures were swallowed up by the newer construction and eventually forgotten and abandoned.

History of Location:

We explored an abandoned relic that now only exists in photos and memories.

Homowack Lodge was one of many Borscht Belt resorts in the Catskills. The resort opened in the 1940’s and experienced it’s highest percentage of occupancy in the 1960’s. After it’s eventual decline in business, they closed and converted the property into a Jewish summer camp for girls. In 2009 the Health Department forced the camp to shut down immediately due to toxic mold levels throughout the buildings. Although there was interest in a revival, they never opened again.

In its bustling hayday, Homowack offered many activities such as ice skating, skiing, tennis, bowling, dancing and swimming. They also offered more relaxing activities including multiple cocktail lounges, a dining hall, a theater that featured live music and entertainment, and a golf course.

Sadly in July 2023 this vacant beauty was reduced to ash as a result of a multiple alarm fire.
