The World's Northernmost Airport! Longyearbyen Svalbard (LYR) - Beware the Polar Bears!
Yes, this is the last airport before the North Pole. There are more northerly airbases (Resolute in Canada for example) but for commercial passengers this is the limit. No visa is required to visit as per the terms of the Svalbard Treaty. However, flights do not come cheap and there are no international flights - just domestic from Oslo and Tromsø. This film looks briefly at the origins of the airport and the tragic aviation disaster that contributed to the abandonment of the Russian mining town of Pyramiden.

It is located 1.6 nautical miles (3 km) northwest of Longyearbyen, and it is the northernmost airport in the world with public scheduled flights. The first airport near Longyearbyen was constructed during World War II. In 1959, it was first taken into use for occasional flights, but could only be used a few months a year.

The airport has no taxiways, so taxiing on the runway and takeoff heading 010 - following an eastern course along Adventfjord, then turning right and continuing south towards Norway until the Van Mijen Fjord.
Great views of the Hiorth Mountains, and - after the right turn - of Advent Valley (including a zoom to Coal Mines No. 6 and 7, the EISCAT Svalbard radar, and Bolterdalen) and of central and eastern Spitsbergen.
