After eating some amazing alligator kebabs and frog legs ( we continued our day trip from Miami with a drive out to the Florida Keys, more specifically Key Largo. What awaited us was some more amazing fresh and local Florida seafood!
Key Largo Fisheries - Key Largo, Florida - First we stopped at Key Largo Fisheries, a wholesale seafood distributor and supplier, but they also have a nice restaurant at the pier. You can buy fresh seafood to go, or sit at the restaurant to eat. We sat at the restaurant and ordered a few dishes including an amazing mixed plates of Yellowtail snapper, Key West Pink Shrimp, and Florida lobster. All the seafood was extraordinarily fresh and delicious.
The Fish House - Key Largo, Florida - Next up on this Key Largo, Florida seafood tour, we stopped at The Fish House to eat, Fried Conch, Smoked Fish Dip, Tuna Nachos, and Stone Crab. The stone crab legs are just amazing, but I also really liked the smoked fish dip and the fried conch here. Nice laid back place, great community feel, and delicious food. For dessert, we could not leave the Florida Keys without key lime pie, and it was fantastic!
It was nice to get out of Miami and see just a little bit of the Florida Keys, and the amazing seafood they have to offer!

There are also beachfront restaurants to enjoy. Stop by Salute when you’re relaxing at Higgs Beach and don’t miss Southern Most Beach Cafe either. You can’t forget desserts on a trip to Key West, especially the one that bears its name: Key Lime Pie. Kermit’s specializes in it and serves it in plenty of unique ways. Banana Cafe also offers a delicious variation with raspberry sauce.
Cuban culture has shaped the area in many ways. Go to Cuban Coffee Queen for a drink and follow it up with authentic food at El Siboney. The history of Key West is on display in many of its restaurants. See where Pan Am Airlines began at First Flight or eat at Two Friends Patio, a long-standing hangout of Mel Fisher.
Some of the best restaurants in Key West are a bit exclusive and require reservations far in advance. Blue Heaven is one of the most crowded. Others are incredibly casual, small, and easy to miss such as Azur and Pepe’s Cafe. Not all of the best restaurants in Key West are even technically restaurants. Garbo’s Grill is a food truck that sits at Hanks Hair of the Dog Saloon. The Eaton Street Market does have an inside dining area, but don’t ignore the crates of fresh fish outside.

Azucar Ice Cream Company - After the giant Cuban sandwich and Cuban burger, we headed to Azucar Ice Cream Company, serving Cuban inspired ice cream with a variety of unique and delicious flavors. Great place, great staff, and fun place to eat ice cream.
Budare Bistro - Venezuelan Restaurant - Next, David took me to eat at one of his favorite Venezuelan restaurants in Miami, and it was extraordinary. We ordered the Cachapa, Tequenos, and the Arepa Budare. Food was fantastic! Prices - $5 - $10 per dish
Garcia's Seafood Grille - Finally, to wrap up this ultimate Miami food tour, we went to Garcia's Seafood Grille, which is both a restaurant and seafood market, and it was probably the highlight of this entire food tour with David. Garcia’s is a family run seafood business and they serve without a doubt some of the best and freshest local seafood in all of Miami. They have a host of different seafoods, but their real highlight are their Florida stone crab claws and their Florida spiny lobster. They were cooked perfectly, nothing covering the freshness of the natural flavor. It was my first time to try Florida stone crabs, a delicacy in Florida, and a crab worth traveling for just to eat - a pillar of the Florida culinary world. Thank you to Garcia's Seafood Grille for the amazing meal!

Hope you’re having an amazing day! During our quick trip to Miami (Jan 2020), we took a day trip to the Everglades, a huge wetlands area and one of the most amazing day trip destinations from Miami. Along with visiting the alligator farm, I enjoyed the variety of tropical fruit shakes, and especially eating alligator kebabs and frog legs! #Everglades #Florida #foodtour
Robert Is Here - Homestead, Florida - On our way to the Alligator farm, we stopped at Robert Is Here, known for their huge selection of tropical fruit - and it is amazing. We ordered smoothies of Black Sapote, Canistel - Egg fruit, and Passion, Orange, Mango. All were delicious and fantastic, no sugar or additives, just the pure fruit.
Everglades Alligator Farm - Homestead, Florida - Next, our destination was the Everglades Alligator Farm, a great place to get an introduction to the Everglades wetlands, and to see wildlife in the wild. It was awesome to ride airboat - and yes they are even more fun than in the movies.
Everglades Gator Grill - Homestead, Florida - Finally, we headed to Everglades Gator Grill to eat some alligator, including alligator kebabs and a gator basket. We also tried their massive frog legs, which were delicious.
Total price - $82.75

I met up with my friend David Hoffman, I’ve known him for years, but this is the first time to meet him in his hometown of Miami. He actually picked us up from the airport and we immediately got started eating.
Here are the places we ate in this Miami food tour:
Versailles Restaurant Cuban Cuisine - Nowhere is more legendary for food in Miami than Versailles Restaurant, specializing in Cuban food, and known for their Cuban coffee and Cuban sandwich. We first started at the coffee bar, for some Cuban coffee and pastries - loved the ham croquetas and the guava and cheese empanada. Then we had the honor to watch a classic 1 meter Cuban sandwich being made and then eating it. It was everything it needed to be, a sandwich of history.
El Rey De Las Fritas - Next we headed to El Rey De Las Fritas for the Cuban burger, an impressively French fry filled burger loaded with seasonings and sauces. David, Joel, and I, all shared the Frita Suprema, Frita Original, and the Frita a Caballo. Oh man it was good, dripping with greasy flavor. El Rey De Las Fritas is truly a must eat gem of Miami.

The hand crafted specialty drinks, seafood, pasta, appetizers, and desserts can't be beat. Try the lobster scampi, scallops & pork belly, carne crude, chef's piccata, tomahawk steak, tuscan sunset, Genoa greyhound, smoked godfather, gelato, Milan mule, and Rossini for some of our favorites!

Top 10 Authentic FLORIDA KEY Foods / What LOCALS Eat When in the FLORIDA KEYS / The MUST TRY Foods
Grouper
A local fish with a large mouth and stout body, the first swimmer on our list goes to the grouper!
This fish can be gigantic, with the largest weighing in at 880 lbs. Their diet consists of other fish, octopi, and crustaceans, which it eats whole. This fish is a beast.
The fishing season for most species of grouper runs from June through December. Still, you can catch different species of grouper throughout the year.
Many say that grouper has a taste similar to a combination of bass and halibut, but all 400+ different species taste slightly different.
Smoked Fish Dip
The Florida Key's smoked fish dip is a holistic experience; It's usually a mixture of a bunch of different local fish. Smoked mullet, mahi-mahi, Spanish mackerel, and kingfish are examples of commonly incorporated fish. Other ingredients generally include mayo, celery, scallions, peppers, pickles, and lemon juice, but there are many different variations.
As a no-waste plate, it utilizes the leftover pieces of fish meat instead of throwing them away. This dip is a traditional Florida experience and said by many to be the quintessential taste of old Florida.
Spiny Lobster
Casually called bugs by locals, the spiny lobster takes the number seven spot. This crustacean is pretty abundant in the Gulf of Mexico, with large populations around the Keys.
If we compare the spiny lobster to its New England relative, we will notice many differences. The spiny lobster looks different; these guys don't have the iconic Maine lobster claws. They have two long spiny antennae and are just overall a little scarier looking.
Yellowtail Snapper
Found swimming around the coral reefs of the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea, the next food on our list goes to the yellowtail snapper!
The yellowtail snapper is a game fish that's popular amongst recreational and sport fishers but has also successfully been farmed. The peak season for this swimmer lies between the warmer months of the year but can be caught and eaten fresh year-round.
Florida Stone Crab
Locally nicknamed stonies, this crustacean can be found in coastal waters from Connecticut to the shores of Belize and has a special home in the Gulf of Mexico.
Generally scavengers, this particular crab has a taste for oysters and is often found where oysters grow. The harvest season for stone crabs in Florida is between October and May. Said to be sweeter and flakier than blue crab meat, their flavor is often compared to a combination of shrimp and lobster.
Key West Pinks
Not all shrimp are created equally. According to many, the Key West Pink is bigger, sweeter, juicier, and PINKER than most!
One might think of a translucent piece of seafood with a brown and blueish hue when thinking of most raw shrimp. Key West Pinks are unique. When they come out of the water, they already have a pink coloring to them and only intensifies when cooked. The shrimp acquire this pigment from the local, coral-based sand they search through to find their food.
Rum
Rum is a popular liquor for tropical and tiki inspired drinks for a good reason. A spirit made by fermenting and distilling sugarcane juice and molasses is similar to tequila in the fact that there are different grades such as light rum, golden rum and dark rum. Rum can also be flavored. A common and popular flavored rum is Captain Morgan Spiced Rum thats infused with a bunch of different things from your spice cabinet. When you think of the flavor of non-flavored rums, think different degrees of toasted sugar. Some common rum cocktails that one might encounter are pina coladas, mai tais and rum runners.
Hogfish
This species of wrasse primarily lives along the coasts and reefs of the western Atlantic Ocean, mainly in reef-like areas with plenty of soft coral and crustaceans, its primary food sources. This fish is thin but boasts a pig-like snout that it uses to search through the ocean's sediment to find shellfish to eat. This method of scavenging is how it got it's name, the hogfish.
Conch
Indigenous to the Gulf of Mexico, the Queen Conch is the subspecies of this sea snail we think of when we think Florida Key fare. This mollusk lives in the warm shallow waters, seagrass beds, and reefs along the coast of Key West. Mouthfeel-wise, conchs have a texture similar to clams but tougher and slightly sweeter. Nonetheless, they are used interchangeably in many recipes. Here, conch fritters are this sea creature's claim to fame.
Key Lime Pie
The number one spot goes to key lime pie! Named after the fruit that gives it its flavor, the filling is a mixture of key lime juice, sweetened condensed milk, and egg yolk. It is creamy, refreshing, and traditionally served in a graham cracker crust. The usual three toppings include merengue, whipped cream, or no topping at all.

This was not my first time in Key West so I brought my best friend along with me. We took a road trip from Sarasota to Key West since the ferry was not in service because of Hurricane Ian.
The Florida Keys are so fun, it's like it's own little paradise. You wouldn't even know you're in Florida... except for certain reminders. We definitely ate some good food in the Florida Keys... 10/10 recommend.
