Viminacium ancient Roman City, Serbia - Viminacium starinski Rimski Grad, Srbija

Viminacium (Viminacivm) was a major city (provincial capital) and military camp of the Roman province of Moesia (today's Serbia). The site is located 12 km from the modern town of Kostolac in Eastern Serbia. The city dates back to the 1st century AD, and at its peak it is believed to have had 40,000 inhabitants, making it one of the biggest cities of that time. It lies on the Roman road Via Militaris. Viminacium was devastated by Huns in the 5th century, but was later rebuilt by Justinian. It was completely destroyed with the arrival of Slavic in the 6th century.
Today, the archaeological site occupies a total of 450 hectares, and contains remains of temples, streets, squares, amphitheatres, palaces, hippodromes and Roman baths.

Justiniana Prima - Leskovac, Serbia

Justiniana Prima - Leskovac, Serbia

►Read the blog:

David’s Been Here continues its tour of ancient sites in Serbia at Justiniana Prima, or “Empress’ Town” in the town of Leskovac. Considered a great day trip option from the city of Nis, Leskovac is just a two-hour drive south.

David gets together with the only English-speaking guide he could find (Nebojsa “Nebo”) to see the Byzantine ruins of Justiniana Prima located about 29 km west of Leskovac nestled among lush scenery. Justiniana Prima was an early Christian city founded by Emperor Justinian I. It served as the seat of the Archbishop from 535 to 615. The site contains what is left of an enormous basilica, the acropolis, lower town, and upper town. Walking around Justiniana Prima will reveal city walls, gates, churches, and large bath complex with hypocaust system (heated floors). Justiniana Prima served as the administrative and spiritual center of Illyricum, a Roman province that encompassed the central Balkan Peninsula.

David shows us portions of unearthed mosaics and the remains of the public bath complex, which was heated by an innovative method known as the hypocaust system in which the heat from an oven was used to heat the floors from underneath, sort of like ancient sub-floor heating. Justiniana Prima is a beautiful site that badly needs to be maintained. While the Serbian government sorts that out, you will need a guide to show you around the different areas so you know what you’re looking at. Lepenski Vir in Serbia | The Cradle of the European Civilization

The Lepenski Vir site in Serbia is indeed the cradle of European civilization. This is where it all started! It consists of one large settlement with around ten satellite villages, all built with a plan, unlike many other old European cultures. Numerous piscine sculptures and peculiar architectural remains have been found at the site already in 1960 - by accident. One archeologist called Lepenski Vir as the first city in Europe because it is assumed that the people of Lepenski Vir culture represent the descendants of the early European population of the Brno-Předmostí (Czech Republic) hunter-gatherer culture from the end of the last ice age. The chronology of Lepenski Vir spans between 9500/7200–6000 BC. Learn more about it by watching this video. PS: Watch in HD!

Serbien: Lepenski Vir - 9000 Jahre alte Kulturzeugnisse

Ram Fortress - Serbia

The Ram Fortress is a 15th century fort situated on a steep slope on the right bank of the Danube, in the village of Ram, municipality of Veliko Gradište, eastern Serbia. It is one of the oldest military fortifications in Serbia.
The first information about the place Ram is mentioned in 1128, and the archaeological sites nearby tell us that Celts, Romans, Serbs, Turks and Hungarians lived and created history here.
In addition to its significant historical and archaeological importance, Ram Fortress is also adorned with a magnificent view of the Danube. Close to the fortress, there are remains of the Turkish caravanserai, which are 6 centuries old.
The ticket price for individual visits is 300 dinars (2.55 EUR) , while for group visits it is 200 dinars per person. The working hours of the Ram Fortress are from 10 am to 21 pm, every day except Tuesdays.

The Serbia Scene ~ Sirmium Archeological Dig

Welcome to Mieer Travel Tips and your guide to Serbia. Come join us on this adventure as we go to Sremska Mitrovica, a small city outside of Belgrade, and visit the Sirmium Archaeologic Center.

“Sirmium is a Roman city which lies beneath the streets of modern Sremska Mitrovica…”.

The curator of the center gives us the quick study notes in Serbian but the full translation is available at their center. Here is an overview…

“…Although traces of organized life on the site of Sirmium date back to the fifth millennium B.C., the city itself is mentioned for the first time in the fourth century BC, when it was inhabited by the Illyrians and Celts.

The Roman history of Sirmium began during their invasion of the region in 35 - 33 B.C. and lasted until the end of the sixth century A.D. when it fell under the control of Avars. Because of its location on the Sava river, as well as its strategic position behind the Danube near the slopes of the Fruška Gora mountains, Sirmium developed into an administrative and economic center of the province of Pannonia Inferior (Lower Pannonia).

At the end of the third and beginning of the fourth century, the city enjoyed its greatest prosperity as one of the capitals of the Roman empire. In that period, the city was famous for its monumental public buildings, luxurious urban residences, asa well as the aqueduct that supplied Sirmium with water from the Vranjaš spring in the Fruška Gora mountains. The streets were paved and drained with below ground sewers, coins were struck in an imperial mint, while metal, glass and pottery production was also well developed”.

Enjoy your visit to Serbia and explore the ruins at the Sirmium Archeological site in Sremska Mitrovica.
