Flying to St Helena Airport

This trip to the St. Helena Airport took place on 15 February 2020, before the major current travel restrictions. Here's a video with my thoughts on that situation:

This video is about flying to the St. Helena Airport. St. Helena Airport is one of the most challenging airports in the world. Less than ten commercial airline pilots are certified to land here!

At either end of the runway are massive cliffs, which create challenging wind conditions.

I’ve wanted to visit St. Helena for a long time. When the St. Helena Airport received its first commercial flight in 2017, the trip became far more viable for me. Before St. Helena Airport opened, a trip there required a five day boat trip just to get there.

St. Helena’s role in the Age of Exploration cannot be understated. The Portuguese used St. Helena as a secret base for restocking their ships (they left a heard of goats and planted citrus trees. It then became a key possession of the British East India Company before it was suddenly converted into a prison for the world’s most feared man – Napoleon. He died there, too. Today, it’s a fascinating British Overseas Territory accessed thanks to the St. Helena Airport.

In this video, we’ll explore the flight’s route, the passenger experience, and even peak behind the scenes at the St. Helena Airport to understand how it all works.

Here’s a link to the unedited take-off and landing footage:

Flying from St Helena to Cape Town

This trip to the St. Helena Airport took place 15 February 2020, before the major current travel restrictions. This is not a time to travel, but instead...please Stay Home! Stick around to the end of the video for some of my thoughts about the state of travel today.

In this video, I'll share a bit from behind the scenes at the St. Helena airport as well as some scenes from the flight back to Cape Town with Airlink. But the real star of the show on the flight from St Helena to Cape Town was the approach at sunset past Table Mountain. It was truly jaw-dropping.

Watching this approach into Cape Town from St. Helena – undoubtedly the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen from the air – was an opportunity to pause and reflect.

I have always taken great comfort – even assigned some of my own identity to the fact that, thanks to commercial aviation, I can get anywhere, anytime, in unbelievable comfort. Producing these videos about St. Helena has been a cathartic process for me. A reminder of what was possible not too long ago.

Of course, travel like this is not possible now. We’re each doing our part, staying home, washing our hands, maintaining social distance. These things are hard, we all know that. We miss being in the sky. We miss what aviation provides – that’s connection. And, stunning views like this. Views, I’m sorry to say, I didn’t fully appreciate before this crisis occurred.

Aviation brings the world together. A place like St. Helena – previously weeks away – becomes only a matter of hours from anywhere else on the planet. But, now we’re more apart than we’ve ever been.

We’re separated from our family, our friends, and the rest of the world. I hope we use this time to celebrate the small moments and to feel gratitude for what we can enjoy.

I feel for everyone who works in travel or people who travel for work. Your world has been rocked. These are strange times. But we know this: We know travel will return. Yes! It will be different, but it will return. Will travel be what it once was? Will the glamor be gone? I don’t know.

But I am sure of this: It will come back. Humans are explorers. We yearn to see the world, to seek new experiences, to make strangers our friends, to see new places. Commercial aviation will make this possible again.

I look forward to getting back in the air, to connecting with the world, as soon as it’s possible to do so. In the meantime, I’ll continue posting on this channel with the goal of bringing a little joy to you, along with a reminder of what was, and maybe a prediction or two about what will be.

Will One Of The World's Most Remote Islands Get A Direct London Flight?

After reporting on Titan Airways medical relief flight from London to St. Helena last Sunday, it brought up the question of whether a regular service between the United Kingdom and the isolated island would make sense. The arrival of Titan Airways Airbus A318-100 marked the first time an Airbus aircraft has landed on St. Helena and now has the locals all talking about a possible air link to Europe.

What To Do in St Helena

This trip to the St. Helena took place from 15 - 18 February 2020, before the major current travel restrictions. I do not encourage anyone to travel now. #StayHome. Here's a video with my thoughts on the current situation:

St. Helena may just be one of my favorite places I’ve ever visited. The Saints are some of the kindest people I’ve ever come across in my travels. Because I had such a great time, I thought I’d try something different for this video about St. Helena.

I normally make videos here on YouTube about airlines, but perhaps the most amazing part of aviation are the places it can take. Places like St Helena. So, in this video about St Helena, I’m trying a little experiment: Let’s check out some things on the ground in St Helena! We’ll explore some of the highlights of St. Helena and some of what I enjoyed while I was here. Let me know what you think about this experiment by leaving comments. I always appreciate feedback! And next week, I’ll post a more typical video about my return to the mainland.

St. Helena is home to epic history, out-of-this-world scenery, and incredible opportunities for intreprid travelers.

We’ll explore the infamous Jacobs Ladder, Napoleon’s two residences on St. Helena, some of the hiking available on the island, as well as some of the most amazing vistas.

This is my first attempt at a video about something unrelated to aviation, so I’d appreciate your feedback. I think it’s probably fair to say I need to expand my coverage of things like accomodations and food if I continue with this. Also, maybe I’ll do this on a separate channel. Anyway, let me know what you think of this first attempt. And, also, let me know if you’re heading to St. Helena once we can all travel again!

The City of Jamestown St Helena - to Live, Work & Explore

Jamestown is the capital of St Helena Island, a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic Ocean.

The island is tiny and very remote, it’s most notable claim to fame is that French Emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte was exiled here in 1815, where he died 6 years later.
Until recently St Helena was only accessible by ship, however, St Helena Airport began scheduled flights in 2017 and now weekly flights to Johannesburg, South Africa, keep the island connected with the outside world.

For anyone considering living or taking up a job opportunity on St Helena, this short film gives some insight to what you can expect to find in the island's capital, Jamestown.
Sampling the prestigious St Helena coffee, night swimming at the Jamestown pool, noisy street parades to celebrate the national day and spotting the colourful fish in the Castle Gardens fountain, are some of the activities to experience.
This video about Jamestown also includes shopping for groceries along Main Street, catching a taxi, climbing Jacob's Ladder and target shooting at the Jamestown Rifle Club, plus lots more!
We also include an overview of Jamestown’s history and how it came to be a city.
Filmed & produced in early 2023

St Helena Island - Flying to one of world's most remote airports

We're both Saints (what people from St Helena Island are called) this video is about us traveling back to the island. Returning home for a visit, taking our little one to meet her grandmother for the first time.

See the full journey from leaving the UK, via South Africa, landing at the airport pass massive cliffs on one side, and the big blue South Atlantic Ocean on the other side. It's spectacular! Then driving from the airport, through Longwood, and down into Jamestown (capital of St Helena), across the seafront and through the town.

St Helena airport is one of the most challenging and remote airports in the world. Opened in 2017, it's an international airport for the British Overseas Territory. St Helena island is tiny and remote, home to only about 4,500 people, it is most famed for the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, who was exiled there in 1815, and died there 6 years later. The island now keeps the island connected to the rest of the world.

Jerusalema St Helena Airport

The Jerusalema Dance Challenge, taking place on the apron at the St Helena Airport at the end of a special Super Hero Family Fun Run day, which was organised by local charity, SHAPE.
This event took place on Saturday 14 October, 2020. On this day, as most places around the world continue to struggle with the effects of the global pandemic, St Helena is blessed by continuing to remain Covid-free, allowing these community events to be enjoyed by all.

St Helena - A Breath of Fresh Air

St Helena is so special to the people that live here, both locals and those who have travelled the distance to now call St Helena their home.

Why? Well, we’re one of the remotest islands on Earth – a place of uninterrupted nature. Of safety. A subtropical paradise in the midst of the South Atlantic Ocean.

Our population is just over 4,000. Before we got an airport in 2017, the only way to get here was a five-day ship voyage from South Africa. St Helena is truly unlike anywhere else on Earth.

But that’s enough from us – we’d rather let the community share its own story.

In this video, five of our local residents invite you to experience St Helena through their eyes.

If you’re not familiar with us yet, we hope their experiences inspire you to visit so you can fall in love with our island too. And if you’re already friends or family, here’s to celebrating our unique island!
